@Hskrjer99@mehvid1 I have a few similar things. They do work as fans, which is to say, the model I have boasts decent blowing strength (arm’s length). In oppressive dry heat, this is like having a hair dryer in your face. In oppressive humid heat, it’s… something.
For any Bus Rider, these will be a Life safer in the heat! This thing is packing a 12/24 package…I’ve been waiting a long time for this “Spot” cooler to be around! I’m in!
@omally This is the kind of thing you get from some guy trying to get your signature. Or from some local Mayor / Business / Bank / “etc”
This should be illegal to make. No one needs it . No ones really gonna use it, and If you had just focused on any one of the 3 things, you might have had an actually useful thing.
No BT speaker, it doesn’t double as a pool floaty or a mini-pet-vacuum - so only three totally unrelated function that have absolutely no reason to be part of one product. It’s probably not dishwasher safe (although it might be, it doesn’t say) but doesn’t come screwed to an insulated cup anyway. And you wonder why it’s on Meh…
@DrunkCat I’ve kept up diligently with nearly all AI developments, research, and papers in the last year. Things are shifting at a fundamental level, but the crest was only just barely gotten over in the last 6 months so even many of those into AI will have missed it. It will take time for a lot of these new developments to work out, but to say the least I went from impressed to yawning to unimpressed to horrified and amazed.
Our lives will change, just not tomorrow. AI is likely going to take a decade or two to be fully and truly developed (as well as for all the hardware to be built out) into something potent and meaningful. But the fundamental breakthroughs continued when we thought they’d stop (subquadratics replacing transformer-based models, synthetic data training, new schemes for giving models memory, working through all the kinks of 2nd gen ‘agentic AI,’ etc).
The last few years have been simple relatively simple tech that just happened to have the luxury of pairing nicely with powerful parallel computing. The next few years will be the working out of some weird paradigms for storing data, training models, verifying outputs, fully simulating world models (where I think the real breakthroughs will start) and automating most of the AI research pipeline.
@DrunkCat@midnightplatinu the only thing that will happen going forward is the frivolous uses of AI will slooowly die off (depending on the economy, intelligence of investors, and how well Scam Altman spins the lie, which if Elon is any indication doesn’t have to be very well for the nepo babies to dump their savings onto them) as the fever dream of being able to fire every employee wears off and investors stop subsidizing the computing costs of all the AI, realize it’s not worth the price of an employee but more like $5 a month, which will bankrupt most of these companies. A few will find a niche and survive, most by saving money through enshitifying some previously human done thing. And hopefully (honestly) some models find a way to specialize for their task and operate on lower power and actually be sort of useful.
This is not even to speak at all to the morally disgusting aspect of not compensating anyone for model training data. I assume the morally bankrupt US politics will do absolutely zero on that front, nor will the average slop-suckers, as evidenced by everyone who hates @DrunkCat’s posts…
Companies like openAI will zombie along, making new grand promises and ever dreaming of someday doing something even a vague hint of the original hype, buoyed by investors too ashamed/dumb to admit they got duped… Like the investors who put billions into uber expecting it would replace drivers… in, you know, 2018… lol. Or the geniuses still waiting for their tesla roadsters…
I’ve been a proponent of AI for decades, long before it was popular and in the long term I’m actually very sure a real AI technology will achieve AGI. But this was never going to be it. And the way these scammers operate has only derailed and delayed progress.
Every good tech idea today is being greedily ripped off the vine the second the first few cells of fruit appear and trying to be sold as fully ripe and delicious.
@DrunkCat Yes, AI that can scrape the entire internet for whatever you need and generate a plethora of information and content is less useful than a fan gizmo that ended up on Meh because no one actually wanted it.
Let’s see if ChatGPT is for sale on Meh, and maybe we’ll talk.
I don’t even know why you’re even allowed to spam post like this, Meh does have the ability to hide comments. You’re always offtopic, a perfectly reasonable target for a shadowban. If you are part of the Meh staff just say so because I’m tired of the running gag.
@AaronLeeJohnson Yup, unbridled plagiarism, copyright infringement and piracy being fed into an autocomplete that requires a hard line to a coal plant while chugging a lakes worth of water. Truly much more sustainable than a small power bank with a light and fan. And here I thought it was just pure desperation for a usecase that’s keeping “AI” alive.
Make me a high power version of these and I’m in. It would have been useful this past weekend when my electricity was out from 5 pm Thursday to 4 pm Sunday and it was 90+ degrees out.
@cinoclav
Oh no… Ugh, THAT sounds like it must’ve stunk! Possibly literally! But seriously, I’m not sure if this fan would’ve done very much and we both know it wouldn’t have lasted thru the outage!
We got a very similar version of this that was decorated like a bear to use in the hospital when my wife delivered. (Decoration was incidental to fan) Worked great and now we use it in the kitchen to speed things like drying berries after washing or anything on a cooling rack
This might be the most Meh type item in recent history. A fan, a flashlight, and powerbank all in one! Months of individual products leading up to this event. Like the Mehvengers!
That’s pretty cute but I’m not sure if you could even say that it BLOWS…
Lol
I guess there’s a time and place for everything and I shouldn’t knock the little guy!
You’ll want double-fisted blowing action and/or more phone juice. Especially when the crowds arrive. Also buy cold water; bringing your own warm water isn’t as good.
Thinking about purchasing … the thing that interests me is the brand which I like. Does too many things? I have a Halo charger that jumpstarts cars, charges phones (wireless or corded), has a flashlight, and inflates tires.
Had they incorporated a personal stimulator, this device would be in every pocket and purse throughout the world.
Since it didn’t and I came up with the idea, I hereby state copyrights and pending patent rights.
For people who had a power outage and wanted a fan… buy a basic ass folding/accordion hand fan. Never runs out of power and they make so much more cooling air movement for a tiny bit of effort. As a bonus you can pretend you’re from Mississippi and mutter things like “oh my lord this heat” and “it’s hotter than a junebug in spring” to anyone unfortunate enough to be nearby.
And you think that gives you bragging rights? I live in Columbus Ohio and it is also 500° F here also. Thankfully we just had a little rain and now it’s only 400° F. Either way, something’s just not right with this picture. What we need is something more than one of these little fans to keep us cool. We need to pray that our electricity dors not go off thereby shutting down air conditioners. Lol.

Meh indeed.
It’s three million degrees outside, and you think a little USB fan is supposed to make me happy?
@adastra Yes. Oops, no. It’s not available in Georgia Red.
This blows.
@Hskrjer99 and it probably doesn’t even do that very well.
@Hskrjer99 @mehvid1 I have a few similar things. They do work as fans, which is to say, the model I have boasts decent blowing strength (arm’s length). In oppressive dry heat, this is like having a hair dryer in your face. In oppressive humid heat, it’s… something.

The light portion is actually helpful. The blades stop with a little pressure (say hitting your fingers; it stings, but it’s not going to cut tissue). The battery part is a joke (it’ll power the fan all day, but not if a phone asks for a lot of juice at once).
For outdoor relief, it’s going to be wet towels, a blackout umbrella, and just not being outside. Portable swamp coolers are a thing, but like fans, they don’t really take much sting out of an afternoon sun.

Does one guy in the whole world make all the world’s powerbanks? And he plays golf with Snapster or something?
For any Bus Rider, these will be a Life safer in the heat! This thing is packing a 12/24 package…I’ve been waiting a long time for this “Spot” cooler to be around! I’m in!
@Tarnaa it looks like my order page maxed out at 10/20.
it should be illegal to make stuff like this
@omally This is the kind of thing you get from some guy trying to get your signature. Or from some local Mayor / Business / Bank / “etc”

@deenK @omally
I would have said that it’s the kind of thing you’d get from a gumball machine! Or a box of Cracker Jacks! Lol
@deenK @omally Cue this classic from The Onion…
Chinese Factory Worker Can’t Believe The Shit He Makes For Americans
@deenK @omally i bought it…in pink… for the grand daughters who live in insufferable humidity in Alabama.
@deenK @omally @samnsara it’s not a great thing, but it is something in the wet heat (see my post above for my opinions on fighting outdoor heat)

So this does not just Halo 1 thing, or Halo 2 things, but Halo 3 things at a time. If it tried to do any more it would be a Halo Reach too far.
@pmarin was going to edit this in but was a bit late:
EDIT I had a hard time working this in, but the combination of these 3 things must make it one of the ODDEST combo devices (Halo ODST).
In 5 years this will be more useful than “AI”.
@DrunkCat In three weeks it will stop working. I bought one of these for when I worked at a warehouse, and it died in a month.
@DrunkCat And yet it is already more useful than your attempts to win them back.
@DrunkCat I’ve kept up diligently with nearly all AI developments, research, and papers in the last year. @DrunkCat @midnightplatinu AI will be the end of civilization
@yakkoTDI k
@AaronLeeJohnson I rest my case.
@midnightplatinu Okay Elon.

@cinoclav If you are ever in that scenario again. I would recommend getting into your tub and just having yourself a very cold bath.
We got a very similar version of this that was decorated like a bear to use in the hospital when my wife delivered. (Decoration was incidental to fan) Worked great and now we use it in the kitchen to speed things like drying berries after washing or anything on a cooling rack

As someone who just experienced a 76 hour power outage, I could have used these. /buy
@braintuba let’s try this again.
/buy --color grey
That’s pretty cute but I’m not sure if you could even say that it BLOWS…

Lol
I guess there’s a time and place for everything and I shouldn’t knock the little guy!
@Lynnerizer, my pecker is longer than this lil guy & that’s not sayin much,…i had to pee once,…well, i pulled out a hair & peed all down my leg!!
@1DisabledWarVet
Ummm… Okay…

At the risk of sounding redundant, I’m just going to say (AGAIN) that there’s a time and place for everything…
After 102 degrees yesterday, I’m in.
/buy --color grey
@ItalianScallion It worked! Your order number is: alternative-mucky-art
/showme alternative mucky art

Good luck…
Lol

You really do have high hopes, huh.
How useful would these be at Disney?
@jchasma bring extra

@bobthenormal-i wouldn’t have to pretend i’m from Mississippi,… i Am from Miss & I LOVE IT!!
[LOL] BTW, its only 500° F here today!! 🫣
@bobthenormal A couple of rechargeable camping fans were our saving grace.
@1DisabledWarVet @bobthenormal

They could have added a Swiss army knife to it.
Tempting, but without a spork, a barometer and some Chaucer poetry it’s just not tempting enough.
