@DrunkCat Everybody says that, but I call cap. Having been on art websites since as far back as the 90s, no one is patting you on the back for making stick figures and in fact, if you set up your own AI and generate good enough images people will like that more than the person who uploaded their Sonic MLP hybrid OC that they doodled in math class.
But hey. I’ll use my time machine and go back to the mid 2000s and tell the children making Sonic OC sprite recolors that it’s better than AI. Maybe it will offset the fact that, negative or positive, AI images generate more attention than the works of a nascent artist.
@AaronLeeJohnson No one is patting you on the back for making magnus opus’s either. There’s even memes about it e.g. “my low effort post out did my high effort post”.
If AI images generated more attention then they wouldn’t be so desperate to still find a use case after all these years. Some dude got more attention commissioning Daisy elephants.
I don’t usually respond to vapid arguments based on the vapors but the idea that people can’t just pick up a pencil is insulting to the species.
@AaronLeeJohnson@DrunkCat
Find a use? lol, you haven’t noticed them being used by companies everywhere? At this point, you probably only notice the bad ones, which is probably why you have such a negative opinion.
@shirlema No scent, but the company at one time made scent “rings” to rest around the flame. So yep, just a flame with a remote control, timer and safety features.
@einrad I can see these as a safer alternative to yard party tiki torches. As someone who enjoys a bit of firelit outdoor time, these do appeal… and, unlike my Boomer neighbor, seem unlikely to set fire to my yard.
If these were scented, I’d probably throw in. Even so, I’m tempted.
It’s interesting that the cnet review cited the simplicity of the remote and absence of app control as a positive. I could see these being huge for people who decorate for spooky season if they could be programmed and tied into other automation.
@OnionSoup I read the cnet review, and now I want the first edition. You could set them up to trigger when your phone was in a certain distance. Imagine walking to your acolytes as flames leap up to light your way!
Liquid paraffin lamp oil is rather cheap and IF the cartridges can be refilled waala! That would make an even better deal!
The wick can probably be pulled out some too I would guess Lite it UP
@dahobbs9 Came here to ask about this. If there were a way to refill the cartridges with your own fuel, that would negate the loss of functionality once the ‘disposable’ cartridges run out.
@dahobbs9@PooltoyWolf Am definitely going to give this a try. With 10 refill cartridges per bundle, I will have plenty of spares for some trial and error.
@dahobbs9 I was thinking about refilling. Just from looking at the pretty pictures I guessed tiki torch/hurricane lamp fuel and a luer-lok syringe with a large bore needle. Drill a small-ish hole in the top between the wick and the rolled seal for needle access. Easy-Peazy.
@dahobbs9 Additional thoughts. Drilling a hole will likely create a spill hazard if it gets knocked over. I know the tilt safety should extinguish the flame but it could still leak absent devising some sort of plug. Also, filling with your own fuel gives you the opportunity to add a scent you find pleasing. Or offensive, hey you do you.
In business, if you have no competition you either have an absolutely world-shattering idea and you’re ahead of the market or it’s so dumb no one else thinks it’s worth creating. Given that this is on Meh…
@ergomeh I think a combination of being ahead of the market, but also being unrealistic on price. $99 per candle (with 2 refills) is pretty insane. This entire set we’re selling weighs over 15lb so it’s not cheap stuff and not cheap to ship either.
We can’t even make money on it at this price… so maybe you’re onto something with your second point there
@ergomeh I was a bit surprised these weren’t a Kickstarter project. They spent a good chunk of change at the outset getting reviews on several well-known sites (CNet, Forbes, and Popular Mechanics were a few on a quick search)
The ultimate goal for this probably was to get a bunch of people onboard were recurring subscriptions, but they missed the mark by making the initial cost so high. They really could have taken a lesson from the Gillette and HP business models of virtually giving away the advertised product to build a steady stream of income from refills. – Much as Meh is doing by making the set of refills cost more per unit than the main deal.
I probably went too far down the rabbit hole in seeing that Gen1 actually had more bells and whistles. Different color shells, scents, a phone app, etc. but the refills only lasted half as long. No complaints about ditching the unnecessary IOT, but these look a bit too plain, and the realistic appearance is instantly nullified if seen from above.
Curious as well about the possibility of refilling. And would the fuel be kerosene or mineral oil? Perhaps a small hole added near the top of the refill, fuel added by syringe, and then hole covered with tape?

What a hot deal!!
A real flame, even if it’s poorly drawn stick figures, is galaxies above some douche canoe trying to make an “AI” flame.
@DrunkCat Is that the phone I hear ringing? Hurry up and answer!! It might be them calling you back because they miss their cuddly douche canoe.

@AaronLeeJohnson @DrunkCat
I disagree. You must have missed the website for Stick Figure Death Theater.
Also!!
@AaronLeeJohnson No one is patting you on the back for making magnus opus’s either. There’s even memes about it e.g. “my low effort post out did my high effort post”.

Do these have a smell or scent or whatever? Or is the entire gimmick it’s a flame with a remote control?
@shirlema No scent, but the company at one time made scent “rings” to rest around the flame. So yep, just a flame with a remote control, timer and safety features.
@shirlema @troy Safety features?!?!
I’m out.
Remote control arson? I really don’t think these are a good idea.
@netbucks They are a great idea.
@netbucks too impersonal?
@netbucks Wonder what the range of the remote is?
(Asking for a friend.)
@netbucks @phendrick
You do know that roasting a friend doesn’t involve real fire right? Right? RIGHT? RIGHT?!!
OMG!! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY FIRETRUCKS!!!
I like real candles. I like fake electronic candles. This? I can’t begin to see the use case…
Maybe these will be the world’s first and the world’s last remote control real candles?
@einrad I can see these as a safer alternative to yard party tiki torches. As someone who enjoys a bit of firelit outdoor time, these do appeal… and, unlike my Boomer neighbor, seem unlikely to set fire to my yard.

“refill cartridges” lolwut? Is that butane at 100x markup or something?
@phr Where the heck are you getting butane that cheap?
@phr “liquid paraffin refill” so wax in a liquid state
@phr @zippyus
/showme liquid state
Real flame candles help create the perfect mood lighting for your date with your Real doll.
@Num1Zero My Miku is gonna be so excited!
@Num1Zero Hope it’s a non-flammable doll.
@Num1Zero @ShotgunX @phendrickphendrick
An interesting take on the phrase “going down in flames”.
Going to stock up on 100 of these for my cult.
They will all worship me as a God when I make the candles burn from afar.
@OnionSoup Now that’s using the old brain cells!!
@OnionSoup I read the cnet review, and now I want the first edition. You could set them up to trigger when your phone was in a certain distance. Imagine walking to your acolytes as flames leap up to light your way!
Also probably the Darth Vader theme is playing.
Liquid paraffin lamp oil is rather cheap and IF the cartridges can be refilled waala! That would make an even better deal!
Lite it UP
The wick can probably be pulled out some too I would guess
SideDeal has 4 cartridges for $12

Peace
My grandma would like this.
@AaronLeeJohnson Make your grandma happy!
The refills are 4 for 12$. So if you feel like extras just buy the candle bundle again at 10 for 24.
@shaungreen426 this guy candles
@shaungreen426 @troy I just repeated this exact thought in a now-deleted comment. Wish the refill-only bundle was a bit more cost-effective.
@shaungreen426 Yeah, the sidedeal math ain’t mathin’
WTF is reverse burn? Does it unflame and fill the fuel tank up instead of flaming and emptying the tank out?

@ciabelle Most Excellent refill suggestion!!
I’m tempted, but I feel like this has great IRK potential.
If you want this make sure you buy a bunch since this business closed down so once you’re out of refills you won’t be able to get anymore.
