Mer-Maid Drain Magic is a universal 2-in-1 drain solution that quickly replaces old, broken, or missing sink stoppers for an easy, hassle-free upgrade
With a simple press of a button, Drain Magic lets you fill or drain your sink instantly while its silicone gasket ensures a watertight, mess-free installation
A powerful anti-clogging basket catches hair, food, and debris before they reach the drain, keeping your sink flowing smoothly and clean
Made from rust-resistant brass with a polished nickel finish, Drain Magic combines long-lasting durability with modern elegance
Designed to fit most sink drains from 1.06” to 1.96” in diameter, Drain Magic includes pre-assembled and extra gaskets for a perfect, customizable fit
I guess if I knew the dimensions of my sink this would be useful. But I don’t need this for my sink as much as I need it for the tub or is it really just a matter of it fitting into the hole regardless?
@AaronLeeJohnson Tub drains often have a non-removable bit to support the stopper, and those will block this from being installed. On a lavatory sink, you’ll probably need to remove the existing drain pop-up and reinstall the operation lever to seal the fitting on the back of the downpipe. That’s not rocket science; there’s a good chance you’ve had to learn how already.
We have cats. A similar contraption for the tub drain would clog immediately upon starting to take a shower. We use something much simpler now. (And extracting a regular pop-up to clean it and unclog the lav drain is easy, and doesn’t have to be done very often.)
@katbyter@unksol The plastic thing we’re using is that HD item. I don’t know where my partner sourced it; he doesn’t do Home Depot. (I do. Much Ryobi.)
@katbyter@werehatrack those plastic things have been working for decades. Before I was born at least. They don’t have the built in stopper obviously/ you just have a manual stopper you put over it.
@sflesch@werehatrack I just assumed it was a tub. Cats were in it cause water. To drink. But if I could round up all the cats and wash out all the hair every spring. Yes. Yes please
@unksol@werehatrack I have one of those. The hair doesn’t shake off like one would hope. You have to pick it out from the entanglement of the plastic nub teeth. Which no one else in the house seems capable of doing. They must be weakened by all the hair loss.
Cat hair will reach every point in a house that has a cat. Even into rooms where the cat does not go. (There won’t be as much there, but some will be present regardless.)
We have ten cats. The drain screen needs to be scraped free of hair just after the start and at the end of a shower, at the very least. (Any while my hair is dyed reddish-brown, what gets trapped in the strainer is cat grey.)
@sflesch@werehatrack I’m resigned. There is hair everywhere all the time. I can’t stop it.
It WAS way worse in the spring. And washing couch covers ever week and running the robot vacuum and shop vac 1. And 2. And shark. And that battery stick one. And the 5 different versions of lint tools help.
Amazon seems to have millions of variations of these for under $7 each with quality brand names like QYNDHRT. (But most without the same level of ostentatious self-branding like this Mer-Maid one.)
@stinks Yup. I tried to buy one from MEH & would’ve had to pay $6 for mehmbership, but I waited & they were sold out, so waiting made me a winner! (I’m a prime member)
@Kyser_Soze I’ve noticed my recent experience with meh (ok, who am I kidding, the last 2 years or so) has been, “A dollar saved is a dollar earned.”
But I mean the site is called meh. What was younger me thinking?
Edit: Okay I got an indoor biking fan on August 23rd 2024 that’s pretty good. But the rest is crap until Aug 23. So the fan is the exception that proves the rule maybe.
@stinks That’s why I let my mehmbership expire: not enough stuff I’d really want to buy and the added $6 makes the price too high for crap I’m on the fence on.
@heartfeltsf Maybe. In general I hate plumbing and drains seem to be particularly troublesome. I think you need to mess with the drain pipes and once touched, they will haunt you to the end of your days.
Edit: Nope. I was wrong. Apparently they just press into the existing drain. Even I could (probably) do that.
Once again, the term “Universal” should be “fits the majority” of bathroom sinks in this case. Looks like the #1 complaint about these is “This doesn’t fit in my sink properly.”
Ugh what an annoying link. Anyway a deep sink drain with a basket. It’s fine. That basket gets clogged quickly. Which means it’s catching stuff… Just you have to manually clear it
@mike808@NoGenocide@yakkoTDI I tried but I’m on my phone. Trying trim it has failed multiple times. For other things.i figured no one cared about a drain and gave up lol. Thanks though. Amazon just started doing that. Very annoying
@mike808@yakkoTDI@unksol thanks! Unfortunately, it looks like that is actually not compatible with a disposal. I am trying to find something that will catch most but still allow the disposal to be there if/when needed.
i went to that deeper basket style because it seemed like it would give more depth before blocking and I couldn’t really trust the person who was sometimes living with me at the time to NOT throw everything down the disposal.
Somewhat ironically it died on me and some eggshells. Which… Yes should have been binned. But it died by the plate below the drain just. Rusting through/disintegrating probably 15-20 years in. And I just didn’t see the need/want for a new one.
I don’t put much food in the trash. Peeling fruit/veg is a waste. Bits/trimmings can go in a bag in the freezer for stock/trash. I never got good about the compost pile…
The one problem with those deep hole style vs just a mesh… And this is probably just a me issue. Cat hair.
I found an old-fashioned rubber drain stopper, with metal loop on top (if you want to add a chain) for 39¢. Bought a gross-- sell ya one for only $9.99…
I received a box of two, new and unsullied. Installed one. Clear directions, took maybe a minute, seems to work great. The rare rave review from me. Don’t really need the second.

it’s not a stopper, it’s a drain in your drain, dawg
You think it would work good enough to stop active diarrhea, so I can go into the roach motel pool ?
@seespotbark All right, well I regret everything that led to me reading this post.
@seespotbark Going into the roach motel pool gave you the diarrhea to begin with so why bother??
@AaronLeeJohnson I logged in for the first time in months just to be able to star-agree with this comment
@MrGoodGuy lol
@televiper Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
@Jonas4321
ISWYDT! Love that song…
@chienfou OMG me too. A link to a live performance of that song popped into my Quora feed yesterday, so my brain was primed to go there.
@chienfou @Jonas4321
Me too!

I guess if I knew the dimensions of my sink this would be useful. But I don’t need this for my sink as much as I need it for the tub or is it really just a matter of it fitting into the hole regardless?

@werehatrack what is this simpler thing? Asking for a friend.
@katbyter @werehatrack also curious. There are of course silicone/plastic ones you can just set over a tub/shower drain.

I imagine those would be fast to shake the hair off
@werehatrack Our cats won’t go anywhere near a tub/shower.
Their raison d’être is to distribute their fur evenly around the rugs and furniture.
@katbyter @unksol The plastic thing we’re using is that HD item. I don’t know where my partner sourced it; he doesn’t do Home Depot. (I do. Much Ryobi.)
@macromeh @werehatrack lol there is hair everywhere stuck to everything. Need to wipe the whole house down
@katbyter @werehatrack those plastic things have been working for decades. Before I was born at least. They don’t have the built in stopper obviously/ you just have a manual stopper you put over it.
@werehatrack have you tried not showering with your cats?

Even considering the scratches
@unksol @werehatrack I have one of those. The hair doesn’t shake off like one would hope. You have to pick it out from the entanglement of the plastic nub teeth. Which no one else in the house seems capable of doing. They must be weakened by all the hair loss.
@katbyter @werehatrack lol I had three sisters with long hair… Um… No comment
@sflesch

But the hair is always with you my Padawan
@katbyter @werehatrack but nothing wrong with some minor competition. We can’t stop the fight at this point. Steel for what we can. Fight back hard
Aw yeah! This is the shit I come to Meh for.
First pic looked like a different type of “plug.”

@iggy71 Great minds think alike.

I have an annoying IKEA sink thingie - could I change it to this seemingly less annoying sink thingie I have moderately stalked on Instagram?
@heartfeltsf Maybe. In general I hate plumbing and drains seem to be particularly troublesome. I think you need to mess with the drain pipes and once touched, they will haunt you to the end of your days.
Edit: Nope. I was wrong. Apparently they just press into the existing drain. Even I could (probably) do that.
Turn a regular sink into an ugly, branded sink. (It’s a nifty contraption, but no to the etching.)
The AI movie parody is, of course, “Bourne in the USA,” starring Tom Cruise and Matt Damon as the wheelchair.
We have the Sink Shroom but if I didn’t have it I’d buy this one! Oh well…

This is the Sink Shroom…

These are great! We didn’t get them here, but they’re so worth it.
Do these fit a kitchen sink drain? Ours is a large drain leading to a disposal (but we don’t like to use disposal because we’re on septic).
@NoGenocide Nope. These arefor vanity bathroom sinks.
@mike808 @NoGenocide so you wouldn’t want this for a kitchen sink. Especially to avoid the disposal. When mine died I went with this style cause septic

@mike808 @NoGenocide @yakkoTDI they sell sink strainers. Ton of options on Amazon if you just search “sink strainer”
An example not sure id pick this one

@mike808 @NoGenocide @unksol @yakkoTDI Stainless mesh kitchen sink strainers are sold in many places including a lot of more-than-99-cent stores, grocery stores in the gadget aisle, and Wallyworld, like this one (which is neither the best nor the cheapest): https://www.walmart.com/ip/GoodCook-Mesh-Sink-Strainer/304852187

You paid $56+ for 1 and got 143 more for free that you’ll never use.
