Fleece?
Thin knit cover over a thin layer of a clone of Thinsulate?
Mystery neoprene-foam-like stuff?
Actual quilted interior with a decent knit cover?
The specs say many things about the LEDs, but next to nothing about the warming characteristics of the headwear, which is kind of important.
Before anyone (including me) lampoons the puny light output of these, I will point out that not so long ago, a multiple-D-cell Maglite only produced about 35 lumens, and we thought that was pretty neat. And the pocket two-AA Maglite was a standard tool for mechanics and others, with lumens output in the single digits.
That said, my pocket EDC 14500-cell lights are over 100 lumens, but not by much, with a more focused area of illumination that makes them a lot more useful than something that diffuses more widely. But for a hike down to the minimart to grab a couple of things, the caps or beanies leave hands free for whatever needs might arise. I’d call these seasonal; the ball cap version seems oriented toward warm weather, but is the beanie warm enough to aspire to winter utility? Inquiring minds want to know.
@therealjrn@werehatrack Never “had to” hit anybody, he says…. I’m tempted to put in a laugh emoji as I mean that as a kind-hearted, neighborly joke, but given the current events, I can’t joke in this manner. Still, I’m heartened to hear that civility was maintained in your situation. I’ll keep the rest of my discourse out of this thread.
@werehatrack
Oh, @mehvid1, no need to explain lol. It was a half-way house, meaning half-way in and half-way out. No fences, no handcuffs, no belly chains, none of that. I didn’t carry a gun or a tazer. Just a big ass flashlight.
Just me and about 300 of my closest felonious friends. Our typical inmate was in for non-violent drug offenses. This was their last stop in the system before getting out. Most of them worked outside jobs, and signed in and out. They were highly motivated not to fuck this up.
I worked the overnight shift mostly. We were out in the country underneath God’s beautiful Oklahoma sky. It was nice. I liked it out there.
@cfg83 No flame war I’ve seen has ever reached the length of the Existential Flame War on the old alt.callahans Usenet newsgroup. And none has ever been as much fun, either.
I’ve had the orange and camo ballcaps for over a decade and I love them. Two for $18 is an amazing price, so I’m in for a set of white and navy to replace my aging ones.
48 lumens are not very bright, but i’m not very bright & i do just fine + i need those 8 dic batteries!! But JSYK, the light would Not shine anywhere like d brightness as dipicted & thoe photos!! None of us are dumb enough to believe that!!
I thought I remembered getting a thing similar to the beanie in an IRK once, so I dug around in one of my not-used-yet StuffPiles™ and there it was. Except it’s different. The one I’ve got has four less-bright dimmable LEDs that are pointed straight out from the beanie instead of ahead and down, and it’s a regular knit toque with a rubber flange to hold the removable-on-laundry-day light puck. I think the light on the ones in this offer might be more useful. I dunno about the beanie itself, since nothing’s been said about the qualities of the material involved.
That said, I need to haul the trash and recycling bins out to the curb, so the light on the one I have is going to get tested now.

This is not a bright idea. More like a blight idea.
@yakkoTDI Agreed. This is one of the stupider items Meh has inflicted on us…
To the buyer for this deal,

@phendrick Younger folks here can just scratch their pates and wonder.
@phendrick
Like my pappy told me: “The pants do all the work, but the vest gets all the gravy”
…Pappy liked to drink, now and then…
@phendrick @therealjrn- yeah,… the glass does all the work, but the booze gets all the credit!!

@phendrick
Cheers, @1DisabledWarVet!
i feel like a cap and beanie 2 pack would make more sense
@omally Me too.

OH GOOD LORD!!! HOW MUCH SNOW IS THERE???

@therealjrn There is only one quantity of snow that requires shovelling, and that is “too much.”

@werehatrack
I carried one on rounds when I worked at the DOC half-way house. Never had to hit anybody with it, but it was reassuring.
They should have put together a cap and beanie combo. I don’t “need” either one, but I’d be more tempted.

Must resist the nerd urge. Snap out of it. This will not make me look cool.
@hchavers Orange is the new black, or so I’ve heard. Camo with a bright light in it seems kind of oxymoronic…
@hchavers @werehatrack Hidden by day, highly targetable by night…
@hchavers @werehatrack
Also just plain moronic.
@hchavers @werehatrack-Yeah, + if some goon, or ICE thug shoots at the light in their eyes, they’re gonna shoot you in the face! 🫣
I have a specific reason for not needing these that’s slightly less compelling than I had hoped it would be, so I failed to not purchase them. Dammit.

@mediocrebot It’s like a comic about a sanitized pollical bullshit thread…
@mediocrebot @shahnm Ohhhhh, that ReplyGuy42 used to have LEGENDARY flame wars with Gharlane of Eddore. Microwave the popcorn, sit back, and enjoy!

@RDeichsel You love them as hats, or because of the lights?
@Kyeh They’re great hats and I love that whenever I need a little illumination I just click the button and I have light.

We’ll all stand by here!
