I still remember the first time I ate a slim Jim. I was on a road trip. We went to the gas station and filled the van up with as much gas as it would take. The vehicle smelled like Gasoline for a bit afterwards which was strange. You can’t overfill a vehicle with gas, or could you?
Is this 3 packs of 12 or 2 of 18 or 1 of 36? There really doesn’t need to be a best buy date on these things. I assume they taste the same now or 20 years from now.
Meat sticks are usually $1/stick at my local grocery store when they’re on sale, never lower. So this seems like a good deal, but not necessarily an amazing one. However, I’ve never seen this flavor locally… Should I take a gamble on it? Has anyone tried this particular stick with chili and limón before?
@2dStorySleestak Keep in mind these are the big 2oz sticks. Normal size is 1oz. I sampled these and they have a little kick but not too much and they’re pretty enjoyable. YMMV!
It does not surprise me that this flavor was not a huge hit, resulting in it getting remaindered to Meh with not a lot of time left on its “best by” clock. I’ve had similar items that were still edible for months after their marked date, and I’d expect that these would probably do the same. But this is not a flavor I want, so I’ll pass. (Apparently, so did a lot of other folks ahead of me.)
If you like SlimJim and the Chile Limon flavor profile, and you grab some, let the rest of us know what your opinion is about the flavor. Positive feedback could cause the unsold boxes to get moved out from SideDeal. Negative feedback will cause the rest of us to be glad we skipped it, until we get six cases of it in an IRK (along with craft paint, underwear in size XS, two TrackRs, a square of cardboard from one of the pizza boxes that was delivered for the “company Thanksgiving lunch”, a returned Quip sonic toothbrush with a battery that has corroded itself in place, and an IRK bag in exactly the same color as the last two.) So please, for Cthulhu’s sake, if you like this stuff, tell everyone so that Meh won’t have any left when the third or fourth Mehrathon of 2025 comes along. (Unless the desperate distributor has even more of it available to dumpship, that is.)
Ok, so yeah, over a third of your sodium for the day. Corn syrup, eh. Spices and such. Various preservatives that render the best by date a suggestion probably, surely great for you. No fake-sugar-poison at least?
@EvilSmoo Is that “⅕ meat” based on 11g protein out of 55g serving?
I’m curious (but too lazy at the moment) to do a proper bit of research on it, but my quick check turned up a claim that meat is approximately
⅕ protein
⅕ fat
⅗ water
That’s obviously going to fluctuate based on the type and cut of meat, and the water indicates it’s very raw, but at least it says protein ≈ fat (by weight). And, also, it’s approximately 0g carbohydrates.
So while I think it’s probably at least ½ meat in total, that doesn’t suddenly make it anything more than “a gas station type meat stick.”
As for myself, I’m still undecided. If much rather try out a smaller portion before committing to the whole thing. I’ve not been a fan of Slim Jims in the past, but the relative quality improves as the price decreases…
@EvilSmoo did you do some kind of secret chemical analysis of one of these to determine that they’re 1/5 meat? I’m guessing you assumed the meat is all protein, and all the protein is from meat. Both assumptions would be wrong, making your “calculations” wrong. If you’re going to overanalyze clearly unhealthy snacks, maybe try to understand what you’re talking about first. Or maybe just avoid being the guy who points out that slim jims have sodium and candy has sugar.
Fwiw, reading in the details of that page which says protein and fat come in equal amounts, they list the numbers on several different cuts of meat.
The only one listed actually having equal fat and protein is pork spareribs. On pretty much everything else, the fat is ¼-½ the amount of protein by weight.
The fact they have so much more fat than protein tells me they’re specifically putting in fatty portions. Which, I suppose, is expected. I’m told that most people like the softness and flavor of higher-fat jerky (and so forth).
Wowza…I hadn’t focused on the price & can’t imagine enjoying thirty bucks worth of this. OTOH, I’m not sure why I wound up on Meh when I hadn’t focused on the price. Maybe I’ll order three.
@mehtenizer If you went through all of them solo before their best-by date, maybe you’d expire before the warranty did, in which case it becomes a lifetime warranty.
@pixelated Chile Limon is a really popular flavor profile here in the Southwest. Sadly, the Food Fashionistas have grabbed it and started to stick it on damn near anything snacky. I doubt that they’ll stop until it’s been misapplied to Oreos and Reese’s Pieces. There has already been an attempt to shoehorn it into a soft drink briefly, poorly, and with a gratifying lack of success.

@AaronLeeJohnson @dvermilion Look at those prices!

@2dStorySleestak I don’t know if this flavor is any good but these are $6 each at the convenience stores near me.

Uh, but how do you make a meat stick that’s only 1/5 made of meat? Just thought of that. I guess that’s the “soy flour” and water, huh.
But it’s a gas station type meat stick, you know what you signed up for.
@EvilSmoo what was it about this product that made you think it might be health food?

@EvilSmoo, no one buys a slim Jim thinking it’s healthy.
@warpedrotors
It’s corporate-health “food”.
And I suspect that a good bit of the protein is from the soy.
bit pricey innit
@DrunkCat By comparison to the single-stick price at CircleK?

Regular flavor (like in the past), I would have been a buyer. But no thanks on the lime.
Eat Me!
Expiration? Best by? Slim Jims are eternal!
These things have so much salt that they’ll prob still be “good” after they expire.
Interestingly, the warranty lasts beyond the expiration date.
Best by: 1/16/2025
Warranty: 90 days; 2/12/2025

Spicy with sour?
Nope!
All yours.

Nice write up today.
