We have had the hammock type that @gumbercules nicely showed above for years and we greatly prefer those over today’s offering because they help prevent our dogs from falling into the foot well behind the front seats. They also keep all the loose dog hair in the device so we can slide it out and shake it out outside of the car, saving a bit of vacuuming.

I can vouch that they do. I don’t have any pets but put one of these under the kids car seats and left it there for several years after the car seats were gone until the end of the messy stage.
My Pomeranian has to sit up front or she pukes. My dachshund will not sit in the back under any circumstances because his sister is up front. I’ve had to jury rig a big dog seat that’s normally for the back to go into the front seat.
In other words, I’d love one if these but it would be ignored!
