Back to Smart School: Win a Full Refund, $20 in Coupons & an IRK
11DEADLINE MONDAY, 9/8/26
Back-to-school season is here, and six formerly “smart” products are showing up on Meh and SideDeal without their app or any apparent interest in applying themselves.
They still perform their actual jobs using the controls on the products themselves. But their app-connected features have been held back a grade.
We think at least some of them can do better.
Maybe they need a different app. Maybe there’s a pairing process, firmware update, regional setting, APK, workaround, or particularly persuasive lecture that can restore their former smart functions.
That’s your assignment:
Teach one product to be smart again
Be the first person to post a complete, working, and reproducible fix that restores the smart functions on one of the six products, and you’ll receive:
- A full refund of the purchase price of the product you succesfully re-smarted
- A free IRK
- Four $5 coupons redeemable on Meh or SideDeal
- The temporary respect of the Meh community
There can be up to six winners—one for each product. But each person may claim only one passing grade.
The Rules
1. Pick one subject
Your entry must cover one product and one product only. Once you submit a fix for that product, you may not submit a fix for another one.
No sextuple dipping. This isn’t an advanced-placement course. We won’t stop you from buying more than one item, though.
2. Don’t do everyone else’s homework
Even if you figure out how to restore the smart functions on multiple products, post the solution for only the one you’re claiming.
We don’t want one overachiever handing in the entire answer key and ruining the assignment for everyone else.
3. Show your work
Tell us exactly what you did or downloaded. Your instructions should include everything another buyer would need to reproduce your results, including, where applicable:
- The app, APK, software, or firmware used
- App and software version numbers
- Phone or device model
- Operating system
- Account region or server selection
- Pairing and setup steps
- Any unusual settings, resets, button combinations, or workarounds
4. Video proof is required
Your entry must include a video clearly showing the app controlling the physical product. No voiceover is required if you’re shy! The app command and the product’s response must both be visible—preferably in one continuous, unedited recording. Pictures and screenshots may be included to document the setup, pairing process, app version, or settings, but pictures alone will not qualify as proof. A screenshot showing that the product appears in an app is not enough. We need to see that it actually learned something.
5. Restore the product’s actual smart functions
Plugging the product into a smart plug does not count.
Neither does attaching a button-pushing robot, training a child to operate it remotely, or having someone stand off-camera and press the controls while you yell, “Alexa.”
The original app-connected functionality—or a reasonably equivalent version of it—must be restored.
6. The first verified solution wins
The first complete, reproducible, and verified solution posted in this thread for each product earns that product’s prize.
Placeholder posts, theories, partial instructions, and “I solved it, video coming later” will not reserve your place in class. We’ll use the timestamp of the first completed qualifying submission.
7. You must have purchased the product
To receive the refund, you must have purchased the product from one of tonight’s Meh or SideDeal events.
8. Don’t bypass safety protections
A solution that bypasses electrical, thermal, pressure, or other built-in safety features does not count. Bringing something back from the dead is fun. Bringing your kitchen down with it is less fun.
Turn in your assignment using this format
- Product:
- App/software and version:
- Phone/device and operating system:
- Exact setup and pairing steps:
- Which smart functions were restored:
- Video proving that it works (no voiceover required):
- Optional setup pictures or screenshots:
- Anything else needed to reproduce the fix:
We’ll update this post whenever one of the six products earns its smart credentials.
Six products are reporting for remedial smart class. Let’s see which ones graduate.

[Looking for cheap labor??
]
It’d be helpful to know exactly WHICH smart function(s) need to be restored for any product before going into this and committing by purchasing.
And do I understand correctly: Meh is basically looking for new app programming for these items? Mostly restoring remote functionality?
@phendrick Getting it to work with Alexa or Google, or controlling the unit from your phone from any app. We’re not going to be too strict here – any smart capabilities will do!
We’re not looking for new app programming, but we understand there are some alternative smart home apps out there that offer compatibility with a lot of devices that have since had their native apps discontinued.
I’ve added the user manuals to each product page. The qualifying products are:
Quirky Trek Backpack - get the USB-C port to charge your modern phone (we’ve tested and have had difficulty)
Enabling any control of the below 5 devices from your phone or voice assistant Note that our directions state that you can’t just use an Alexa or Google-enabled smart plug to turn it off & on – you need to control it from a phone while its plugged into a normal outlet.
@phendrick @troy What is the Time Limit
?
I’d be surprised if you couldn’t get these working through the Tuya app…
@visioneer_one
So here’s your chance to get one of these “for free”
I’m out. I’m not smart enough. This is not my thing.
well, i’m not an app hacker but i’ve wanted to try sous vide. after vmp discount and $6 available stores.com cash, $12 isn’t so bad to try it out.
@jaybird Rats! I forgot about that discount.
@jaybird @phendrick
Even if you never use a phone app to control it, I think you’ll appreciate the outcome. My sous vide stick is not smart capable, but I love using it.
You’re offering way too little compensation for the kind of work you want done. I’m sure you’ve already tried different apps yourself, so your best bet here is probably decompiling and modding specific APKs. That’s $200/hour work, not “four coupons and a mystery box with worn sweatpants and face masks from 2021 inside” work.
@ShotgunX
But that scenario puts you at the “creating an app that you would then have to distribute” point. Maintenance of THAT app would then be problematic…
@ShotgunX We don’t want or need any work done – These were cheap and we’re selling them for cheap. We’re totally fine selling these as dumb appliances that have lost their smart ways. However, if you’re interested in trying to restore any smart functionality and getting a full refund, an IRK and $20 in coupons to share how you did it… that option is available!
@ShotgunX Note there’s no requirement to be the person to actually create the workaround/alternative. So it’s more of a finder’s fee, or maybe for writing a guide to what they (or someone else) already did.
I think they’re overestimating how much free time their customers have. Especially customers with the required aptitude.
May the odds/force/whatever be with you/in your favor!
@walarney I believe the term is “appitude” in this case.
Soooo, these are orphans …
/showme Orphanage for smart appliances that no longer have working apps.
@cfg83 Here’s the image you requested for “Orphanage for smart appliances that no longer have working apps.”
@mediocrebot Sometimes I feel I have gone too far. Sometimes.
@cfg83 @mediocrebot But maybe, just maybe, you’re contributing to the
delinquencyascendancy of an AI bot. (And apparently the burgeoning sense of humor. I definitely chuckled at some of those signs.)@mediocrebot @phendrick Without a sense of humor you end up being a nomad with no friends except maybe your Creator …
@cfg83 @mediocrebot @phendrick vector where are you!
@dahobbs9 @mediocrebot @phendrick I am not sure about vector, but I do think we can find car 54 …
I ordered the kettle for this challenge, but 5 minutes of research told me that the standalone quirky Wi-Fi Smart appliances use proprietary hardware and no one has yet been able to repurpose them. I’m not delusional enough to think I can do something that the smart home/Reddit army hasn’t been able to do. At least not with this attitude, I can’t.
On the plus side, I was reminded that the wink relay I haven’t yet taken out of service can be rooted and turned into a homeassistant panel. Wink locked down later products much more securely.
Good luck, Mehtizens.
@Kidsandliz they’re not at all useless items… Just the smart part is not the same as 95% of everything else in the world, where they use one of a handful of premade components to bring the connectivity to the item. Instead they made their own hardware and hard coded it to talk to the servers that no longer exist.
That kettle for $20 is a great deal. But the scope of the project to make it smart again is much different. Now that I’ve slept on it, I actually have a plan that should work, but it’s taking the long way around. Maybe three other people would even do it if I published how, and the effort would way outscale the reward here - it would have to be driven by the satisfaction of conquering the thing. On the bright side, it would be applicable to pretty much everything.
To add on to my thought… This isn’t some devious marketing scheme to move junk (any more than the whole of Meh is). It’s a fun idea to create something in the community for the few people that would probably want to do something like this on their own by incentivizing actually doing it and sharing the story. At least that’s how I see it.
@djslack OK that makes sense. Somehow I missed that it functions without the “smart” aspect being functional as some things don’t. That’s for correcting me about that.
Glad you have the skill set to figure out this challenge. I don’t unfortunately.
@djslack and so with all the positive results with the Tuya app I have learned a lesson about doing a quick search, taking the Google AI’s word for it and moving on…
I still got a cool kettle that will stop at 185, and now I have instructions on how to make it SMRT too.
Just saw this article …
Domesticating AI: Why vibe coding feels like cheating
https://newatlas.com/ai-humanoids/domesticating-ai-why-vibe-coding-feels-like-cheating/
I hope you keep this pinned to the top of the page long enough for items to be delivered and have a solution presented.
Gonna take the easy win for the Boil kettle…
Video demo (please ignore my nails):
I have an iPhone running the iOS 27 beta, and downloaded the current version of the Tuya app (7.10.0).
P.S. It looks like the Tuya app is almost identical to the SmartLife app, so if you’re already using one of those, you should be able to make it work in either. I haven’t tested it yet but I’d be surprised if it doesn’t work!
@agnesnutter Doesn’t work on a Samsung, though. Set the Wi-Fi to 2.4 and everything.
@EvilSmoo Hm, I just followed the exact same steps on a Samsung Galaxy S24 and it works fine. Troubleshooting:
(also whoops, yes, 2.4GHz, haha. I should know that, as an IT professional…)
@agnesnutter @EvilSmoo I got it working without issue on an S26 Ultra.
@agnesnutter @kyanostiger What was your wifi network and cell phone setup?
@agnesnutter nice job!
You have my temporary respect. Please stay tuned for the prizes promised
@EvilSmoo I’m not sure what type of information you’re looking for when you refer to “my setup”, but I think it’s pretty standard: I’m using basically default router settings, a WPA2 password, and practicing poor network hygiene by having my IoT devices on the same network as everything else (a single AP serving 2.4 and 5 GHz bands). I also don’t have anything set up like a Pi-hole or DNS filters.
Yeah, I never got it to work. A slow blink put up an access point that vanishes at the first connection attempt, and every single fast blink setup timed out.
For those who are suspicious of the Tuya app the kettle is (in principle) hackable with tuya-convert (ID starting with 01 not 02) however in may case flashing failed, so, for now, I have a dumb kettle…
@agnesnutter
Please don’t forget to post your irk here when it shows up. Hopefully they will curate some ‘special ones’ for us.
@chienfou “us” is bold, haha! fingers crossed for you that they ignore Troy’s previous message listing the eligible products for this challenge
@agnesnutter
Wait! What? It clearly says six items in the original post. Packing a change in the rules in the middle of a response to someone else’s post later hardly seems fair. Was I expected to read all that crap??
@chienfou Oh, I had thought you were joking, since it didn’t have any smart features!
The six items Troy mentioned are Backpack, Boil, Cafe, Aqua, Roast, and Cool — the six that have functionality to be restored
But perhaps Meh will honor the bit anyway.
@agnesnutter
I was going off the sidedeal link in the OP… which lists 6 items as being for sale, including this one (wasn’t sure until it arrived that it wasn’t a smart plug). Granted, some smartassery was included free of charge, but I just thought they had lumped it in there inadvertently at that point.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chienfou To be fair, right before the SideDeal link it does send you to the backpack on Meh, but your conclusion is entirely understandable. I might have done the same
(also, wow, Quirky BOIL sure looks exactly the same as this other kettle SideDeal is selling rn…)
@agnesnutter Someone should buy one as a public service and check the FCC ID on the bottom.
@agnesnutter I thought the same thing.
Huzzah… I have successfully restored the Quirky Pivot Power Mini Surge Protector Power Station to it’s original state of SMART functions!
It took me several days of waiting for the product to arrive, then 2 days of procrastination before I could finally get this posted. But, at last, here goes:
Quirky Pivot Power Mini Surge Protector Power Station
Nothing special
works equally well while using ANY phone (Android or IOS), even a landline!!
Purchase said device
Open package
Plug it into a US style 110v outlet
Voila
(I guess actually for it to be a pair you would need 2)
All the ones it was designed to have originally (in other words NONE)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yaExcWFtFdU
I hope you are happy making me upload this to an account on YT I forgot I even had…
None needed / none provided. If you can’t find your own outlets, that’s on you!
An active SideDeal account for purchasing the product.
$8.99 plus S&H (if applicable) minus any discounts (Stores.com cash or IRK coupons etc.)
Well, thanks for letting me participate in this endeavor and I look forward to my rewards…
Ciao - Chienfou
@chienfou
!!!
@chienfou
. Wow. Now can you get my TrackRs to work with an iOS app?
@rcwbbb
Nope!u
But if you bought the Barbie play set the other day you can use them for pizza pans!
@troy

So, I’m guessing this entry didn’t fly?
@chienfou The task was re-smarting a dumb product, and with the Pivot Power not being a previously “Smart” product and you stating such… I couldn’t tell if this was a joke
I do appreciate the participation… I just need the weekend to mull it over. I think I’ve already decided yes, but I might pivot to no.
PIVOT OK fine, you win the prizes… I’ll be handling the first batch of winners next week
@troy
Thank you. In my defense I honestly did believe you had lumped that in with the items for the task. And I truthfully did not know for sure it was not a smart plug until it arrived and saw no mention of that in the instruction manual.
@rcwbbb Remote Desktop app to your laptop computer running the SwiftFinder Android app via the Android emulator BlueStacks or similar.
(Not nearly as useful, but hey!)
wow.

@ndimitru Here’s the image you requested for “a good looking pork butt”
um.

@ndimitru Here’s the image you requested for “a good looking pork butt with a smile and a hat”
@ndimitru From Through the Looking Glass:

Exactly what I was looking for! Now back to the conversation at hand.
@ndimitru
I think I missed something…
Well, I was able to get the coffee maker connected and the sous vide device connected via the Tuya app. For my contest entry, I’m submitting the coffee maker.
Follow the first three steps above as submitted by agnesnutter.
4. Select kitchen appliances on the left and then scroll down and select coffee machine under brewing.
5. Step five was a whole lot of trial and error. Lots of trial and error and combinations. Ultimately what I did first was push and hold the program button until the green light started blinking quickly. Next, I pushed and held the on-off light for about 5 or so seconds until the red, run light started blinking slowly. So yes, both lights were blinking.
6. Follow the tuya app prompts and it will fail on the first go round. Then you will click the try other modes button underneath the orange retry button. Select Wi-Fi and confirm the indicator is blinking slowly, and then select the blink quickly button. Honestly I did have to try many times clicking the quickly and the slowly buttons. Next where it will ask you to enter your Wi-Fi password, you will actually hit the select Wi-Fi button off to the right. From there you will select your network at 2.4 GHz and enter your password. Continue to follow the prompts until it is connected.
I tried multiple times with my s23 ultra and then it finally connected to my account with my pixel 7. However, since I set up an account with tuya, it does work after connection on both phones in the app.
Ultimately, the smart functionality is pretty useless for the coffee pot. You can set the time for auto Brew, or you can manually start the coffee pot. I guess that works if you don’t know what time you will wake up and want to just hit the button from the bed as you roll out of it. I’ll attach video link to a different comment underneath.
Bird Out
@jaybird https://youtube.com/shorts/7yhADnN8tTY?is=SRY_vbB0uP35FJKy
The pause button in the app does not stop the coffee pot as is evidenced in the video why I had to manually hit the stop button on the machine so I could set the timer and restart it.
Though it is not my official entry, the sous vide interface works better in that I think it just has more smart features that you can control. A smart coffee maker was just somebody with too much time and money on their hands in the r&d department
Someone hit "send, too early?
Can we get an official statement on what devices are now claimed and that this is still open for those that haven’t been solved yet?
Does purchasing the Quirky Trek through the Mehrathon today (Aug 14) count as a qualifying purchase since it seems no one has done that one yet?
@SaintO We have 4 remaining items:
@SaintO @troy What about the SOLAC kettle. Shouldn’t that be on the list?
@ergomeh SOLAC, although same design as the Quirky Boil, is not part of this challenge.
@troy Does it have the same FCC ID (2AANZBOIL) as the Quirky? The Quirky needs the WiFi chip for the “Prog” functions (eg temp +/-) so unless it’s a complete electronic redesign and it’s just the exterior that looks the same it’s probably smart-able. (They could have reflashed it to be dumb but that’s effort). Push and hold “Prog” and see if the blue led flashes - if so the @agnesnutter approach will likely work on it too.
@ergomeh
So, if I’m following what you’re saying, the FCC id is unique to a specific product design regardless of the brand label on it. Correct? When I stick that ID in the FCC’s product finder the only thing that pops up is the Quirky. Having a different brand label slapped on it is immaterial? Now you have me on a mission to check some of the FCC IDs on a few look-alike items I have around.
Also, FWIW, the FCC information shows a submission date of October 2019!! Almost 7 years ago! Pretty wild.
Thanks for sending me down that rabbit trail. TIL.
