After the recalls and the news coverage of house fires and injuries, enthusiasm for them tanked.
In the years since, they’ve gone far enough out of fashion that about two years ago, a local thrift store had two pallets of them that were old stock from a store that gave up on them. They wanted twenty bucks each, no warranty at all, and no, you couldn’t unbox it first and check to see if the battery would take a charge. I passed. I will note that a lot of public indoor spaces banned them back when they were still a popular thing, and not just because of the torchy batteries.
I’m slightly surprised that there are any still on the market. I haven’t seen one in use since at least 2019.
@Keyblader007 I looked into that. Turns out a badly made Lithium Battery (or just one that malfunctions due to pressure or heat) will explode, and I guess what was happening with those boards was that a bunch of them just had bad batteries in them (or they were being overcharged, I can’t remember the specifics).
@AaronLeeJohnson All I know is stores like BestBuy stopped selling them because of that issue and haven’t really changed unless its online only but in store they stopped.
@Keyblader007 The UL listed battery is supposed to not catch fire/burn your house down, unlike some of the early hoverboards… I’ve still got the one I bought here about 5-6 years ago that was refurbished with the UL-listed pack. Range is pretty sad, but still makes it back and forth to my kid’s school (he’s a walker)
@goldnectar If you can easily ride a skateboard, a unicycle, a wakeboard AND a slalom waterski, I can’t convince you not to get this. However, if any or all of these present a challenge to you, remember that the ground you ride these on is really, REALLY hard, and your first bodily point of impact when this flies out from under you will either be an easily fractured wrist or your coccyx, neither of which are easily protected by gear. Yes, this is experience talking.
You do you.
@goldnectar I’m almost 44, and am known in my 'hood as the hoverboard dad, because I often accompany my 7yr old to school or the pool on my (6+yr old refurbished, meh hoverboard); Sometimes I hover around the 'hood smoking a cigar.
@goldnectar You will lose your balance and fall off it. Reflexively, you will throw out your hands to catch the fall and all your weight will land upon one of your wrists, badly injuring it.
These are roller boards, and honestly there’s nothing wrong with that, but a real hoverboard has two huge problems.
First: The amount of power required to get the object to levitate has not been miniaturized.
Second: We’re too fat.
@AaronLeeJohnson Third, for the only technology we understand that might make it possible, the surface understructure to generate the magnetic repulsion has to be in place, and that would be way beyond merely expensive.
@AaronLeeJohnson Fourth, it would be incredibly hard to ride. There would be no friction to keep it stable.
If you look up the “Lexus Hoverboard”, there are some good videos.
That warranty is from Meh, not the manufacturer. If the board craps out, they may want you to return it, but all that will happen is a refund; no repair, no replacement.
@PooltoyWolf yes they are! I have one I bought about four or five years ago that I had to go card attachment to and it’s really cool to ride around on! Plus, with the go-kart attachment you don’t have to worry about falling off and busting your ass!
This was an instant sale, if it happened on or shortly after payday. Instead, you drop it on a Mon two days before payday which means I have already spent my discretionary money and can’t impulse buy this thing.
If you all could synchronize your hot items for when I have cash, it would be appreciated.
@Michaelforman ok big talker…you are now required to buy this. As @troy said, if u come back to this page it will still be here (unless it sells out). Meh pretty quietly implemented this change a while ago. I don’t know how many days they stay available, but it is several.
Different model (supposedly), but same fire hazard applies to all Hoverboards. The original company went out of business because of this issue.
If you do buy one, DO NOT CHARGE THEM INSIDE YOUR HOUSE. The original Hoverboards had a serious safety issue when they were left charging unattended for longer than the instructions said to do so. I personally know a guy that lost EVERYTHING in his apartment because of one of these. The sprinkler system did put out the small fire, but the chemicals in that sprinkler system ruined everything he owned. The fire department wouldn’t let him try to salvage anything because of the toxic chemicals in that water.
All the specs are bolded except Weight Limit which is not bolded but has four asterisks. What are you trying to say without saying here Meh?? Because I don’t follow…
Recent Amazon reviews are NOT encouraging. I tried rollerblades back in the late 80’s, and after some serious road-rash, switched to ice skates. If/when you fall on those, you’re on a nearly frictionless surface, usually protected by some (expensive) gear. This thing screams Trip to the ER…

I prefer to do my crashing on a bicycle.
@yakkoTDI I agree 100%! I love my bike!
Just like “AI” these will never go out of fashion.
@DrunkCat AI is in fashion? Is it an accessory like a dickey or a main item like a one button coat that’s fingertip draped?
@yakkoTDI lol okay mr. “incorrect fact”. bot some more
@DrunkCat Loads of them got recalled as fire hazard issues back when they were a hot thing (sometimes too literally). These are just two of the many:

I’m still holding out for the Back to the Future hoverboard.
@toycardriver For now, this is the closest!
Don’t these blow up/catch fire?
@Keyblader007 That costs extra.
@Keyblader007 @yakkoTDI No. I think it costs extra for them to NOT catch on fire.
Now it should be fine.
@yakkoTDI lol

@AaronLeeJohnson @Keyblader007 cheap ones were cheap and skipped on safety
Hoverboard hoverdon’t
@hchavers I’m pretty sure air time will generally be less than a minute,
unless you follow Wile E Coyote off a cliff.
Someone convince me why, as a mid 40s man, I don’t need this.
@goldnectar bc you want to live to see your late 40’s?
@goldnectar You don’t need it because it will make all the ladies flock to your door. Who needs that hassle?
@goldnectar how good is your health insurance?
@goldnectar At 62, I’m thinking about it, but meh.
@goldnectar At 66, f**k no. The answer would’ve been the same when I was 46, and probably 26.
@goldnectar @phendrick I’m in my late 40s. Highly overrated.

@goldnectar I would do an electric bike though…
@goldnectar because the song, “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” will become your theme song.
@goldnectar You will lose your balance and fall off it. Reflexively, you will throw out your hands to catch the fall and all your weight will land upon one of your wrists, badly injuring it.

@AaronLeeJohnson @werehatrack Couldn’t it work like a UK hover lawnmower?
@AaronLeeJohnson @amusinglisa @werehatrack I’d never heard of a hover lawnmower - now there’s something I’d be much more interested in buying.
Will meh refund if defective? This hover company doesn’t seem very responsive.
@icerc As it says up above:
Warranty
90 days

These things are super fun with a go-kart attachment.
@PooltoyWolf yes they are! I have one I bought about four or five years ago that I had to go card attachment to and it’s really cool to ride around on! Plus, with the go-kart attachment you don’t have to worry about falling off and busting your ass!
@doubltap Yes, much more stable haha

I’m sure this thing is on this list…
Amazon says age range: kids, youth. What is the rider weight range on these?
@IAMIS up to 220lbs
https://www.hover-1.com/pages/support-ultra
2nd accordion
@IAMIS @Perkalicious Accordion, maybe.
Somehow, I can’t quite picture the Portland bagpiper running around on one of these.
@Perkalicious @werehatrack
Are there projects where these are torn down and turned into something else? Are the batteries good or ???
@cfg83 if you want batteries $80 will go far.
AVOID like the plague

HOW CAN IT BE A HOVERBOARD IF IT RIDES ON WHEELS???
Recent Amazon reviews are NOT encouraging. I tried rollerblades back in the late 80’s, and after some serious road-rash, switched to ice skates. If/when you fall on those, you’re on a nearly frictionless surface, usually protected by some (expensive) gear. This thing screams Trip to the ER…
If it could go even 25 miles and provide a generous payout when it kablooeyed I’d consider it.
Those boards don’t work on water!
