@ragingredd I generally end up doing all the driving anyway, so that’s not a big deal for me. (I have done way too many long trips behind the wheel over the years.)
@ragingredd@werehatrack Actually I enjoy the desolation of middle America and it’s nice to not have someone to feel a need to talk to. I usually start the AM in silence no music, kind of a “moment of Zen.” Then later in the day go to audiobooks.
@f00l@yakkoTDI the munchies imply they were maybe riding the magic bus already and don’t know or care who is driving (ain’t you?) or where they are going.
@xobzoo yeah hope this comes back more. Makes so much sense. Routes are limited now compared to the glory days. But my brother-in-law and his wife did one with a private 2-person room and said it was a very nice experience,
I’m not usually a fan of road trips but I did one through Canada and a few northern states recently.
It was us two humans and his dog and we slept in a rooftop tent. It was mostly a fun trip but I didn’t know that Manitoba and Saskatchewan were plains — like driving through Nebraska. And both of us at some point ended up in a Canadian urgent care.
@kittykat9180 got to be some interesting story behind that. There is a certain “peace” to the “boring” states, but you have to get into the Zen of it. ideally without ending up in Urgent care, though.
@pmarin, I wish there was a funny story behind it. For me, I had a UTI. For him it was an upper respiratory infection—that he probably got from sitting in the clinic with me.
It has been great traveling all over from Florida up I-95 and back, and I-10 and back with my best friend and wife. Now we take trips back to Florida to visit our families who stayed there.
@chienfou yup I had an efficient system when just dealing with me, myself, and a cat until he “retired.” I could cover a lot of miles starting at sunrise or before, but only going to near sunset; not later if I can avoid it.
Depends. Am i driving? Then alone. i don’t like the distraction of having to participate in idle chatter.
Someone else driving? Then 3 or four total allows the driver to not have to participate; i cringe when they do and turn their head to answer someone, especially at speed on the crowded thruways.
@phendrick bothers me when people do it in movies or TV shows. Total distraction from the dialog. Makes me want to yell “LOOK AT THE ROAD, YOU FOOL!” Sometimes it comes out…
@phendrick@ybmuG My long trips are in a truck and it doesn’t care if I pay attention or not. But the Tesla is now very strict about this, You can’t look away for more than a few seconds before it sends an alarm with “Please pay attention to the road!”
It’s apparently watching your eyes. Quite creepy. But actually good.
I enjoyed my long road trip myself. I got to stop where I wanted, spend as much time at places as I wanted and sleep all day if I was tired.
I tried doing a road trip with my brother and sister, I got 2 days in and flew home bc I couldn’t stand the indecisiveness. There’s only 2 people I could do a road trip with and ones my best friend the other is my boyfriend.
With an awe some friend!
@yakkoTDI yep I will agreed with you!
Never
With a best friend!
How are you gunna take turns driving if you don’t have a friend with you?!?
@ragingredd I generally end up doing all the driving anyway, so that’s not a big deal for me. (I have done way too many long trips behind the wheel over the years.)
@werehatrack same, really just would be nice to have someone to talk to.
@ragingredd @werehatrack Actually I enjoy the desolation of middle America and it’s nice to not have someone to feel a need to talk to. I usually start the AM in silence no music, kind of a “moment of Zen.” Then later in the day go to audiobooks.
@pmarin That looks very I-70-in-Kansas-in-January to me.
dog whines too much in the car
/showme a road trip with good friends
@mediocrebot Who is driving?!
@yakkoTDI
The ghost in the machine is driving.
Gotta prob with that?
@f00l @yakkoTDI the munchies imply they were maybe riding the magic bus already and don’t know or care who is driving (ain’t you?) or where they are going.
I voted for “just me and a dog” but the “dog” was actually a cat that behaved very dog-like at times.
@pmarin I know what that is like.
Me. Working vehicle. Comfort supplies.
With the right dog or the right friend it’s better unless I’m going to a bunch of places where that won’t work.
Audiobooks. Ahhhhh ….
It’s way too embarrassing for me to confess how big my audiobook library is
Besides, if I count all the purchases from various sources, the total count of audiobooks would be ???
I’ll never listen to all of them.
(It’s just so wonderful having a full library in my phone, I just wander from book to book).
My current fave headphones are my Shokz.
These probably won’t do great with music, but they’re great YouTube shorts and they’re astoundingly good for audiobooks
And they don’t block up your ears,
(I connect to the car audio when I’m driving)
On a train.
Railroad trips are road trips, right?
@xobzoo yeah hope this comes back more. Makes so much sense. Routes are limited now compared to the glory days. But my brother-in-law and his wife did one with a private 2-person room and said it was a very nice experience,

My main role during the trip was to be a head rest for the dog.

@olperfesser So just the 3 of you?
@olperfesser @phendrick, that’s what it sounds like to me.
Being as how we refer to dogs as man’s best friend, was the best friend a dog or a human?
Balancing wants & needs for more than two or three people in a car gets complicated.
@chienfou yup I had an efficient system when just dealing with me, myself, and a cat until he “retired.” I could cover a lot of miles starting at sunrise or before, but only going to near sunset; not later if I can avoid it.

Now there’s a road trip.
@f00l
Nobody listened to this?
Come on folks. It’s a great road trip song. Esp if getting drunk at the end.
Road trips are best when…
Depends. Am i driving? Then alone. i don’t like the distraction of having to participate in idle chatter.

@phendrick @pmarin @ybmuG
Another reason not to get a Tesla.
(Apologies, my personal grump for today)

@Star2236 Concur on “3 is too many”. In my experience, two can usually hash out a mutually acceptable subdestination, but three rarely can.
