[Market Research] What’s the Most Overqualified Object in Your House?
0Somewhere in your home is an object that has way too much technology or capability for the job it does.
Maybe it’s a doorstop that weighs 10x more than it needs to weigh. Or a PC that’s 1000x more powerful than is needed for the Wordle/Meh/Facebook machine that it realistically is.
Something! Tell us about tit.

Probably my microwave. It is aspires to be a clock as well as a method to reheat leftovers or cook corn.
Close second is probably the bookshelf I built for my office. Besides being a bookshelf it also conceals a Murphy bed.
@chienfou That bookcase sounds really great! Useful for guests, I bet.
@Kyeh
Yes it is. Always surpised when I take them in there to go to bed…
@chienfou @Kyeh Do you have to take down all the books to use the bed? Or do the bookshelves swing out of the way?
@Kyeh @macromeh
They swing open. 2 doors that meet in the middle. I’d post pics but currently the room is a wreck as I’m trying to redo a bunch of files and have a file cabinet parked in front of it. Maybe I’ll take one anyway…
@Kyeh @macromeh

@chienfou @Kyeh @macromeh
When I downsized and moved into my condo I said that everything I bought or brought in from then on had to serve double duty. Something like your murphy bed would have been on the list had I had another bedroom.

Very nice! Even nicer that YOU made it!
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @macromeh

Thanks.
The dummy books in the Murphy bed were discards from the local library. I ran them thru the table saw to cut the pages off and keep them looking like real books.
This is the (matching) bookshelf across the room which would be at the foot of the Murphy when it’s deployed. This is a real bookshelf with actual books and cabinets with space in them.
@chienfou @Kyeh @Lynnerizer My wife (the librarian nerd) looked at the photo of the fake facade and her first comment was “Looks like the discards were all Reader’s Digest condensed books!”.
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @macromeh
That’s the ONLY way they would end up in our house!
@chienfou @Lynnerizer @macromeh
OH! I love that so much!!!
And a great use of the Reader’s Digest condensed books; they do have attractive bindings.
My coffee pot of course.
It makes five different sizes of coffee from a single serving to a pot, and it makes them three different ways. I use one setting and two sizes. And one of those is not even an official size.
@Cerridwyn

Unfortunately it had to be returned, it was defective.
I forget why I didn’t get a replacement, probably something to do with my level of frustration.

That sounds like the Ninja coffee maker that I was SO EXCITED to get!
My urban assault mountain bike. If I had a bike like it when I was 18 maybe I could ride near the limit but now is a total nope.
My Nintendo Switch charger. It will charge anything in the house. Comes in clutch way to much.
@Wollyhop ahha, yes…the Switch charger is the last remaining cord in my house and it does everything perfectly.
@jouest @Wollyhop
Please tell me what makes it so special, how is it different or better and what else do you use it for?
@Lynnerizer The plug base (The doodad that you insert into computer hole) is a very common one, plus has better energy charging capabilities than, say, a regular cord.
@Wollyhop

Oh, okay thanks!
My cell phone. I use it for phone and messages. It gives me weather and Amber alerts whether I want them or not. I don’t use much else, but it keeps nagging me about them. “I have AI! Wanna use AI?” NO! Just phone and messages. “Wanna use a music app? I have iHeart and Spotify and .” Not today. “NEWS! Would you like news updates?” Nope. “Did you know that I can be a WIFI hotspot?” I knew that. “Want instructions on using the camera?” I know how to use the camera. “Watch a video?” Nope.
So why don’t I just get a dumb phone that does calls and text? Because they all require a service plan (usually 4G) that costs 2-3 times what I pay now for the 5G smartphone service.
@rockblossom but you need to know to keep an eye out for a blue Jeep Wrangler two towns over and also it might rain soon!
@rockblossom I had to disable Amber alerts since it ignores my Do Not Disturb settings.
@yakkoTDI I’ve gotten 3 AM Amber alerts for a spot 2 states away. Right up there with weather alerts for a storm that just passed me 5 minutes ago.
@rockblossom I’ve managed to block almost everything - the AI suggestions, the alerts, ads… Mostly disabling each service one at a time and then looping the rest through a fake network localized to only the phone itself.
The result is a fairly clean experience (locally with my own games/books/videos/calls), but the caveat is I have to turn off the fake network if I want to check my mail (because they still need to use ads and stuff) and I can’t turn off my phone or else I have to re-disable the assistant services one by one again.
@pakopako All of my incoming calls and texts are routed through Truecaller, and it works well. I can’t remember the last time I got a spam call that wasn’t blocked. Alerts come in separately, and I could block them, but I might want one of those alerts every now and again, so I don’t. I’m not that bothered by the occasional “helpful” suggestion, and they are easy to delete.
@pakopako @rockblossom I will add that I carefully cut out the connector button on the side of the phone case for the button that wakes up the malevolently helpy genie misfeature, whatever it was called on the Samsung S9 that preceded my Pixel 7 Pro. This eliminated the never-wanted summoning of that particular annoyance. The Pixel lacks such a button, and I try to avoid poking the sleeping menace otherwise.
The microwave oven. It has a profusion of fancy programmable features and settings, but I mostly use it to heat water for my morning coffee (one cup at a time, for my Aeropress
) and warm leftovers.
@macromeh
It still weirds me out to see a microwave that works like a regular oven with a metal shelf in it!
@macromeh The popcorn button on mine is handy, but I mostly use it to reheat food. Yet I wouldn’t want to live without it.
@lisagd22 I don’t like/eat popcorn (I know - weird, right?
) but my wife occasionally makes some in the microwave and she seems to enjoy the result.
I’ll be snide and say myself.
But really, it’s probably just the phone. Maybe the DVR that used to be a PC.
Or my Nintendo DS that functions as a TV remote.
That multipurpose air fryer/pressure cooker too…
I’m pretty sure I’m at fault here.
@blaineg I think this wins the thread by a mile!
️
About what?
@blaineg

@blaineg oof
The Shark robot vacuum/mop thing I bought at the last mehathon. I only use the vacuum feature.
I use the Shark hydrovac I bought on meh to simultaneously vacuum and mop.
@kittykat9180
maybe, if you’ve a cat, & treats, then maybe you could use treats to encourage the cat to ride around on the vacuum/ mop… it might work better if you secure a box atop the vacuum/ mop, place treats & maybe catnip inside the box, maybe even a blanket between the box & the treats & catnip & then let the cat know that the vacuum/ mop is available for rides… or, if you’ve a turtle
, I think that a turtle could work in place of a cat, though you might need different treats & i don’t even know if there’s a turtle equivalent substitute for catnip as in relation to a cat. But you could put cute sweaters on the turtle
, even make a soft & fluffy sweater, like a cat
, or could put an outfit on the cat
to resemble a turtle
, or even, if you’ve neither a cat
nor a turtle
, then you could make a kind of sweater toupee for the vacuum/ mop, so it could be soft & fluffy like a cat
or a more turtle shell like cover so it could look more like a turtle
. Oh, then, if you don’t have a furbaby or a furless furbaby, then your vacuum/ mop could also totally fill in as a “pet” - then, depending on your environment, if there’s a hallway or a porch or a flat surface outside your door or nearby, then you could even probably secure a leash to your vacuum/ mop & take it out and walk it, like you’d walk a cat, pokily meandering around, & giving you a fun-ish excuse to exercise…
@gnoogie no pets but I do sometimes talk to Freddy (the vacuum/mop) when I’m confused about what he’s doing. Like the other day I found him vacuuming under the bed in a room he’s not mapped for. I said “what are you doing in here, Fred?”
Sadly, I could say myself & it’d be true. Due to wounds, falls on cement, torn tendons/ muscle tears, psoriatic arthritis & other autoimmune challenges, injuries, breaks, strains, sprains, etc., I’m not able to physically do MANY things that my mind would like to be able to do. I’m trained in troubleshooting, things like COMM for voice & data links, ground & satellite, also operations & maintenance, encryption, SATCOM, etc., & I’ve certs & qualifications & experience, to boot. But my fingers are kinda f’d up at the moment, many torn tendons, some torn during the pt
I can’t kneel, as my knees need replacing, well, if I could stand, but I am relearning to stand as I’m not able to stand after being sent to a place, after surgical debridement of my legs & feet, where I could walk upon getting here, but was sent to get stronger & better in walking, but, instead, blah, blah, blah, yeah, they broke me & now I can’t even stand without extreme pain & instability. Like, seriously, if I point to “that there,” they’ve no idea to where or to what I’m pointing, as my fingers on each hand aren’t even pointing in the same directions

Thus, I’d say me… p.s. so, the first real at work voice check to make sure a voice link was working as it was supposed to work, I plugged a handset into a patch panel (like Lily Tomlin doing her phone operator bit, & if you don’t know what that is, then google it), &, anyway, giggling the whole time, I checked with an orbiting shuttle to verify that that voice link was in operational order, 5x5, & the guys working around me, well, they all had that look, the one saying
, a teenage girl
…
/showme Lily Tomlin doing her phone operator bit, except there’s an orbiting shuttle involved
@gnoogie

My goodness, you’ve been through it!
Good luck with your healing journey and relief from your pain. As you continue to get stronger be well and go slow!

My facepiece
I’ve got a Geiger counter
@capnjb What’s the count so far?
@macromeh Low
I will say that it is slightly disconcerting when you hear it click. But it would probably sound the same in your house. There is radiation everywhere. Just not at unhealthy levels
@capnjb @macromeh I got one after the Fukushima event of about 10 years ago. We knew there was radiation making its way to the West Coast where I was. Several universities and other sites had radiation samplers you could access online, but strangely a lot of those sites were offline in the days and weeks following Fukushima. So what do you trust?
I did confirm that those packs of dried seaweed are mildly more radioactive than background, which apparently is expected. Have not had it with me lately to test shrimp. But you should be using coastal U.S. shrimp anyway!
@capnjb @macromeh @pmarin
The Unstoppable March of Time is here to remind you it was over 14 years ago.
@capnjb @macromeh @yakkoTDI mere seconds compared to the half-life on that stuff I think.
For overqualified I would say my clothes dryer. It tries to be so smart, and actually does a good job no matter what (so why am I complaining?). But sometimes I like to change things, like use warm instead of hot. But I can’t for the mode I picked — the choices get locked-out! Because it thinks it knows best… it probably does.
@pmarin shhhhh trust the robot
