[Personal Betrayal] Would Your Family Ever??
7Came home to find this crappy no-name floating speaker on my kitchen counter, like this household isn’t even in the crappy no-name floating speaker business!!
Have you ever witnessed a similar betrayal in your household? And no, eldest daughter, all of the aloe-scented hand sanitizer in the world will not erase the stink of Five Below from your skin, nor your soul.

I’ll start with a confession, though.
Was raised in a car dealership family. Car dealerships kept food on the table for decades. I was first in line when Carvana became a thing. I don’t care if he is my Uncle Jerry, I’m not spending 2/3 of my Saturday arguing with him over the price of a Honda.
@jouest Maybe one day I’ll learn what it’s like to deal with a dealer – though knowing me, that dealer would probably be the junkyard.
My current daily was sold as dead and needing the high voltage hybrid battery replaced. That was nearly 30k miles ago and it’s still on that original. If only they looked for a fix (via an 8-minute YouTube video) or read the owner’s manual on how to boost it …
Also I can’t fathom the car payments of recent times:
@jouest @narfcake Pickup trucks with a base sticker price of $60K just baffle me.
@jouest @narfcake @werehatrack $80K with options… probably 100 now.
@jouest @narfcake will never do that again. Unfortunately might leave me stuck driving Teslas unless I am convinced another dealer will not pull that standard %^U$#. Picture clicking the Buy button on this site, except for a car. Provide some license/insurance info. Oh, and bank account. Get pickup date or have delivered.
Can I buy extra charging cable kit? No, just order that online. Can I buy floor mats? No, just order that online.
@jouest @narfcake @pmarin The Sam’s Club and Costco car buying programs have been hassle free for me. Though that was 1992 and 2004. Still have both.
You tell them you will give them a lot of no name trackrs so they don’t lose that no name non-meh sold speaker.
@Kidsandliz shhh stocking stuffers!
Nope. When my daughter wish I had to still live at home her money was her money and she spent it on what she wanted. She was given a weekly sum of money that included lunches and allowance and she was required to eat but other than that she could buy whatever she wanted with it. And I didn’t care. It taught her enough of the value of money that when her semi-clunker car died while she was in school to become a veterinarian, she managed to negotiate and finance a brand new car that she is still driving 20 years later. She was putting money in an IRA if she didn’t spend all of the money that she got for her loans. So I figured I did it right. When during the pandemic they wave student loan payments, she jumped hers at the highest interest payment account she could find. Figuring if they asked for it later she’d have it and will made some money off of it and hadn’t spent it. I’m more of a spendthrift if I wanted I buy it but I think that’s what comes from being comfortable at this stage of your life
UPDATE: this garbage came from Target. Back off, Target. Stay in your lane.
@jouest in today’s climate that’s worse. Target is across the street I haven’t gone into it since it decided that it was going to screw everybody who supported it for many years
@Cerridwyn @jouest Target used to be a go-to. Now it’s a drive-past.
I find myself buying a lot less stuff in general these days. Use it up, wear it out, make it do.
@jouest @werehatrack exactly. As much as I hit Wally World politics at least they’re consistent. Not that I want to go there either but now at a choice it would be a crap shoot
@Cerridwyn @jouest @werehatrack didn’t Wally use to sell guns and ammo? I think they still do in some locations… so you can get fully-armed before risking going back out to the parking lot.
Staying home, thank you.
@Cerridwyn @jouest @pmarin @werehatrack I haven’t looked recently, but guns & ammo were at the semi-local Wallys. (Wild West Utah.)
@blaineg @Cerridwyn @jouest @pmarin Limited guns and ammo at Wally here in urban Houston. If you really want big-box mayhem service, the destination is Academy Sports & Outdoors. If you want it with “atmosphere”, then Bass Pro. If you want personalized service, we’ve got tons of G&A specialty stores as well. They aren’t as numerous as Shipley Donuts, but some of them reportedly have better coffee.
@blaineg @Cerridwyn @jouest @pmarin @werehatrack Guns and ammo in Wally World here too. Of course we have had shootings in that particular parking lot in the past too. But then again this city is the murder capital of the USA so why am I not surprised.
In fact the parking lot of where I live has had two incidents of people shooting off guns in the parking lot in the last 3 years. One time I was in the parking lot when it happened (hid between parked cars). Then when I came home later that night someone was trying to break into the car two cars from my then assigned parking spot (other crime in the parking lot too but none in the last year that I know of).
@blaineg @Cerridwyn @jouest @pmarin @werehatrack I’m not a fan of the store but I do go there for fishing gear and ammo. I’ve probably bought several thousand rounds there. Don’t think they carry long guns anymore, but they do have big boxes of 12 gauge shells at good prices. Cheaper than the range.
How can you not take that lovely piece of crap out of the box and show it to us? And blow it up of course.
@Fuzzalini on it. I expect underwhelm.
@Fuzzalini it sucks. and not in a charming Meh way.
@Fuzzalini
also sucks inflated.
@jouest Looks like it will easily fall over.
It does kinda look like something Meh would sell for $5 during a Mehrathon and then only have 3 in stock.
@Fuzzalini @jouest It looks both too cheesy and not amusing enough for McPhee. That’s just sadness in a crummy box.
@Fuzzalini @werehatrack the box seems intentionally crummy. I feel disingenuously infringed upon.
@jouest @werehatrack

@Fuzzalini next 'thon might include this one, refurbished, exactly one in stock.
@Fuzzalini @jouest I’d suggest if that is the case that you carefully choose who will get it and include a note to they appreciate the, um, sacrifice.
