The “automatic” trans in those was actually a manual gearbox witth a computer-controlled clutch and shifter. It changed gears about as accurately as a 15-year-old ex-karting boy who was still learning how to make use of multiple ratios.
@werehatrack They weren’t called Powershift Powershit for nothing! While pretty much all the other manufacturers used a wet clutch in their DCT, Ford used a dry clutch and programming that allows it to wear itself out slip for smoother takeoff and shifting.
Then there were the versions that had a 1.0L with a wet timing belt. Yes, the rubber timing belt is soaked in oil. That didn’t help in the reliability department either.
There’s a reason why so many of those cars have been junked.
The good news is that ones equipped with a manual transmission were decent vehicles. Alas, most Americans didn’t buy the manual version …
The same applies to older Nissan vehicles with a manual instead of their Continously Variable Transmission Crappy Vile Transmission. It doesn’t erase the stigma of r/nissandrivers but at least it’ll have a much better chance of surviving 60k miles without a replacement.
Top Gear got a complaint they don’t test ordinary cars.
So they did.

@narfcake And not just any old dry clutch, it was a dual-disc design that required a special fixture to remove and reinstall the assembly.
@werehatrack Yep.
