SillyHeathen, what have you done?
12So another unexpected box arrived today.
It seems @sillyheathen didn’t adhere to the 7th rule of the Secret-Not-So-Secret coffee club. So I will remind you all…
The 7th rule of the Secret-Not-So-Secret coffee club is that reciprocity is frowned upon.
But it was a lovely box and it made me smile. It had my favorite sweets (Salty licorice and Haribo Cola gummies) and a freaking Rod Stewart cassette tape It also contained three freshly picked pairs from her property along with a mug that is undeniably @sillyheathen. Thank you SillyHeathen, completely unnecessary, but did make me smile
I’m having candy for dinner
And those pears are beautiful… I wish I had a proper fruit tree.
Thank you so much You shouldn’t have…

I wanted to put this sucker in but it wouldn’t fit.
@sillyheathen You grew that?!? That’s phenomenal! I bought a half-case of Colorado western slope peaches and some of them were gigantic.
@Kyeh @sillyheathen
Dahmn
@Kyeh that is massive! And yeah a few of the danjou are enormous this year. My quince should almost be ready when I get back from Hawaii and I’m super excited!
@sillyheathen I hope you have a fabulous time in Hawaii!

@Kyeh OMG!
I hope that’s as delicious as it is HUGE!

I’ve been on a blueberry kick lately and we got some jumbo ones that were as big as a quarter! We stopped buying them a few weeks ago when they started getting a little too tart and they were hard, and at almost $9 for 9oz need I say more?
When they were good they were amazing though!
@sillyheathen I never heard of quince fruit. (I’m feeling like this is a deja vu moment so maybe this came up previously, with another years harvest, and I just don’t remember.
) Google tells me it’s extremely hard and acidic, nearly inedible raw but becomes sweet and luscious when cooked. They say it’s good cooked with meat like pork, used in apple pies, and in jams and jelly. How do you use it?
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer in all the ways! I make membrillo or quince paste which is traditionally served on cheese plates, best dessert ever. And yes they’re almost inedible raw. They are loaded with pectin. I love using them to accentuate pie fillings, jams or tarts. They simply sing when they’re paired with pear, apples and a few other fruits. I also make a liquor with it. I added some when I got to the braising portion of my ribs recently. I then added that braising liquid to a bbq sauce I made that I glazed the ribs with. So many people remarked at how delicious and slightly fruity the sauce was. It’s an extremely versatile fruit! I’ll see if I can find a photo of one from last year.
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer
Foods dat start wit da letta Q!
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen
have you had peachy blueberries?
yes, they are a thing, and yes, they taste of peaches and have the mouthfeel of blueberries and i am obsessed.
@Kyeh @sillyheathen
Actually, everything that you mentioned does! My mouths watering! YUM!

That barbeque sauce sounds amazing!
Your friends and family must LOVE getting a dinner invite to your house!
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @sillyheathen

This is the very first time I’m hearing about peachy blueberries! They sound delicious, something I’ve now got to track down!
That’s ALL I need, a new obsession! NOT!
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen I think it must places you need a slightly upscale Supermarket to get them. They’re in California is Sprouts. I’m not sure about other places.
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen fruit and barbecue sauce is amazing. I ran across a company that’s based somewhere on the East Coast that does a whole slew of fruit barbecue sauces which are interesting inspiration. It started with me during Apple Butter Festival of an Oak Glen when I found apple butter barbecue sauce which I had to buy one and try and it was pretty damn good. When I Googled the company they make peach and blueberry and blackberry and I forget all like 15 different varieties or something. This was pretty covid so I don’t know if they’re still around or not
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @sillyheathen

I’ll see what I can find, shouldn’t be hard to research that. And I love apple butter, my mom always made it when I was little.
Thanks!
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen
Yes it is. There is a barbecue place in Tampa that makes their own fruit BBQ sauces. They have apple, guava and mango.
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @sillyheathen @yakkoTDI

Jeez what have I been missing out on my ENTIRE life…
Lol
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer if you come to my house, I’m feeding you. And probably sending you home with art in some shape or form.
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI I mean the base for most BBQ sauces is a tomato derivative and that’s a fruit so it’s in keeping. I love making seasonal fodder because then the produce that you’re incorporating is going to be at its finest. Some people think I’m a snob because I grow all kinds of crazy things but it’s just because I’m an artist full stop. I love making cool delicious food and the easiest and most affordable away to achieve that for me, is to grow as much as possible.
@Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen I’ve found most of the more unusual good fruit that I’ve had recently at Sprouts. They had yummy plumcots this year, and they were the first store here that had cotton candy grapes.
@Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer
@sillyheathen I think we need to make a traveling Meh food trip, starting at sillyheathen’s place, then swinging down to @chienfou’s, then up to @capnjb’s … maybe stops at cerridwynn’s and @ItalianScallion’s for coffee?
@Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen agreed. Although I have found some pretty awesome stuff at my local farmers market that’s kind of hit and miss. Only a few of them try to grow specialty stuff down here. But I was up on the Central Coast we had so much of it. And I loved it. That’s the only thing I miss. But Sprouts is where I got the peachy blueberries I took that by my produce there when I don’t care at the farmers market with a few exceptions.
MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
@Cerridwyn @chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen Well, I just started the smoker, so hurry the F up
Also, we don’t want the coffee to get cold
But if you are late it will get me time to catch some Maryland blue crabs
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh @sillyheathen
My mom raised no fool, I’ll be purposely late, waiting for those crabs!

@capnjb @Cerridwyn @ItalianScallion @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen
I can hear it now… Hey y’all I got crabs from capjb!!

@capnjb @Cerridwyn @chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh @sillyheathen
And, I forgot how much I love Kramer!
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen @yakkoTDI
Your pears look amazing. I’m planning to go pick some soon.
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @chienfou @ItalianScallion @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @sillyheathen
https://wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/invasive/carcinus-maenas
Please eat more of these crabs (they’re an invasive species)
Forgot to mention, I love this weird place
And there will be NO Secret-Not-So-Secret crab club
/giphy The more you know

@capnjb I wish I could be part of the blue crab club. Stoopid allergy.
I’ve heard that they all have reasonable coffee
Sorry… it’s week one of the NFL and I might be a bit tipsy
@capnjb Hey, I’ll invite everyone to Texas during State Fair of Texas season. Since I’m not working in an office anymore, I don’t enter as many contests because there’s no place to take leftovers. I do plan to take some to my mom’s new apartment though. I owe her caregivers some treats for what they are putting up with.
@capnjb @ironcheftoni Ooo, yes - add a stop at the prize-winning ironcheftoni’s place, @Lynnerizer! Anyone else willing to feed us or give us drinks?

@yakkoTDI, will you make us some spicy chili?
@capnjb @ironcheftoni @Kyeh @Lynnerizer I can handle that.
@capnjb @ironcheftoni @Kyeh @yakkoTDI
Yup, I’m down too! Or up for it!
@capnjb @ironcheftoni @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI It would be my pleasure to host you guys for coffee. After taking so many cooking classes at the nearby culinary school, I’ll pick out a couple of things to make to go with the espresso drinks. Croissants come to mind, for one…
@capnjb @ironcheftoni @ItalianScallion @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI I recall you being pretty innovative with bacon, as well …
@capnjb @ironcheftoni @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI Hmmm… croissants filled with bacon jam?
I think we need a food and coffee exchange, LOL, save the dark roast guys would end up with light roast and the light roast lovers would end up with oily dark shit (sorry dark roast lovers)
@Cerridwyn

I don’t think the coffee will give them “oily dark shit”…
@Cerridwyn
Well, I can cover at least half of that objective
I’m still trying to figure out how to send @Lynnerizer a meal
@capnjb @Cerridwyn
And it’s ONLY 6:24 am! Lol
There you go making my mouth water again!
@Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer And oddly enough, 6:24 is my birthday
edit - Well, not the time, but June 24th
@capnjb @Cerridwyn
Who does such a thing and doesn’t just round off the time is the one that comes to mind as I think back, but there where several!
Now, I see there was good reason!

Ha! These are the times when I say I don’t believe in coincidences, there’s some kind of ‘thing’ happening that’s bigger than both of us.
Although fleeting, you have no idea all of the silly thoughts that went through my mind as I was writing that…
No coincidences!
@Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer Random is good
@Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer I’m starting to think that @capnjb’s username really stands for CAffeinePushiN’ jb …
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh
Lol

I think you might be on to something…
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer The first bag is free

@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer There is a long back story to my username. But long story, short… JB are my initials (you probably have already figured that one out) and the Capn part, well… 100% tied to Capn Crunch. And that was from the 90’s and video games. That’s a much longer story to how I landed there
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer

So you say …
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer
I know I e mentioned this before to some of you but I’ve thought about doing a exchange that was featured around hometown stuff, like local food, wine, liquor that your area is known for. It’s just so hard to ship produce.
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @Star2236 I can ship Old Bay anywhere
edit - and for what it’s worth, do not ship wine or alcohol through USPS. It is very much frowned upon by the people that can arrest you
Send it through UPS and if they ask you what is in the box, just gifts
When I was really into brewing I was active on a forum that did beer exchanges… when I’d send them and UPS would ask me about the contents, I’d just say… yeast samples
@capnjb @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @Star2236
we kinda don’t grow citrus anymore. urbanization or some shit.
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh

Ha, Cap’n Crunch was my dad’s favorite cereal when I was a kid. Pretty sure he moved on to more healthy varieties as time went on.
I wasn’t aware of the video game though.
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer @Star2236
I have a kiddo that works at UPS. She says whenever someone tells her they’re shipping alcohol she informs them she can’t ship it.
… but then if she likes the customer she tells them (but if you go to another UPS store and they ask, just tell them you’re shipping glass bottles and they won’t stop you).
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer Heh, there was no Capn Crunch video game that I am aware of… but there is a correlation that I will explain someday when I feel like using all the words
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh
Well here’s a link, listen to the first minute or two, I believe it came out in 1999.
https://share.google/MyvfVGD5LKmd0AeAv
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer Hah! I never knew
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer The Cap’n Crunch reference isn’t to this?
One Of The Earliest Hacks* Was Performed Using A Cap’n Crunch Whistle Toy
*Note the correct use of the term “hack.”
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Lynnerizer
@ItalianScallion–were you one of those kids with a whistle?
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @ItalianScallion @Kyeh

@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer
Oh I know it’s illegal to ship alcohol, I just leave that part out of the shipping context.
@capnjb @Cerridwyn @Kyeh @Lynnerizer
I don’t remember having one, but I do remember trying to do a whistle myself sweeping through frequencies and hoping I’d hit the right one long enough to trigger the system. I don’t remember it working.
I somehow ended up with an audio oscillator, but I don’t remember that working either. I have may been too late on trying this and the phone company had already closed that hole in their system.
Well I just picked these off a tree at the house we’re staying at. I’d mail them but Hawaii is weird about the whole fruit/plant thing.
@sillyheathen So you killed a Sleestak?

@capnjb I’m pretty sure there’s a potential portal to the center of the earth somewhere on this island, so it’s possible!
@capnjb @sillyheathen Are those edible? I want to see the inside, please.
@capnjb @Kyeh @sillyheathen And the other question is what are they.
@capnjb @Kidsandliz @sillyheathen I couldn’t resist and asked google - it says they’re breadfruit.
@capnjb @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @sillyheathen
Yes… Breadfruit (which can sometimes get very large and make giant dents in your car if they fall on it!)
Edible: yes
See a good bit in the Caribbean as well…
@sillyheathen
BTW which island are you on?
@capnjb @chienfou @Kidsandliz @Kyeh

Aloha from Kauai
@capnjb @chienfou @Kidsandliz @sillyheathen Woowwwww!!!

🩵

I see a heart in the middle if that sunset!
@capnjb @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @sillyheathen
We loved Kauai when we went 20 years ago.
Make sure you get to at least one farmer’s market!
@capnjb @chienfou @Kidsandliz @Kyeh oh I’ve been going to the markets everyday!
We hit a culinary one today and got the most amazing fruit and produce! Then snorkeled at baby beach. I found some teaching and want to see if I can harvest one to eat. Also saw two turtles.
@capnjb @chienfou @Kidsandliz @Kyeh
We went tubing through an old sugar cane flume. It goes down the mountain through tunnels and was fantastic!
@capnjb @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @sillyheathen
That’s VERY cool (figuratively and literally)
The markets were amazing. The shear variety of even something as simple as bananas was remarkable. Apple bananas were definitely very interesting. And OMFG… the flowers… Wow!
I’ve tried and tried but cannot for the life of me figure out what this might mean !
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway enjoy your stay. I would go back in a heartbeat.
@capnjb @chienfou @Kidsandliz @Kyeh it’s was supposed to say urchin.
@sillyheathen
Ahhh. THAT makes much more sense!
Wow! How awes0me
@capnjb
Way to fuck with the 'bot!
@chienfou Yeah, that was awesome, huh?
MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
@mediocrebot Fucker
@capnjb @mediocrebot Hey now…
you’re an all-star
