These companies have some serious Kahuna’s in the fact that they have the nerve to send an update to a customers purchased AND owned device, killing it so it will no longer work and must go into a landfill hoping the customer purchase a newer device
@Alereon My speakers connect with RCA cables and I’m dreading the day they finally blow and I’m no longer able to find a similar replacement for them. By then, speakers will require a subscription fee to use them too.
@Alereon@dahobbs9 Sonos is actually really good about continuing support. I’m currently using some 20+ year old Connect Amps from my dad after he upgraded. They split it off into S1 legacy app and the current app for modern hardware, but honestly impressive they didn’t just brick the old ones.
@Alereon Sonos has never remote bricked any product without an explicit request to do so from the owner.
If you have old equipment you can claim a discount toward purchase of newer equipment once per device. When that program first rolled out, in order to take advantage you had to voluntarily brick the device you were ‘trading in’. That requirement lasted maybe three months; If you claim the discount on any older gear today, that device will keep on working. You can sell it to someone else, and they can add it to their system and use it normally. Sonos just records that the credit has been claimed for that serial number so it can’t be claimed again. These being ‘certified renewed’, the credit may or may not be available for them on a per-unit basis.
There are some devices that haven’t gotten updates in a long time and can’t be used with their new app. They’re in no way rendered unusable, but you do have to pay attention to compatibility as there are some combinations of very old and very new devices that simply cannot be made to play together.
I’ll stick with my overpriced but amazing (and paid-for) Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio. (I’ve had it a while, I don’t know which numeric model it is, but it resembles a 6.)
@werehatrack I had one of those. Yeah, it’s a fabulous speaker! I got a Bose Soundlink Revolve II after that which is smaller around than this Sonos one and, of course, its sound is fabulous too. (I got it with credit card points. Yes!)
@dahobbs9 Sonos has never been cheap, but its one of the most respected brands for an easy, movable solution to whole-home networked audio (compared to permanent ceiling speakers)
I just scored a Sonos Ray soundbar from a thrift shop this weekend. It sounds terrific. But I think the Sonos ecosystem might be too rich for my blood, even with this objectively good deal.
These sound pretty good, and the price is good, but they don’t bring anything to the table that would make them a worthwhile upgrade from my Play:1 surrounds. If I had another couple rooms I needed to cover I’d jump on them.
A note about Siri ‘support’: You can control these to some extent with Siri by adding them to your Home and then issuing commands to your phone or watch or whatever. The SL version doesn’t have a mic at all, but even the non-SL version with the internal mic can’t do standalone Siri interactions like a HomePod could.
AirPlay support works really well, and in my opinion offers a better user experience than a HomePod. I have had problems with audio sync when trying to AirPlay to a combination of Sonos speakers and HomePods, but it’s been a while since I bothered trying so take that with a grain of salt.
For anyone using ancient Sonos equipment, hoping meh found a cache of speakers that work on the S1 app:
For everyone else: They’re pricy, sure but Sonos sound great, especially for the size. More of a transparent highmid forward tuning. My parents have had a whole house setup since the early 2000s. The app is solid. You can link in just about any music/radio streamer. Unlike google home products, they just work every time you pair rooms.
It’s only one gen behind the current Era 100. These could be the surrounds for a sonos soundbar tv setup, or standalone, or a stereo pair. This is easily $30 less than I’ve seen them as a refurb on their site.
Keep in mind you’ll have to use a different Sonos speaker or the inexplicably way more expensive Port to have RCA inputs so you can connect some of your old-timey tech.
@shiranissosexy yes but that use case is not the target for Sonos products. I have these at many customer locations (I fix tech problems), and I find that the market for these is the “I want speakers wherever I want them and I want them to sound good and I want them to play what’s on my streaming device” crowd. Generally those folks have either recycled their old audio tech or never owned any to begin with. They also tend to have money to spend on things like Sonos.
I really used to like my Sonos speaker, then they made a dumb update that broke everything and forced people either to use a terrible app that destroyed many of the features that I used daily, or, use old vulnerable software. They went from being nice speakers to being bookends overnight. Can’t say I’m surprised that they are discount now.
@allthatisjosh Right. I had stereo sets in every room, (mix of these and Play:one) and lost access to my music for weeks before I was able to jerry-rig my Mac library to be seen as a NAS. Even with that, they kept cutting out. Airplay set off some weird things with stereo for some of my music that had been ripped from CDs.
Even though things seem to be working now, I don’t have much interest in risking further investment in their products. I switched to HomePods, which are more reliable. Still use a Roam for Bluetooth with Naturespace (remember when that could be connected to a wifi speaker?), and can confirm sync issues between Sonos and HomePod.
That said, the price of these is good enough for someone to jump into wifi speakers, and AirPlay works if the app stops working again. And the speakers were great while the app worked.
@capnjb@chienfou@jouest or are they all the same Josh? Maybe mediocrebot got bored and is trying to convince us how human they are by pretending to be multiple Joshes…
@hyppo not made anymore is not the same as not supported anymore, though. Once the bricking I had originally heard about was explained above, it sounds like Sonos is doing a very reasonable job of keeping their older equipment functional after they have moved on - much better than some other companies (RIP Wink)
I’ve decided to make a trip back by the thrift store if I can shake free in a bit and see if the person that donated their Ray also donated a pair of these and they just weren’t processed yet
I own 4 of these throughout my house…great speakers. It’s really nice to be able to use the Sonos app to have music play everywhere in my house over WiFi without getting random other sounds coming from my phone.
I am (was) really torn between wanting to snag one of these as an excuse to try out the Home Assistant integration, and thinking I could put together something almost as good with off-the-shelf or open-source stuff.
The older I get, the higher value I place on my own time, so probably the former (if I really luck out).
@xobzoo
She explained elsewhere - it’s an alert she set up for Casemates, because they set aside a certain number of bottles for the delayed delivery option (“Summer Hold”), and if those sell out she can transfer more from the regular supply. But the prompt evidently can’t be turned off in Meh.
@Kyeh@nickelstar@user76156310 Thanks. I’ve got a support ticket open but so far they haven’t been helpful. First they issued a return shipping label assuming I want to return it. When I clarified that I want to keep it but the power cable is missing, they said it doesn’t come with any “accessories”.
Would you call something as essential as a power cable an “accessory”?
I’ve had such great experiences with meh so far but this is pretty incredible.

Is this in stereo?
@yakkoTDI It says pair two of them together for stereo sound, so one alone is probably not stereo.
So this means they are only a few months away from being remote-bricked by Sonos, aye?
@Alereon oooooooh I forgot about that!

@dahobbs9 cojones, too
@Alereon @dahobbs9 I don’t think that actually happened, except by agreement when customers wanted to trade it in for a newer model.
Rather than requiring the return of the old one, they just disabled the specific device.
@Alereon @dahobbs9 @highonpez Wasn’t there a company that did that a few years back though?
“AI” Garbage.
<yawn>
@DrunkCat It does kind of look like a trash can…

@werehatrack I have the same one (I think also the 6) and it’s an outstanding speaker.
@werehatrack ahhh a man of culture. Were you also able to pick up for 99? I’m waiting for a deal on a mid size speaker for 99ish

I give. how do I link an image again? /sigh Tried ![][] too.
@stinks Actually, it’s better to download the image to your computer and use the link shown in the image below to upload it!
I’ll do it for you too!
@stinks
$100 !! and you have to buy TWO just to get Stereo sound
@dahobbs9 Sonos has never been cheap, but its one of the most respected brands for an easy, movable solution to whole-home networked audio (compared to permanent ceiling speakers)
Hats off to the copywriter for going the extra mile today!
Also: the movie reference is High Fidelity.
Also also: “Gail Forsewhinds” is funny.
@UncleVinny You win finding all the stuff today!
@dave @UncleVinny
Who is this?
The Beta Band.
They’re good.
I know.
@andymand @dave @UncleVinny They’re on a reunion tour this year too.
So No’s will more than likely outnumber the Yes’s today. That’s my prediction at least!

@MrGoodGuy Is that like the Chevy No Va?
I just scored a Sonos Ray soundbar from a thrift shop this weekend. It sounds terrific. But I think the Sonos ecosystem might be too rich for my blood, even with this objectively good deal.
@djslack You must have a really great thrift store!
These sound pretty good, and the price is good, but they don’t bring anything to the table that would make them a worthwhile upgrade from my Play:1 surrounds. If I had another couple rooms I needed to cover I’d jump on them.

@highonpez Looks like they’ve been most recently $160.

Dammit.
OK, the little table from a trunk of wood is very sweet. How do I get that? (while being a poor)
Nothing will ever make “Margaritaville” sound even tolerable, much less great. Yeah, I said it.
@rickjennings64 most accurate statement since statement. “Heard to death” is probably my ailment.
Keep in mind you’ll have to use a different Sonos speaker or the inexplicably way more expensive Port to have RCA inputs so you can connect some of your old-timey tech.

Where’s the AI garbage guy?
This is the perfect time to state your case.
@threadstone scroll up.
@threadstone 3rd comment
@threadstone this isn’t even in the top five of AI garbage

@capnjb @jouest
Look… another Josh?
@allthatisjosh Right. I had stereo sets in every room, (mix of these and Play:one) and lost access to my music for weeks before I was able to jerry-rig my Mac library to be seen as a NAS. @chienfou @jouest It’s the Joshdemic
edit - There will soon be a movie called ‘Day J’

second edit - Maybe it will be Joshrassic Park
@capnjb @chienfou @jouest
@capnjb @chienfou @jouest or are they all the same Josh? Maybe mediocrebot got bored and is trying to convince us how human they are by pretending to be multiple Joshes…
@chienfou @jouest @sillyheathen What if they are actually all just Christophers but play a Josh on the interweb?
@capnjb @chienfou @jouest Christophers or Chrises?
Discontinued model. Big meh…
@hyppo not made anymore is not the same as not supported anymore, though. I wasn’t tempted until I got the feels from seeing the High Fidelity meh picture. Banger of a movie.
Congratulations on the impending sellout.
I’ve decided to make a trip back by the thrift store if I can shake free in a bit and see if the person that donated their Ray also donated a pair of these and they just weren’t processed yet

It looks like somebody was able to buy 65 of these. That would explain why they sold out so fast.

(
Yes, I know it’s 6 and 5 separately; but still weird that it’s 6 & 5 rather than 5 & 6.)
@thumperchick
Hey, @mediocrebot, what response triggers do you have hard-coded deep inside you?
What was it this time, “sold out”? Or “able to buy”? Maybe just “explain” or “weird”?
@thumperchick
@mediocrebot Sold out!
(sorry for spamming your notifications,
thumperchick
; I had to test/verify the trigger)@thumperchick
I wonder why mediocrebot thinks Thumperchick is a sell-out?
@xobzoo
She explained elsewhere - it’s an alert she set up for Casemates, because they set aside a certain number of bottles for the delayed delivery option (“Summer Hold”), and if those sell out she can transfer more from the regular supply. But the prompt evidently can’t be turned off in Meh.
@xobzoo It’s 'cause more people bought 6 units than people that bought 5 units
Well balls. I got distracted because I didn’t take my adderall this morning. But I guess at least I didn’t spend money?
@sillyheathen That’s the spirit!
I just got mine today. Sad. Meh forgot to include a power cable.
@nickelstar same.
@nickelstar Me too. Can we contact them? What do we do?
@jzisser9 @nickelstar @user76156310
Send an email to Support:

Sometimes it takes a day or two to get a response, but they’ve been good about fixing problems in my experience.
@Kyeh @nickelstar @user76156310 Thanks. I’ve got a support ticket open but so far they haven’t been helpful. First they issued a return shipping label assuming I want to return it. @jzisser9 @nickelstar @user76156310 @troy @Thumperchick Was this supposed to come with a power cable?
@jzisser9 @Kyeh @nickelstar @troy @user76156310
If yours did not come with a cable, please reach out to meh.com/support for help.
@jzisser9 @Kyeh @nickelstar @Thumperchick @troy
They refunded me $20 for the missing cable, a new one from Sonos is $25 on their website.
@jzisser9 @Kyeh @nickelstar @troy @user76156310 I just answered your customer support case.
Hi @Thumperchick, thanks for jumping in. I’ll await your response in my support ticket. Thank you!
