Problem with the south is that the humidity is so high that any rain that falls will create puddles in anything on the ground and then not evaporate for a couple of days. Things as simple as half a pecan shell or small pile if leaves will hold enough water to hatch out a crop of mosquitoes. The fact that you get frequent pop-up storms that last just a few minutes but are very intense at least a few times a week means there’s water standing in things in the yard almost all the time. It’s practically impossible to keep your yard free of anything that will collect water. Especially if you live in the country, have a large yard and/or a lot of flowers.
May just get this for the refills. Decent price for them. I have a different model, and it does help with mosquitoes, but in more like a 2-3ft radius. We’re in Florida though so that’s pretty good.
I found these effective as well. Minnesota isn’t Florida bad, but we still have lots of skeeters. Three refills for $30 is about the price the sketchy generic refills cost, close to half the price of the authentic ones.
@chienfou@seanmsavage Camping in MN was a disaster cone nightfall. You could hear the drone pick up as the sun set, pop into the tent as quickly as possible, and still have 20-50 of those things to kill before going to sleep.
@chienfou@seanmsavage@stinks I worked in MN taking people canoeing in the Boundary Waters and Quetico. If you walked while waving your arms in circles 100% of the time the odds of being bit by any of the assorted bugs (no seeums, mosquitoes, blackflies, etc.) was greatly reduced HOWEVER stop for just a second and you were doomed. I think they were worse there than when I took juvenile delinquents canoeing across the state of Florida in the summer.
The latest and greatest, I wonder just how effective it really is One comment said range was just a few feet And there’s No mention of exactly What the liquid repellent actually is this can we refill them
@dahobbs9
Any wind at all cuts into the effective “20-foot range” pretty quickly. If it’s calm and still out, maybe up to 20-feet. With any breeze, well, you’re blowing the repellent down the road.
You can buy refills, which as the review correctly notes, can get pricey. This item is a decent price just for the refills alone.
If you sell something that actually KILLS mosquitoes, and no-see-ums and horseflies and deerflies and yellowflies and ticks, I’ll be all in. Especially if there isn’t collateral damage to bugs that I like.
I sympathize with the desire to just be outside without acquiring myriad itching puncture wounds by making the bloodsuckers uninterested in you. But yeah, something in me just wants vengeance on skeeters, preferably with a body count during or at the end of exacting said vengeance.
Perhaps it’s a flaw in my personality, and maybe it bothers me more than it should, but, yeah, dead.
I see this stuff which reminds me that I live in a part of the world where mosquitoes are practically non-existent. I feel for you blood banks. I’ve experienced it and it literally sucks.
@goldnectar I’m constantly grateful that I’m a bit less than 2 miles from the ocean, and we have virtual no mosquitos. (My friends from the IL never believe me.)
Video review of an older model (2nd of three reviewed Thermacell products) should be functionally identical.
tl;dw: They work, with a few caveats, but are very expensive. Presenter suggests that old fashioned mosquito coils are at least as effective and significantly cheaper.
@Talidan not to mention inhaling that chemical isn’t the safest nor coating your skin with it. I wouldn’t put it near food either for the spray to land on food. Yes it is used in agriculture and is reasonably safe in that setting on crops but eating chemicals like this just increases your exposure which is not a good thing.
My wife uses these when she gardens sometimes if the wind is not too stiff. We also find these somewhat effective when we are at outdoor events where you can light one and put it on the ground under a table or chair, which helps to contain the vapors around your legs and cut down on the number of bites on your ankles.
I’ve always been a mosquito magnet. I get big showy welts, but they only itch for a brief time before they get numb.
I used to ignore them, but that was before tiger mosquitoes, West Nile, and Zika showed up.
My gardening is focused on attracting butterflies and bees, so I am reluctant to use anything airborne. I’ll just keep putting on repellant. I still get bitten when I go outside, but it’s four or five bites instead of twenty.

I need this but for gnats. My understanding that is that as long as you aren’t around still water, mosquitos don’t show up often.
@AaronLeeJohnson Crap, I’m 75% water.

@AaronLeeJohnson @dave Don’t stand still!
@AaronLeeJohnson @chienfou @dave
Now that’s a southern description.
@AaronLeeJohnson @dave @rpstrong
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What can I say…
@AaronLeeJohnson @dave
Perhaps if you replace that 75% with meh margaritas you won’t be bothered by mosquitoes?

@seanmsavage
Have to disagree about Minnesota’s mosquitoes. This was always our feeling when we lived up there.
Land of 10,000 lakes is a land of a billion mosquitoes

@chienfou @Kidsandliz @seanmsavage I can’t imagine worse than the Boundary Waters.
On the lakes, not so bad. Sun goes down, horrors.
You didn’t know a guide named Spaghetti Head did you?
@chienfou @seanmsavage @stinks No didn’t know any of the guides as we took students there as instructors.

This deal has me buzzing with excitement.

I’ll just let my pet frog eat all them nasty skeeters!!
@MrGoodGuy
His aim isn’t very good though
@chienfou @MrGoodGuy Shoot your tongue where the bug is going, not where it is.

Where are you? Many of us might want to relocate, as we’re tired of being drained dry. . .
@Christo196 @goldnectar pls reveal your location
@Christo196 @goldnectar @hillhi
Coastal SoCal, but pretty much anywhere that has a semi-constant ocean breeze will likely do.
“AI” Garbage.
@DrunkCat And the creativity just flows.

Not sure I’d want a pyrethroid diffuser while having so many cats…

The odd psychology of Meh - I wouldn’t have bought one, but I’m mildly pissed they’re already sold out.
@thumperchick
@Pufferfishy Exactly: I didn’t even get to consider it for 5 minutes before deciding, (again), no thanks!
Re Last photo. Coincidentally, I had no idea one of the main characters from Veep was the little girl in the My Girl movie until a few days ago.
@bugdave Was coming here to say she’s even better in Veep.

How are people buying in here when it’s been sold out for hours? Maybe the timestamps I’m seeing are off?
@thumperchick
@kknuutila Could have been a few left for VMP/Members that became available at 16:00 Eastern time.
