Interesting how they’re separated into little color/pattern groups - black cats together, striped cats together with an orange subset, solid gray alone.
We did have ten in the house at one point… But that’s because a feral cat showed up our back porch pregnant in 115F weather. She was semi -tame, obviously people had been feeding her. We managed to coax her in and fed her, she gave birth, slowly over time became more trusting of people. 4 kittens and her took us up to 10 cats for a while.
Gave the kittens away…spayed her. She eventually became a good pet but she was pretty wild in the beginning.
We were sad when we lost her a few months ago… But we just rescued an abandoned 5 week old kitten from under a dumpster outside a hibachi restaurant at almost the exact same time we lost her… So still at six.
@unksol This is related to the phenomenon of being incapussitated by a sleeping cat on one’s lap. (I have one who likes to supervise my naps, and extend them as a result.)
@Kyeh@unksol@yakkoTDI For reasons unknown my cats stay out of the chair I always sit in but they own my other chair and my bed. And one of them owns my bathroom sink.
@Kidsandliz@unksol@yakkoTDI Mine has various spots and sometimes they make no sense to me. I have this thin little cheap rug that I folded up and put against a step in my bathroom that’s easy to trip on otherwise, and he decided that he loves to sleep there. It’s a dark boring place but he likes the little rug, I guess!
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
Bandit LOVES to sleep on my lap on the couch. In fact that’s where he was until a couple of minutes ago when I got up to make a sandwich. He is very aware of the fact that my lap will routinely disappear if I feel like getting up. I will generally shift his limp body to the side and make my escape. Most times (like this one) he is still there when I return… Unless he can relocate to another lap, like my wife’s, if she is also on the couch. But, TBH if he does that he will normally shift back to my lap on my return.
@chienfou@Kyeh@unksol@yakkoTDI I do kind of wonder when sprawled so unevenly over lumps and bumps how the heck cats find that comfortable. Maybe they trade heat from us for comfort.
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
That’s exactly what Tuc has been doing lately! He leans up against my leg resting his shoulder and head on my leg! When he’s wanting a change of pace from my lap anyway.
Another thing he just started doing is pulling my two towels down from the towel rod and curling up on them, he used to just like laying on the tile floor IDK why he all of the sudden wants to lay on the towels? Plus, that tends to cause matting on his fur.
Cats, will we ever really understand what’s going on in their heads!?
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI I didn’t disagree with anything in the article, but I did know most of those things already from having had and loved cats for many years. One person who I’ve learned new useful information from is Jackson Galaxy - he does know his stuff!
Yes I agree, most stuff I knew. I did find it interesting how they studied cats from other countries and how they’re different but I think the results are obvious because the people are different! And then there’s the same old argument about what’s best, indoor or outdoor… Tucs lucky, he’s got the best of both worlds, outdoor fresh air on the deck and then us on the inside!
BTW… I was just looking for some wall art for Tuc, I’m going to hang some pics (maybe canvas prints or those flat metal sculpture things) lower to the floor especially just for him. If any of you cat loving people have some ideas I’d love to hear them. Thanks
I’ve seen those channels or at least videos for cats! But I think it’s cheaper to get art for him to look at rather buying him his own TV, Lord KNOWS we’re not going to share ours for more than 5 to 10 minutes! A lava lamp might be something, I wonder if they make them with fish…
@chienfou@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI Yes they need fish. At one point in time with my previous cats we had real, live goldfish (fish are more work than cats too) as brat child wanted them. For about 3 weeks anyway. Gold fish interact with the outside world. And, given a minimum of 50 gallons (with 20-25 for each additional gold fish), each live about 20 years (they die really young when in a tank that is too small). They are, apparently the smartest fish out there.
Anyway not knowing that I had 3 of them in an 8 gallon tank (gave them away about a month later to someone with a big tank when the the kid lost interest and I found out just how big the tank needed to be - the cats did not lose interent). Boy they were cat TV. The cats would come up to the tank and the fish would swim over. Cats tried their best to get to them (had part of a brick holding the top down). They’d bat at the tank, fish would dart and then come back. The cats would sit for ages watching them.
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
We have goldfish in a pond out front and the 2 cats will spend a good bit of time just crouched on the edge watching the fish swim around. Bandit fell in once when he was young but I don’t think he’s done that again since. It was pretty amazing just how fast he got out of that water! Best I can tell they’ve never caught one though.
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
A fish tank would be fun but it’s a lot of work. We tried setting up one a few years ago but we couldn’t get the water pH correct. That ended up being a lot of money down the drain.
Many years ago we had a pickerel that we caught in a huge octagon tank and that was wild, he was huge too! IDK if we want something else to care for right now though. Maybe a beta fish that doesn’t need filter and all that.
@chienfou@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI That would be male beta fish singular as they kill each other. Why would the pet store tell us that? We bought three after the gold fish got themselves to a “right sized” tank. Within a week we had one. And they do not interact with the outside world the way gold fish do.
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
The goldfish started out several years ago as some of those 25 cent ones available at a local walmart.
They actually lived in a couple of buckets for 2-3 months until I got the pond installed. I think there were six initially and they were all just solid orange. Once they got in the pond (about 1 inch long at that time) they thrived. Overtime they actually managed to have successful batches of fry that grew into other goldfish. Some of those fell victim to frogs and/or snakes and/or birds that ate them before they got big enough to be viable on their own. Interestingly enough those were not just solid orange, but had more intricate markings in different shades of orange, whites and blacks as well as showy fins and tails. Currently I have nine that are all a few years old at least. They range in size from about 3 inches to probably close to 5 or 6. They are extremely self-sufficient and the pond ecosystem is such that even if I don’t feed them for a considerable period of time, they still do fine. Since I live in Central Alabama, if the pond does freeze over, the surface water movement from the overflow waterfall will keep an area of open water and entrain oxygen into the water well enough that the fish survive with no problem. They basically hibernate once the water temp gets below 55 and you shouldn’t even feed them as it’s difficult for them to digest anything at that temp.
@chienfou@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI Just showed this to one of my cats. He was interested. He also kept looking off the laptop screen when fish would swim out of view. He got up and looked behind the screen. Then lay back down again to watch. I was surprised he wasn’t batting at the screen since he does that with the bouncing cards that go across the screen when you win at solitaire.
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI Toby watched but wasn’t too interested. He’s lucky enough to have birds and squirrels to watch through the windows and sliding glass doors.
Lynnerizer, can you put up a bird feeder outside one of your windows, or does the HOA forbid that?
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
Your pond is super cool, my guy used to have one at his parents house but he didn’t have fish just turtles and frogs. Those goldfish are beautiful! Thanks for all the info!
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
That’s hilarious how he looked around back to see where the fish went.
I’ve been on a sleeping frenzy after being awake for 24 hours but when I come out of it I’m going to show Tuc the video and see what he does.
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
Yeah we’re not aloud to have bird feeders. A few months ago I almost bought one anyway, the kind that goes against the window and you can video the birds but it was expensive and if they made me remove it I’d be pretty pissed, and OUT $200! Figured no need to set myself up for THAT! Lol I do have a few hummingbird feeders though, so does the guy across from me, it’s the seeds and mess that they don’t want so that’s probably why nobody’s said anything about them. We’ll see what happens next year when I put up the tiny little hummingbird houses I just got last week. They’re so cute! I’ve never used those so I’m excited!
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Lynnerizer@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI Yeah, the bird feeders do make a mess; if it’s dropping on the ground it’s no big deal, but at my mother’s place it drops on her patio so they have to sweep it off; at least it’s a private patio.
@chienfou@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@macromeh@unksol@yakkoTDI
Yeah we have a deck and then there’s someone below us so we’d cause a mess for them as well. I also believe they don’t want us attracting other wild animals, we get enough of those as it is. At the in-law’s house they’d throw food scraps right off their porch, like 3 feet away from it , for the wild animals. It was fun to watch but should you happen to go outside at night sometimes it could be a problem, especially when you ran into a skunk, the poor dog would agree! Besides skunks they’d have raccoons, fox, squirrels, chiIpmunks, rats and just about any other rodent in the area. While it was fun to watch I also found it dangerous and gross! Nothing I’d ever do so close to my house!
Skunks. Cute. Actually just trying again I think newer browser doesn’t do uploads well with meh
Yay. But yea don’t feed the rodents. They will destroy stuff. The skunks never bothered me. But they were 2011, and the first time I saw them I was very close opening a door. With their mom. Got lucky. But they just wanted to waddle away.
Dog chasing them… Yea. Probably gonna have a bad day.

Idk
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Kyeh @unksol
Holy shit, you have more cats than that! That’s a lot of poop to scoop.
@Kyeh @Star2236 mistakes were made. I’m not proud of them.
@Kyeh excellent observation
@unksol

@unksol @werehatrack I’m only at 6.

@yakkoTDI I mean, there IS still room for him on the couch!
@Kyeh
FTFY.
@yakkoTDI Oh, right.
@Kyeh @yakkoTDI id have had to relocate D’Artagnan which may have made everyone else scamper. And I was amused/didn’t want to bother them
