Why me??
9I’ve gone my entire adult life having NEVER broken a phone screen…until today. The little shit fell TWO FEET from the bottom of the car seat onto the pavement, face down. Must have hit a rock/pebble/chunk of concrete first, otherwise the raised edges of my Otter Box would have saved it. So mad at myself because I take exceptional care of all my electronics…and this comes right when I really cannot afford to replace it
Have y’all done anything really stupid and regrettable lately?

Bought an IRK for $22.22
@cengland0 Okay I walked right into that one. Well played.
Sorry
I feel your pain.
My only broken screen was caused by the protective case. I was pulling the phone out of my pocket and the case snagged on my pants. Phone was pulled out of my hand and smacked the hard concrete.
My only broken screen was on an ereader. I was visiting my daughter and dropped it and it landed flat down, but… shattered the screen. She lives walking distance from a BN and I’m a Nook kinda gal and I just went and bought a new one cause me and nothing to read is worse than a root canal. (This was before it was just an op on a BN branded Samsung tablet so it was inexpensive relatively speaking but…)
Stupid and regrettable - I’m not sure when I did it, but I’ve misplaced my last years tax return, and I was just sure that I knew where it was! So that makes it harder to do this year’s.
@Kyeh I haven’t misplaced my last years return. I KNOW it’s in my house somewhere.
@Barney I wish I even knew that! I did have my mother’s from last year, (I take her to the appointments,) so I called to see if I gave mine to her instead but they haven’t found it over there. Oh well. It’s just maddening because I’d have sworn it was where I thought it was.
@Kyeh Aw, I’m so sorry.
@Barney thanks - sorry I’m stupid!
@Barney @Kyeh
I heard that you can get a copy of last year’s return from the government by asking nicely or something
or maybe you used to be able to do that
or maybe all the IRS employees no longer have jobs who knows it’s too much to keep up with
Anyway if you can get government to provide you with copy or you can get a licensed accountant to pull a copy for you
And then you file for an extension so you have till October
You oughta be good
Hopefully
@Barney @f00l Thanks - I think I’ll be okay, and maybe I will find it … but if not, I can make it work.
Be sure to blame the new goat whomever that is.
@Kidsandliz Yeah, let’s get on with naming the new goat! I’ve done my penance for all of you. I need a rest.
@ItalianScallion @Kidsandliz Rest and relax on one of my many inflatable friends! Guaranteed comfortable. You deserve it!
@PooltoyWolf What a wonderful respite that would be from the last few months! I’d be on my way except I don’t know where I’m going… it must not be here up north.
@ItalianScallion Central Florida, summer central lol
Is that the screen, or did you do the schmott thing and equip the phone with a gorilla glass screen protector that you’ve forgotten about? (Full disclosure, I did that once, and the guy at UBreakIFix was very amused.)
@werehatrack No screen protector. Digitizer is cracked, actual panel is fine. Fortunately digitizer is still functioning properly, as far as I can tell.
@PooltoyWolf @werehatrack
Have you had time to see if the screen can be replaced on your model phone?
This varies
I’ve never cracked a screen, but I’ve got a couple of good battery replacements from my local repair shop and they do screens also
Some phones it’s impossible to get a replacement screen or else. The original construction has the screen glued to all the other phone so practically speaking, you can’t replace the screen on those phones.
@f00l @werehatrack This is a Samsung Galaxy S10+ and I’m concerned that dismantling it will permanently wreck the waterproofing. I’m also very hesitant to buy a new phone because I NEED my headphone jack. >:C
@f00l @PooltoyWolf
Not to be a shill or anything but I can heartily recommend “backmarket” as a source for impeccable second-hand phones. I’ve had super good luck with them, to the point where they came in and would look like brand new phones (in OEM packaging) that had never been used before.
@PooltoyWolf
This info is intended for if your current phone is not repairable:
It’s not the perfect phone but the Moto Stylus 5G 2024 still has a headphone jack (and stylus) and sits in the mid-budget range. Moto has some more budget versions with headphone jacks.
@fibrs86 Funny you should say that. My mother has that exact model phone, and between it and the previous Moto Stylus model she had before, I was not at all thrilled. I basically require flagship Galaxy phones at this point; they’re what I’ve been buying secondhand since the S5.
@chienfou @f00l I’ll have to look into that!
@f00l @PooltoyWolf @werehatrack
Can’t you buy a dongle for a new phone and then plug your headphones into that?
@f00l @Star2236 @werehatrack Looking into that now. I am hopeful it is possible to use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.
@PooltoyWolf I’ve been using the Pixel A line for a while. Reasonably affordable, they last me 3-4 years, and get Android updates longer than any other budget phones. I’m on a Pixel 6A currently. Can confirm a cheap-ish USB-C to 3.5mm adapter works when I need corded, though I have more wireless than wired now.
Since it sounds like the digitizer is still working, you could just try adding a screen protector now to keep it from getting worse and protect your fingers. Of course, air bubbles may be unbearable depending on the specifics.
@mschuette @PooltoyWolf
I have an old pixel that’s still a good phone.
But the lack of an SD card slot plus Google taking over part of the screen space with its garbage unless I root the phone (which I won’t) just pisses me off
When I buy another android to update stuff it probably won’t be a pixel because of that
@f00l @PooltoyWolf I had a Galaxy S7 a few phones back and I found Samsung’s proprietary stuff more annoying than just accepting the Google-ness.
@mschuette @PooltoyWolf
I’ve had Samsung phones in the past and I live with their crap
But I’m not necessarily buying a Samsung if I don’t buy a pixel
I get something a few years old anyway
Yeah I know it doesn’t get updates but fuck that
OK I’ve never broken a screen that I remember
But I did manage to accidentally lay down mynewish Samsung into a bowl of water without realizing it I couldn’t figure out why the Bluetooth suddenly started getting correctly and then I died
This was before waterproof phones, and that phone was dead and gone
I was so pissed at myself over that
@f00l You’re a ghost
?!
@f00l @Kyeh His phone ghosted him.
@f00l @werehatrack
That’s not what she said.
@Kyeh @werehatrack
Siri made me into a ghost.
It’s always Siri’s fault. Always.
@f00l @Kyeh @werehatrack I so wanted to read this as “Siri made me into a goat.”
@ItalianScallion @Kyeh @werehatrack
And I support your right to read it that way
/giphy “ghost goat”

@f00l @Kyeh @werehatrack Gotta see what Mediocrebot does with this…
/showme a ghost goat
Not bad, @mediocrebot! I wish I had this to use as a self-portrait for March.
@f00l @ItalianScallion @werehatrack
And she’s been a goat way back - although @narfcake has said there’s no real reason people can’t have a second term …
I found out mine had developed a crack in the back that ran across the top of the wide angle lens on my S10 when I kept having a weird light flare in my pictures. Hadn’t really noticed it before since it was pretty small. Other than that I haven’t ever broken a screen. I probably will tomorrow now though!
BTW… Quick 'zon search shows kits are available for replacing the screen and/or digitalizer. Since you dabble in electronics repair this should be right in your wheelhouse. Looks like some come with waterproofing kits. Of course YMMV
Good Luck!
I, too, went over 20 years having never broken a phone screen. I finally had to get mine replaced though because the crack I ended up getting in mine about 6 or so months ago kept getting worse. The problem is that I have a phone with a curved at the edges screen. Next new phone I get will probably not have that… I hope we get more low-tech options in the cellular industry again.
You did hit the bad luck lottery. I have a case like yours that comes up around the phone and I’ve thought for sure I’ve shattered it a couple of times. Mines fallen off the washing machine face down, top of the car onto the cement and my $3 case has saved it. It had to hit a rock or something for that to happen. Sorry, hopefully you find something.
I was laying in the sun yesterday (in Florida) from like 2:30-6. I sprayed 50 spf all over me. I thought for sure bc of the later hours in the day I’d be ok. I got fried in some odd places. My knees, my ankles and feet (that’s my fault from walking in the water and not reapplying) and bathing suit line, random patches on my arms and back, but my face neck and ears all fine. I look like a very strange lobster
Only ever broke one screen: had phone in my pocket when i rolled under my truck on a gravel driveway. From then on, always put my phone somewhere safe when doing car stuff.
Regrettable. I got Scleral lenses ($800 after insurance) and I’ve gone from slightly off long distance vision but excellent reading vision to better than 20/20 distance vision but now I cant see anything within 3ft of me without reading glasses.
I don’t think I’m going to stick with the sclerals. I feel handicapped/half blind now frustrating waste of $800. Not worth losing my close vision to see things far off. I wasn’t told this would be the trade off.
HA HA AH AH AHA HA HA OH MY GOD MY LIFE IS BOTH A TRAGEDY AND A FARCE.
The worst has got to be me screwing off on math, and in return, having to cram everything in the last 5 weeks of the school year.
It is my fault.
@Wollyhop
Nope.
Blame Siri.
Or blame Google.
@f00l @Wollyhop But don’t blame me. I’m the Expired Goat now.
@ItalianScallion @Wollyhop
Expired G. O. A. T. goat?
@f00l @ItalianScallion @Wollyhop still look like a goat to me based on icom
