I haven’t tried any of their other blends, but I really like the Breakfast Blend. It’s in a package (orange), not a tin.
It’s a milder coffee, but it’s got a full taste without being bitter. It’s 100% Arabica, medium.
I’ll have to try the one in the tin.

A few potential reasons Walmart might have wanted to be removed:
They have changed supplier to a lower quality that they don’t want to be compared to that review which would get people pissed
Their supplier doesn’t want Walmart cutting into their house brand margins.
Walmart is so big they get from multiple suppliers/can’t guarantee quality l/may buy on market conditions. And they just don’t want the attention.

I don’t care, really as long as it is beans. I keep a grinder right next to machine. Creamer makes it taste good regardless… My Sinful Pleasure Starbucks went up $5, so I buy another brand… $25 is just too much for my retired budget.
So don’t take this personally but what are you getting out of fresh ground coffee that’s different than foldgers. If you just dump creamer in and don’t care about the taste?

And if I can coffee nerd for a moment, ground coffee starts to go stale after 24-48 hours. Whole beans start to go stale around 10 days. Most every coffee you find on the shelves is a blend of just enough of the beans that they can label it with a certain name and then blend it with the cheapest thing they can find. The coffee you buy off the shelf has likely been roasted months ago.
The reason you add cream and sugar to your coffee is because it is old and stale… which makes it bitter. I only roast single estate beans. Fresh coffee is actually almost sweet. I drink it black. But that might be just because I’m lazy

There was an older lady where I worked security as a summer job during college who would bring in her own coffee. And considering what they were being paid. Cost something. And she would make some in the shit break room drip coffee maker. And offer us all a cup.
One in particular she thought blueberries. I think I actually got a hint. I suspect she ground it at home since she brought to work in a Ziploc. It was a nice thing to do.
I suspect my coffee tasting abilities are even worse than wine… I wonder if I still have the pics of the work coffee machine I disassembled one night and chipped… 3/8 of an inch of lime scale off the tank. Cause it was making cold coffee.

Coffee should be roasted no more than 15 months after it is harvested.
Coffee should be ground no more than 15 days after it is roasted.
Coffee should be brewed no more than 15 minutes after it is ground.

That being said, I normally buy from two coffee houses. The first one is who I found probably 20 years ago, and they helped me learn how to roast properly. They’d answer any questions I had. It was a husband and wife who owned the business and they’d always leave a note on my receipt. And not just ‘Thanks for your order’, it would be a handwritten paragraph every time. I believe they have sold the company but it is still a wonderful place I like to support. And they share my namesake
The other shop I buy from is https://www.sweetmarias.com . They typically have better choices for African coffee (which I buy all the time). They are probably larger than The Captain’s Coffee but still not a huge conglomerate. And they have good prices for beans bought in bulk. I normally buy 10-20 pounds of raw beans at a time. Because I like to roast

I have only had fresh roast coffee two times in my life. Once on a visit to my friends coffee plantation in Guatemala, and once at a hotel called The Hemlock Inn, (Loudonville, Ohio) where they roast their own beans.
Now I don’t even bother with “brands”. I suck it up with Kirkland, which is a better price point, and a vacuum sealer.
If I’m desperate for coffee at the supermarket I look for whatever is whole bean, light roast, most recently roasted (preferably within the last 2-3 weeks), and single-origin, in that order.
If I check all of these boxes, I see it as a sign that the coffee god, Caffeinius, is smiling upon me on that particular day, and purchase as many bags as I can find, up to four, and put all but one bag in the freezer.
My girlfriend will ask me if we need four bags of coffee. I will tell her yes, that we will find space in the freezer, and ask that she trusts my judgement. She obliges, and I eagerly make it as soon as we return home.
She pours it over ice, adds oat milk, and tells me that it tastes great. But I barely hear her because I’m still awestruck by my good fortune for finding inexpensive, half-decent coffee at the supermarket.
Out of that list, Lavazza is the one I keep going back to because it strikes a good balance between price and quality, though I have noticed that even within the same brand the roast date makes a bigger difference than the name on the bag. Illy is smoother but costs nearly double, and Bustelo gives you that strong dark kick if you like it bold but it can be a bit one dimensional. What really changed my perspective was learning about the roasting process itself, because supermarket beans are usually roasted weeks or months before they hit the shelf and that affects the flavour more than any brand label. I started checking for a roasted on date and avoiding anything older than three weeks, and that simple habit improved my morning cup more than switching brands ever did. If you want to understand why freshness matters so much, this one breaks down the roasting stages and explains what happens inside the bean. In the end, I think trying a few side by side is the only way to know what suits your taste, because everyone’s palate is different.
@zippyzeb Gevalia is good! Many years ago I had a subscription with them. They had some really weird flavored coffee (think, maple bacon, etc.), and a whole line of coffees from all over the world. They were all excellent!
For signing up, they sent you a coffee maker, (drip, like a Mr. Coffee), cups, and a huge stoneware canister. I think I still have all of that in storage somewhere.
One of the more fascinating things about today’s coffee world is the university level research being done that have lead recently to changes in what the AHA says is a ‘safe’ number of cups per day. (5 if you are wondering).
While most of the studies are correlational, they still show how loving coffee can benefit your health.
One of the others I found interesting, it was from England I think, showed that those who drank there coffee black received more benefits from it than those who drank it with any type of creamer (dairy or non-dairy). Sugar itself did not seem to have as much effect Interestingly, more positives were obtained from decaff than from coffee with any cream/creamer/milk added.
@f00l Most days I drink one cup of coffee, hot, black, with breakfast. Rarely, I will have a second cup later in the morning or early afternoon. None in the later afternoon or evening - else it interferes with sleep.
I’m not at all a coffee connoisseur; I make 1 large mug a day with a 1 cup filter holder. I don’t like light roasts because they’re too acidic for me. I’ve found that Target’s “Signature Organic Sumatra Mandheling” & Amazon’s “365 by Whole Foods Market, Pacific Rim Vienna Roast Ground Coffee, Dark Roast” are both good enough for my plebian tastes. ️
Having used primarily fully-automatic and super-automatic Saeco machines (starting with the first refurbished Saeco Giro I bought from Woot); I’m partial to whole bean for convenience purposes.
Push button, machine grinds/tamps/brews, repeat. Does a super-auto make the best coffee with it’s plastic brew group? probably not, but things always taste better when someone (or something) else makes it.
That said, I’ve always been fond of cheap, whole-bear, Eight-O-Clock coffee. Starbucks seems overpriced for burnt roast; Never liked Folgers (do they even have whole bean coffee?).
All that said, my Father-in-law has been sending us 5# bags of Equal Exchange coffee every few months for the last few years, so we’ve been spoiled.
When I don’t want to take a trip to the coffee shop to buy the good beans I usually get a Peets dark roast. Last time I ran out and they didn’t have any so I bought a Starbucks Columbia and it was fine.

Anything strong, hot, and black. Independent convenience stores tend to have it that way… usually also aged in the carafe.
Out of that list, Lavazza is the one I keep going back to because it strikes a good balance between price and quality, though I have noticed that even within the same brand the roast date makes a bigger difference than the name on the bag. Illy is smoother but costs nearly double, and Bustelo gives you that strong dark kick if you like it bold but it can be a bit one dimensional. What really changed my perspective was learning about the roasting process itself, because supermarket beans are usually roasted weeks or months before they hit the shelf and that affects the flavour more than any brand label. I started checking for a roasted on date and avoiding anything older than three weeks, and that simple habit improved my morning cup more than switching brands ever did. @zippyzeb Gevalia is good! Many years ago I had a subscription with them. They had some really weird flavored coffee (think, maple bacon, etc.), and a whole line of coffees from all over the world. They were all excellent!
For signing up, they sent you a coffee maker, (drip, like a Mr. Coffee), cups, and a huge stoneware canister. I think I still have all of that in storage somewhere.

One of the more fascinating things about today’s coffee world is the university level research being done that have lead recently to changes in what the AHA says is a ‘safe’ number of cups per day. (5 if you are wondering).
While most of the studies are correlational, they still show how loving coffee can benefit your health.
One of the others I found interesting, it was from England I think, showed that those who drank there coffee black received more benefits from it than those who drank it with any type of creamer (dairy or non-dairy). Sugar itself did not seem to have as much effect Interestingly, more positives were obtained from decaff than from coffee with any cream/creamer/milk added.
The moral, drink it black

I usually or almost always drink hot coffee black
I accomplish this by drinking espresso
When it’s iced coffee, I gunk it up with good things
but not every time really well made coffee makes great black iced coffee and sometimes I do that
Either way I frequently sip it all day long if it’s iced or for an hour or two if it’s hot
I don’t care if it gets to room temperature; either way it’s still great
I avoid ice cubes in my iced coffee. I don’t want it diluted.
I want it to be served cold or at least chilled and I’m fine with that. No cubes.

@f00l Most days I drink one cup of coffee, hot, black, with breakfast. Rarely, I will have a second cup later in the morning or early afternoon. None in the later afternoon or evening - else it interferes with sleep.

I’m not at all a coffee connoisseur; I make 1 large mug a day with a 1 cup filter holder. I don’t like light roasts because they’re too acidic for me. I’ve found that Target’s “Signature Organic Sumatra Mandheling” & Amazon’s “365 by Whole Foods Market, Pacific Rim Vienna Roast Ground Coffee, Dark Roast” are both good enough for my plebian tastes.

Having used primarily fully-automatic and super-automatic Saeco machines (starting with the first refurbished Saeco Giro I bought from Woot); I’m partial to whole bean for convenience purposes.
Push button, machine grinds/tamps/brews, repeat. Does a super-auto make the best coffee with it’s plastic brew group? probably not, but things always taste better when someone (or something) else makes it.
That said, I’ve always been fond of cheap, whole-bear, Eight-O-Clock coffee. Starbucks seems overpriced for burnt roast; Never liked Folgers (do they even have whole bean coffee?).
All that said, my Father-in-law has been sending us 5# bags of Equal Exchange coffee every few months for the last few years, so we’ve been spoiled.

When I don’t want to take a trip to the coffee shop to buy the good beans I usually get a Peets dark roast. Last time I ran out and they didn’t have any so I bought a Starbucks Columbia and it was fine.
