@Kyeh The high winds have kept it mostly away. Alas, it’s these high winds that’s been fueling the devastation too. Were talking category 1 hurricane speed winds, except it fire being blown around, not water.
@haydesigner Eats, shoots and leaves. (I’m guilty of subjectless sentence fragments, among other grammatical faux pas, so i can’t really say anything! )
@lisaviolet, genuinely not trying to be a pedantic jerk, I’m just confused. Hollywood Hills is about 140 miles from the Mexican border. (I live in Cardiff myself, which is about 100 miles from the big fires, and I’m also 40 miles north of Tijuana.)
@lisaviolet I know. I texted my sister this morning to see what her daughter and her family is doing (she is the one just south of the fire) - she just had her first baby in November. My cousin is the one north of the fire right, literally, on the edge of the mountains there.
At least with the map I have seen it appears to be headed more south than north so I think my niece/family is more at risk than my cousin.
The smoke map shows heavy smoke where she lives, my cousin not so much so.
@lisaviolet Well now my cousin is sandwiched between the new Kenneth fire and the Palisades fire. He’s 5 miles south of the Kenneth fire and now 9 miles north of the northern edge of the Palisades fire. I’d imagine the smoke around there is terrible. At least my niece is still about 10 miles south of the Palisades fire.
@lisaviolet I know. I can’t imagine being anyone living in the middle of the current CA fire disasters. They must be so stressed out. My cousin has the car packed, keeping the cat indoors and debating if it would be wise to leave prior to an evacuation order where it is easier to leave due to road traffic but there is the increased looting risk if not home or hope there won’t be one.
I’m a coward. I’d run now. I had decided if I ended up with a job in a hurricane zone I’d own a uhaul type trailer just for evacuation purposes. Now I am thinking that might be wise in frequent wildfire areas too.
For anyone who ends up with ash or smoke issues from the LA fires (or other fires) you might find this useful about the after effects and how to clean up even if your home isn’s damaged. The information is from a study from the Boulder fire.
@chienfou@OnionSoup If it had crashed, an appropriate charge would have been negligent manslaughter, If that charge exists on the books in California. But the plane has just been grounded, and will probably be back in the air shortly. There might be other charges appropriate concerning interfering in the operation of firefighting equipment. Certainly, harm was caused.
@OnionSoup
Article I read was unclear of source of drone… Miscreant/citizen vs legit news coverage vs firefighting resource or other govt user. I can see potential legit use but seems most likely it wasn’t
@chienfou@OnionSoup people have died in those fires, some charges need to be filed, what ever the DA can make happen, and the maximum sentence needs to be handed down. Whoever it is is a disgrace to humanity (Sadly there are way too many of those in this country these days)
I’m fine, thank you. I’m about 30 miles away from the nearest one here.
@narfcake Really glad to hear that - I figured you were since I saw some posts from you! Is the air pretty nasty, though?
@Kyeh The high winds have kept it mostly away. Alas, it’s these high winds that’s been fueling the devastation too. Were talking category 1 hurricane speed winds, except it fire being blown around, not water.
@narfcake We’re all too familiar with that in CO.
So far s’ok
@Cerridwyn !
Safe here, a couple of hundred miles south. The wind is picking up, but nothing like in the LA area.
@lisaviolet !
@lisaviolet a couple hundred miles south would put you comfortably in Mexico.
@haydesigner Eats, shoots and leaves. (I’m guilty of subjectless sentence fragments, among other grammatical faux pas, so i can’t really say anything! )
@haydesigner Okay, it’s more like 140 miles. I was thinking drive time. Add sixty to that and we’re in Tijuana.
@haydesigner @lisaviolet
Tomato to-mah-to

@haydesigner I’m married to a pedant, I’m used to being corrected. lol
@lisaviolet, fair enough. I apologize nonetheless.
All good here! Family is too, so far.
@ChompyGator !
@ChompyGator @lisaviolet @Cerridwyn @narfcake I hope it stays okay for all of you!
I have a cousin and a niece both within 12 miles of the palisades fire (one south of it one north of it). So far so good with them.
@Kidsandliz Yikes. Don’t you have a good friend who lives in CA also?
@Kidsandliz That’s still scary, though.
@Kyeh Yes but she is a little bit south of LA so likely will be OK except for smoke.
@lisaviolet I know. I texted my sister this morning to see what her daughter and her family is doing (she is the one just south of the fire) - she just had her first baby in November. My cousin is the one north of the fire right, literally, on the edge of the mountains there.

@Kidsandliz Horrible.

Drone takes out one of 2 super-scooper firefighter planes in LA fire area
@chienfou they should be tried for attempted murder
@chienfou I’m unable to get beyond the paywall… but please say it was stupidity and not maliciousness that caused it.
If stupidity, not sure I would call it attempted murder, but attempted manslaughter might not be off the books.
@chienfou @OnionSoup If it had crashed, an appropriate charge would have been negligent manslaughter, If that charge exists on the books in California. @OnionSoup
Now looks like it WAS a civilian drone that was flying unauthorized.
@chienfou @OnionSoup people have died in those fires, some charges need to be filed, what ever the DA can make happen, and the maximum sentence needs to be handed down. Whoever it is is a disgrace to humanity (Sadly there are way too many of those in this country these days)
I am so thankful for the deal on Happi Air Purifiers, they are humming away and make a huge difference. Thanks, Meh!
