My last 3 have been pure garbage, and I’ve been doing this since original BOCs, Fukos, and the current Irks. Being disappointed is just a meh thing, but I was wondering if anyone else feels the same way?
The BOCs were garbage. I got two and the second one came with basically everything broken or malfunctioning. That was kind of deal, it’s junk but also a fun gamble. My 2 cents.
It’s very much like playing a gacha. Sometimes, you get an SSR that makes you think maybe life is worth living. Most of the time, you get yet another Common you immediately throw into the bin.
But no matter what, you’re getting something useless that’ll at best give you a little hit of dopamine.
Same. I got 3 IRKs in the last Mehrathon and I donated everything to charity or trashed except a scale, which I didn’t really need. Very disappointing and full of regret. I don’t want to play anymore. At least for a while.
I received one with some kind of plant material that had disintegrated and covered everything in the package, still cleaning pieces up months later. there was also a plastic snowman that someone had used for soccer practice. I live in a rural area, so I had to pay for the IRK twice once to order it and then to have it hauled away. We pay for trash service. Looked like they had swept the floor up and sent it to me. Nothing worth keeping or donating.
The thrill of seeking the unknown is the draw. Unfortunately (evidently) the payout has been lackluster of late. I haven’t participated in quite a while due to my personal/internal price vs value metrics and tolerance for the gamble.
That being said, I’m glad people still want to take part because it’s fun to see the gloating and the "wailing and gnashing of teeth* when the reveals happen.
Back when it was “fun”, some complained and demanded more “fairness” in the competition without actually understanding what that would mean. Now, everyone gets a chance to buy a fairly expensive, but mostly worthless participation trophy.
From the beginning of the BOC, Fuko and Fuku days it was the chase and rarity along with the low cost of entry that made the effort “exciting” and worthwhile even if a successful capture netted zero actual worth. That is no longer the case with the majority of the IRK offerings, but I understand that some people have to be at the bottom to hold up the pyramid.
@kuoh I was one of those thinking it should be more fair… But the implementation of this is not what I had hoped for.
Solutions I suggested were things like "when the IRK became available anyone on line would have 1 min to hit buy… And the “winners” would be picked by lottery from those online at the right time. Still a rush to wait for the item AND get your request in quickly but gives a little better chance for those with poor latency.
There was a real problem with latency for people only able to access from cell phones in some poorly covered parts of the country. I know for myself… I had almost 100% success rate from my home PC but when in the office and having to use my phone it was close to 0%.
@OnionSoup I would venture to guess that most people had much lower success rates previously regardless of the platform used. However now that it is guaranteed 100% for everyone under the new system, I suspect the overall satisfaction rate has not improved much if any at all.
@kuoh I never was successful in snagging a BOC, even when they made a game the way to get one, so I gave up trying. My brother managed to get a few, but they weren’t worth the effort.
I was lucky with my first IRK and got some good stuff. The second was pretty meh, but luckily my physical therapist was breastfeeding, so I could at least give her the breast pump bottle. The last one had a family-sized George Forman grill and a few other useful things, so I’m 2 for 3. That said, I only bite about every 8-10 months when the price is decent and I’m feeling adventurous.
I miss irks being something you had to actually be prepared to score. The crazy pricing scheme exhausting. The last few have been pretty lackluster luster but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that my address will fall in line with the kitchen happiness.
@macromeh I’ve had a few over the years that have definitely been worth it. My favorite one was crafted by KoolHandJoe as a thank you for sending a bunch of crap to the meh staff including magnets with his face on them.
I’m not paying $30 for an Irk, even if I will eventually be reimbursed.
My choice, and plenty of people will pay that much so I’m sure Meh isn’t hurting. But I’ve had very few the last two years.
As for is it worth it though… I’ve never had a fantastic IRK like those that got Cuisinart pan sets, drum kits, and luggage sets.
In dozens of IRKs beat I’ve got was a vacuum sealer… But yes, I say it’s worth it. I think in most boxes the dollar amount of what I received exceeded what I paid and often it’s something I never would have bought but I’m happy to have.
So if you have discretionary money around… Yes it’s worth it. So I think I’ve come out “ahead” even with middle of the road boxes.
… But remember with an IRK it’s not just the goods you’re paying for, but the entertainment in anticipating it and opening it.
/tldr I’m not buying it, but I do think it’s worth it for many people (if discounted to lowest price anyway)
I NEVER was able to get a BOC, Fuko?, or an IRK until they changed the platform. I try to get one every time if there are enough items I want to buy to get the IRK at the lowest price. The mystery is the most fun, hoping for something really good, or even moderately good, or possibly usable. I feel like I’ve gotten at least my $10 worth. I missed it this time because I got busy and forgot to go back and look until after MN.
@blaineg reruns? Returns?
Final? Fatal?
I have a dream tech vac still in a box in my living room. Looks like good-quality Dyson clone. Problem is, completely dead. Is it just the $80 battery? Almost would buy one if I knew that was the problem. But maybe the motor or something else?
Dyson stuff is pretty swappable and I already have a bunch. Also not cheap. But not going to help me with Dreametech. I’d love to make the thing work; it seems pretty nice!
Between the Cuisinart bread maker, mixer, food processors, sets yes sets of luggage, and the P2 power generator I’ve received, it’s more than worth it to me. Yes I’ve received XS and 5X clothing, but I am fortunate enough to know ppl who are able to use them. I’ve also received beautiful bedding and fun lazer lamps. What my family and friends are unable to utilize I donate to charities and I admit the fun of unboxing entertains my family and myself. Thanks Meh
Note to MEH… shipping any type of food items or candles to Phoenix, Arizona before November through March = instant melting in package before being received by consumer.
Latest Irk: 6 packages of melted or congealed “ patriotic Star Gummies” in the latest IRK that are now swirled color blobs. Not the best package delivered today. Even if I freeze them they will never be “ stars”…Just blobs.
But thank you for the brand new hair dryer, earrings, random empty tiny lidded / plastic container and melted soy candle. Oh and nice Meh bag.
As someone who has gotten more than 40 IRKs et al from meh plus probably close to 10 more on sidedeal, have a couple of comments which with most might agree.
I know the good old days of IRKs for $ 5 are long gone with cost rising but to make me buy a bunch of shit I really don’t need or don’t have room for in order to get the IRK at a half way reasonable price feels like I am being taking advantage of. That takes the bloom off the rose of getting a box which you have no idea what is in it.
Therefore the last two IRKs I bought were during meh anniversary celebration where it was an IRK at a reasonable price with no strings attached.
I miss Kool Hand Joe and his personalization of the IRK’s send-for me it was one that included a bird toy for Walter, an all ball IRK after I made my comment about a needing a third ball, a horse pinata after my comment of kicking a dead horse, my two IRK’s where everything was in a box and then the one where everything was bubble wrapped (including the bag) after my comments. Those were the fun days and I miss that.
Plus most of the appliances people get are in damaged boxes which meh probably couldn’t sell in good conscience anyway. Nothing really different or big surprises like the new X box series X gaming system I got in an IRK for $ 5.
@slipperyp you’re hilarious. Just reach out to CS or send me your address and I’ll mail you a plethora of them. In fact you send me the pans and I’ll send you bags.
this is my first one so i guess i am eager to be regretting ir 🥹

I’ve already given my reasons for giving up the chase. They all boil down to “the fun is gone.”
It is if you get a bomb with two fuses.
@Wollyhop always cut the red wire first. Or, wait, was it the blue wire?
@pmarin @Wollyhop This is why I only use purple wire when building such devices.
I received one with some kind of plant material that had disintegrated and covered everything in the package, still cleaning pieces up months later. there was also a plastic snowman that someone had used for soccer practice. @casezero
Luckily you can get a “surprise visit” from the DEA!

In the olden days, there was a small chance you’d buy something you regretted.
Now, it’s a certainty!
@kuoh I never was successful in snagging a BOC, even when they made a game the way to get one, so I gave up trying. My brother managed to get a few, but they weren’t worth the effort.

I still enjoy the anticipation and my last several IRKs were good.
Knocking on every piece of wood in arms length hoping this one will be a winner as well!
Are there IRKs in this thing? Happy Monday!!
I miss irks being something you had to actually be prepared to score. The crazy pricing scheme exhausting. The last few have been pretty lackluster luster but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that my address will fall in line with the kitchen happiness.
Found it
Were they ever worth it?
@macromeh I’ve had a few over the years that have definitely been worth it. My favorite one was crafted by KoolHandJoe as a thank you for sending a bunch of crap to the meh staff including magnets with his face on them.
@macromeh @sillyheathen I would say yes, but that was long ago and the worth wasn’t necessarily tied to the monetary value of the items received.
KuoH
@macromeh The broken electric scooter was my biggest score. A fun project to tinker with, and the project was completely successful.
People without electronics skills would likely have had a different opinion.
I’m not paying $30 for an Irk, even if I will eventually be reimbursed.

@sillyheathen @OnionSoup Never bought one myself, but it just seems like lately I’ve seen more regrets than accolades.

I still play and have fun with it.

My last two IRKs were a robot vacuum and an electric weedwhacker. Both obvious reruns, but both completely final.

@blaineg @pmarin “final” = “fine”? That’s what I assumed you meant …
@Kyeh @pmarin
Yea, fine.

What in the cubic zirconia?
@jml326 Silverware is always a nice score.

@AZnatural1 I had that problem with the gummies i got too for the same reason.
And I just got reeled right back in! Going to post mine in the reveal thread! Killin me meh! Also thank you so bloody much!

Irk received yesterday: a set of pots and pans with no bag.
100% pure regret and probably the last time I’ll do this. No bag is the part that seals this for me.
