[Market Research] Outrageously Large and/or Elaborate Halloween Decorations
5These things are completely out of control and we’re pretty sure Home Depot makes like a third of their annual revenue selling huge-ass Halloween decorations at the beginning of fall.
What do you think when you see these in the real world? Cool? Overkill? Played out? Do you have some???
Is there a daily deal discount retail price that gets you on board with a 10 foot ghoul next to your front porch?

I have seen yards with huge things and well thought out scenes. I have seen big messes as well. If you sell it and they can afford it some will buy it. And then there is the problem of where you will store this big pile of junk until the following October.
If you are going to sell this stuff having a thread where you post photos of cleverly thought out scenes in yards might encourage some people to buy that as then they’d have ideas about what to do with it. Others can give a wealth of ideas.
If you offer this stuff maybe run a photoshop contest of a scene only using what you are selling (Make it harder to AI it or swipe scenes off the internet). The winner gets one of each of the things. Post what you will be selling a week in advance so people have time to figure out what to do.
You could offer paper cut outs people could print of this stuff to create a “doll house” type scene and photo that to enter the contest.
I live in an apartment building facing the back so no decorations I’d use in my window could even be seen in the street - not to mention I can’t fit a 10’ skeleton in my apartment (although the cats might like to climb it) due to 7’ ceilings and only 525sf.
If someone died and made me king… oh wait that won’t solve anything for meh.
/showme a scary halloween king who is a ghoul and a second scary halloween king who is a skeleton
@Kidsandliz
10 ft skeleton and 7 ft ceiling
I take it you have no rooftop access? :>)
@mediocrebot yikes, bot.
@phendrick I live in an apartment building.
@Kidsandliz but those usually also come with a roof, hopefully?
You probably mean to tell me they are picky about letting you up there, though.
@phendrick We can’t get up there unless they forget to lock the door.
/showme a giant inflatable black cat in front of a house next to a small pumpkin as a simple pre-Halloween scene
@narfcake That cat is cool!!
@yakkoTDI
/showme a giant real black cat in front of a house next to a small pumpkin
That cat is cooler!!
Since I’m on the topic of giant cats …
@IAmBroom Cooler right up until he poops.
@IAmBroom @yakkoTDI
/showme a real giant black cat using a golf course sand trap as a litter box while golfers nearby facepalm with disbelief
@mediocrebot
@IAmBroom 100%
@IAmBroom @narfcake @yakkoTDI Real pros could hit that out from where it lies.
@mediocrebot gross
full disclosure: I bought the skeleton this year
@jouest I need the giant jack skellington. I would see him a sandy claws costume. Actually I’d probably just leave him up and make him a new costume for each season.
@jouest sew not see.
@sillyheathen am fully considering dressing up the skeleton seasonally and not just because I’m trying to avoid spending another $100 on the storage box.
@jouest we should collaborate on costume ideas.
@jouest @sillyheathen You WILL post photos of it, won’t you?
@jouest @Kyeh
I think I annoy people with my posting of the photos.
I’d hate to break with tradition.

@jouest @sillyheathen You’ll have to try harder to annoy me!
@sillyheathen perhaps Meh forum could crowdsource it…
@jouest we could turn into crowdsourced irks. They send us material or embellishments and we have to turn it into a costume.
@jouest @Kyeh @sillyheathen You a gazillion times DO NOT annoy people (who have any sense of joy in life) with your photos. And I would join a crowdsource to deliver you a skellington to dress up.
I really like seeing the giant skellies and such in other peoples’ yards but I would never have them myself - no place to store them for starters.
@Kyeh you could gift them like people do with pink flamingos
@jouest If I win the lottery, maybe!
@jouest @Kyeh Right?
But if I won the lottery, this is what I’d get (and build a structure to shield from the elements). The most beautiful haunt prop I’ve ever been privileged to witness:
@brainmist @jouest Oh, that’s terrifying!
@jouest @Kyeh In person, it’s weirdly beautiful; a whole lot of Halloween props are jump scares or gore, but this is elegant, with a well thought out soundtrack, and multiple animatronics (the skeletons also move). And it’s huge. Standing height is maybe 15 feet.
The use of Latin (I think?) really adds to the alien nature. I wish I could find an interpretation.
@brainmist @jouest Latin? I’ll have to play it again with the sound up.
@jouest @Kyeh I can catch a few words, like “infernum”.
My family (READ: I) bought a giant inflatable werewolf last year and, I gotta say, only complaint is that it is a little top-heavy, but other than that, really good.

{VMod edit: fixed the pic.}
Thank you VMOD 0v0
If I had a yard, LOL
But i do put stuff right outside the front door. (Our corridor is inside) I have some zombies on one side, and more macabre on the other.
I would like them better if they looked more realistic. The skellies. But then again… : )
I remember my daughter a number of years ago showed me where someone was selling like a 10% or something scale replica of a triceratops skeleton, one that looked like the real thing. She lamented not having a yard. she’d leave it up year round. lol.
@Cerridwyn Dinosaurs are always cool. Every time I pass the Sinclair gas station some part of my brain plots to swipe the mascot.
(Not my photo, but the size is right.)
@blaineg @Cerridwyn I took a photo with one of those in Pendleton when I moved my parents up here from Louisiana.
@blaineg @Cerridwyn We had a regional rash of people sawing the heads off Sinclair dinosaurs.
I have mixed feelings; it does seem to be a bit macabre to celebrate fossil fuels with a cutefied version of the critters that died to become it.
This is one of my favorites.
@blaineg That’s really good.

@blaineg that is epic!
@blaineg @kyeh trying to convince the Englishman that I need to do this on our house. It’s this or Jack. It needs to happen!
@blaineg love it
@blaineg @Kyeh @sillyheathen Just do it. He’ll learn to love it.
(I’m looking at this and thinking of some leftover PVC pipes I have…)
@blaineg @brainmist @Kyeh @sillyheathen
Needs to be a UPS or FedEx delivery person in the webbing!
I got an 8ft talking skeleton from Joann’s last year on clearance, but too late to put up. I connected his head to his spine to make sure it worked, so that will be neat this year.
I got this beauty during a Halloween mehrathon a couple years ago. Best 20 bucks I’ve spent!
Had to go back a couple years for a pic as I was out of town last year. Unfortunately, it was dark, so you can’t tell how big it is, but the leg span is probably the advertised 12’ and it’s easily over 6’ tall at the skull body.

This one is still my favorite; I l’d love to see it in person.

@Kyeh oh
and if left to my own devices, I would build this on my house. The Englishman would never allow it so it’s probably for the best.
@Kyeh If you’re ever in the Midwest, this is the craziest conglomeration of clutter, creepiness, and funhouse mayhem: http://www.hauntedravensgrin.com/
@brainmist Do you still do your Lizzie Borden thing?
@Kyeh not recently. I did do a reaper a few years ago.
I miss haunting, but it’s basically a fast track to catching whatever infections are going around, and whatever I caught in 2019 left me gasping for air and needing an inhaler. So with COVID, I took a pretty big step back.
@brainmist Oh, that’s a shame!
@Kyeh holy crap
