Pallet of ???
5So a gazillion years ago, legend has it, Meh sometimes sent out pallets.
Pallets of stuff.
Not good stuff. But stuff.
So two part question:
-Did you ever receive such a pallet?
-If you could receive a pallet of Meh’s worst warehoused/ got-to-get-rid-of crap? What would it be?

(For a lot of years I yammered for a pallet of Martian watches, which I coveted but I think most people ignored. That techy watch explosion was crack to me. Now? Not so much.
Now? Maybe the silly solar flower lights, that require minimal work. I got one in an IRK, and it’s nothing I’d pay for, but something I’d pole into the ground.)
@brainmist A pallet full would allow you to fill an entire yard, so yes, that would be fun!
@Kyeh I have a half acre and the boxes were fair sized, but it’s definitely fill in a lot of spaces!
@brainmist Oh, maybe not your yard!
@brainmist @Kyeh I’d be so on board to “spam” my neighborhood one night!! It’d be great fun!! Regretfully, I have a feeling my neighbors would blame me in short order, as “that’s just the kind of thing Todd would do.” (I can hear it now!)
@brainmist @tohar1 You must be a fun neighbor!
@Kyeh @tohar1 Hah, that’s the sort of thing you’d definitely want to be a bit selective about.
@brainmist @Kyeh @tohar1 I mean it’s probably good to live where they know your name. And maybe roll their eyes
Irk stuffies
But I’ve never gotten a pallet in real life.
I actually found the Roar electrolyte packets to be fine – so if there’s still a box of expired ones around …
Otherwise, I can haz pallet of catshirts?
There was once a pallet of RAM sticks.
@pakopako what, really?
@brainmist @pakopako This sounds like the first line of a story.
@Kyeh @pakopako or a limerick.
I would like to see this turned into a naughty limerick.
@brainmist @pakopako Good idea!
Lots of possibilities there …
@pakopako I do electronics recycling, so I’d be ALL OVER receiving something like this!
Okay, @brainmist - this is all your fault.
There was once a pallet of ram sticks
Which sound like they’re used for wild antics
But they’re not made to ram
Into sir or madam
No, these are just for electronics
@brainmist
https://meh.com/forum/topics/sidedeal-o-rama-irk-reveal-thread
@brainmist @Kyeh that’s um… Pretty… Graphic. What with the ramning
@brainmist @pakopako
Not exactly a pallet.
@unksol
@brainmist wanted a naughty limerick!!
@brainmist @Kyeh I saw. Got any more? Maybe q subscription service? Lol
@pakopako @tohar1 got any contact list/map for recycling ewaste? Id be happy to give you mine but probably 1000 miles away.but their is a box of electronics I cannot salvage parts and will not put straight into the trash.
@brainmist @unksol No, you come up with one now. Or someone else.
@unksol sites like Earth911 and NCER try to aggregate recycling programs. I always used big retailers like Best Buy if it was available. There’s sometimes municipal recycling that opens up monthly, usually near a city university.
https://www.epa.gov/recycle/electronics-donation-and-recycling
There’s also private companies like Waste Management who will do it (for an arm and a leg)
https://www.wm.com/us/en/business/electronics-recycling
@pakopako @unksol Thanks for making the choice to not just “throw it away”! Too few people have any issue with hoping (“Wish-cycling” is the term I’ve heard used) it becomes someone else’s problem.
Not sure where you are geographically, but I’d guess there’s an e-waste processor somewhere near you. Check out the iScrap app. Really a great resource for all types of metal recycling.
@Kyeh @unksol lol, entirely necessary for the pun!
@tohar1 @unksol I’ve heard “wish-cycling” is recycling a product that isn’t recyclable. Like how my neighbors’ grandparents would toss styrofoam egg containers in with the cardboard.
@pakopako @tohar1 don’t get me started on the crap I see in the drop off recycling. Vinyl siding. Just straight up trash… Plastic recycling is problematic anyway but ffs
@brainmist @Kyeh A+++ for the creative limerick.
@pakopako @tohar1 @unksol Wish-cycling is more like recycling a product you think/hope is recyclable but may not be (doesn’t usually apply if you know it isn’t recyclable, that’s just called being a jerk).
@brainmist @tohar1 Thank you!
I have never received a pallet but would love to and one Meh’s trash is another Meh’s treasure
Im fine with just a wooden pallet.
@Wollyhop how about a pallet of pallets?
/showme a pallet of pallets
OK… now
/showme a pallet or pallets of pallets.
I meant…
/showme a pallet of pallets of pallets
@Wollyhop They are handy. I’m kinda amazed that there’s no real push to reuse them. Just free pallets for the taking (usually after garden season).
@OnionSoup Pallet^2
@brainmist @Wollyhop We have a place that refurbishes pallets here in West Fargo. They pay $4-$6 each depending on what shape they’re in…So, if you have a good source, pile them up & make a trip to North Dakota. Your proceeds would pay for your trip.
@brainmist @Wollyhop they’d be mulched into gardening wood chips at best
I’d like to use them to create a “tree house” tool storage area in my basement if I had the time, but that’s a one use thing.
@brainmist @pakopako @Wollyhop there is alot of I made this out of pallets on the YouTube. Like with actual people vs. 5 minutes craft garbage m
Just saying if you have access to them there’s ways to use them. I do not have a local source
@brainmist @pakopako @unksol @Wollyhop I have a neighbor who has a large barn. It is a man-cave work of art - he has a large stacked pallet system to hold his stuff (all properly labelled, of course) and a small fork lift to pick the desired pallet.
At the other end is a full bar he made from a beautifully finished plank sliced from a tree. In the middle is a lift for working on vehicles and his Harley. Entertainment is provided by a nice music system.
You never want to decline an invitation from Glen!
@tohar1 @Wollyhop LOL, pretty certain they wouldn’t pay for the vehicle needed to move them…
@macromeh
@brainmist @Wollyhop Well, you could take a vacation up in beautiful ND, then justify it by getting some refund with the pallets. Win/win!
@brainmist @tohar1
How did this get so popular
@tohar1 @Wollyhop Pallets are just that versatile! Everyone likes a pallet.
@brainmist @tohar1 @Wollyhop Some pallets are intentionally built from the cheapest available barely adequate pine, and are called disposable pallets in the shipping industry. Better ones are built from oak or other hardwoods, and sometimes even carry a deposit, depending upon who you’re getting your stuff from. I know of several places here in Houston that will cheerfully buy the oak pallets, and they will often take the crappy pine ones for disposal but you don’t get anything for them.
@mikey LOL, I think I may have collectively bought the equivalent of a pallet of Buldak.
@brainmist It’s getting too popular to land on Meh again, methinks. That or the purchasers like to see us suffer.
I remember somebody got a pallet of TVs. I forget how many that turned out to be. And he was a tinkerer and he managed to I believe get two working ones out of it one that he sold. And this was back when they were $5 each. So it was definitely a score. But I believe the people that got that kind of stuff all lived fairly close to the warehouse because well you can imagine what that would cost to ship
@Cerridwyn Was that @djslack?
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh it was!
Reveal is here though the photos seem to have been lost to time. Maybe Google photos has my back.
Edit: nope, only a bunch of screenshots from Ingress. Meh.
@Cerridwyn @djslack So when you got all the way through that project, how many working TVs did you have?
@Kyeh I think it was 5 or 6. About half of the pallet. I gave a lot away. My mom still used the one I gave her until last Christmas. And this weekend I’m going to see the last one that I know where it is.
@djslack That’s great!
@djslack @Kyeh but what did it cost you to both fix one half and dispose of the other?
Back in 2006 when woot was doing it. And student in ECET if was kinda… Woot might deliver a pallet if we won. I don’t think so ever thought about what to do or where to put it
@Cerridwyn Originally I was called to get it. I had to turn it down as I had no place for a pallet to be delivered. I was told I was going to get it because I had made a working mac laptop out of two broken ones I bought for $25 each at the university surplus (took only 3 tries and I only had 2 screws leftover - this was when the mac 3 was the mac). The thought was I could figure out how to make some working TV’s out of all the broken ones. Since @djslack made some working ones from that mess that was a good second choice to get them.
@Kyeh @unksol

/giphy time
@djslack @Kyeh I suppose we could have asked a professor to use a loading dock. There was lots of empty labs/junk in the basement of the Purdue ECE building. No one ever went down there. Certainly would have been… Interesting
Lol there was BATH.
And the woot pallets. The meh pallets seemed like they would be cool but actually a ton of garbage or worse…ewaste… someon0e had to pay to haul away. Little more meh 20 years later
Good stories
@unksol Oh, BATH was very cool.
Not already mentioned I think someone (or a couple of someones) got a pallet of seizure glasses (not what they really were called but what meh members named them). And I think someone got near enough of a pallet of huge women’s underwear. There was more stuff than that though that came on pallets to a few “lucky” people’s doors.
@Kidsandliz …why were they called seizure glasses? (Police seizure?)
@Kidsandliz @pakopako Eye glasses, but I can’t remember what the gimmick was (I wasn’t around that early, but I saw them once.)
@pakopako IF I recall correctly they had a warning on them that they could cause seizures.
I didn’t get a pallet myself from Woot, but they did send me a box of “massagers”, gold bungie cord lanyards , and boxes of Polaroid DSi docks .
A bunch of us were blessed with DSi Docks at one point from Woot
@stryper2000 Hi, @acraigl!
I’ve had stuff shipped to me on pallets more than a few times, but nothing that couldn’t be unstrapped and wrangled out of the end of the trailer or truck by hand. So far, nothing has needed a liftgate. And it’s not like I’ve got a truck height dock and a forklift.
