@haydesigner @shahnm My personal belief is that the whole “President may pardon people” is not a good thing. It blurs the line between the branches of government, and gives the President a power which he doesn’t need to perform his job. He is not judicial. It’s an untidy oversight that invites politicians to abuse it, no matter which side of the political divide they come from. No political office should have more power than it needs to perform it’s duties.

I feel like the whole office of presidency has bloated in power from what was originally intended (and I’m not blaming any individual or party here)… Executive Orders are abused by both sides and all presidents these days. The President was never meant to be a legislative office either, yet it has taken on more and more of such a role over the years.

The bloat in power of the Presidency over what was originally intended, is not a good thing for democracy. I’m not just saying that because Trump is in office, I felt that way when Biden and Obama were in office too. (although they scared me less)

The only problem is, it would probably require a President-in-office who sees it as a problem, to close the loopholes… and no President is going to work in favor of limiting their own power.

His sentence was extreme because his prosecutors decided to be his persecutors based upon his politics. That double standard cannot be allowed in our judicial system.

Just because you don’t like someone or their views does not mean you can punish them more aggressively. Just because someone is aligned with your political views does not mean you can be lenient or look the other way.

“BREAKING,” the bogus GOP account tweeted. “#VoterFraud by counting tens of thousands of ineligible mail in Hillary votes being reported in Broward County, Florida.”

That precise tweet was among a handful attributed to Internet Research Agency accounts and included in Friday’s indictment charging 13 Russian nationals and three companies, including the aforementioned troll farm and its employees, for allegedly defrauding the United States and interfering in the 2016 race using “information warfare.”

“The defendants allegedly posed as U.S. persons, created false U.S. personas and operated social media pages and groups designed to attract U.S. audiences,” the indictment said.

“Starting in or around the summer of 2016, Defendants and their co-conspirators also began to promote allegations of voter fraud by the Democratic Party through their fictitious U.S. personas and groups on social media,” according to the indictment.

Indeed, Twitter announced in January that the social network detected and deleted more than 3,000 accounts likely operated by the Internet Research Agency, including the bogus GOP account, among others. Tweets published by those accounts have been purged from Twitter, however, complicating efforts to retroactively gauge the reactions they garnered.

Nonetheless, existing news reports suggest the Russian troll account may have made an impression beyond just The Gateway Pundit. On the afternoon of Nov. 2, for example, Florida GOP Chairman Blaise Ingoglia sent a letter to the state Supervisor of Elections, writing: “I have been advised that tens of thousands of vote-by-mail ballots in Broward County are being opened by your staff.”

“NEWS ALERT,” Fox News tweeted afterward. “GOP alleges voter fraud in Broward County, Florida.”

Neither Mr. Ingolia nor Mr. Hoft immediately returned emails seeking comment Saturday.

The Gateway Pundit’s role in propagating the baseless voter fraud claim was first reported by the liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America.

Launched in 2004, Gateway Pundit has previously been criticized for its often far-right and occasionally unsubstantiated reporting, including as recently as earlier this week when its credentialed White House correspondent, Lucian Wintrich, circulated a bogus Buzzfeed article titled “Why We Need To Take Away White People’s Guns Now, More Than Ever.”

A Fox News Radio correspondent confronted in the White House briefing room the White House reporter for a website that traffics in conspiracy theories, witnesses said on Friday.

As reporters were getting settled ahead of Friday’s briefing, the Fox correspondent Jon Decker pointed out that a reporter from Gateway Pundit, Lucian Wintrich, was in the room and that they “hate blacks, Jews, Hispanics,” according to BuzzFeed White House correspondent Adrian Carrasquillo, who tweeted about the incident.

Decker also sent an email to the entire White House reporter email listserv, noting that the White House “has admitted Gateway Pundit into today’s White House Press Briefing.”

While some in the White House briefing room say the White House should be open to any and all outlets, others have expressed concern with certain outlets being legitimized via their White House credentials.

Fox News confirmed Decker was reacting to previous tweets Wintrich had posted. According to a White House Correspondent in the room, several reporters shook Decker’s hands as he walked back to the Fox News radio booth.

"Props to Jon Decker for speaking up in the press room. It would be much harder for a minority reporter to speak up like he did,” the correspondent said. "As a member of the WHCA board and as a white man him standing up and saying that meant a lot to reporters in the room.”

Shortly after the interaction, Gateway Pundit published a post claiming that Decker grabbed Wintrich’s arm, assaulted him and shouted that he was a Nazi and that The Gateway Pundit “is a white supremacist publication.” Decker and Fox News deny that any sort of assault occurred. Another White House correspondent who witnessed the incident said no physical altercation occurred.

“Earlier today I had a conversation with a representative from the online publication Gateway Pundit," Decker said in a statement. "The conversation was straightforward and direct. I also informed the full White House pool that this representative was present in the Briefing Room. At no time did I accost or assault this individual. More than a dozen witnesses will attest to this fact.”

Gateway Pundit, a pro-Donald Trump conservative blog known for at times posting false rumors, gained notice earlier this year when they announced they would be appointing a White House correspondent with official White House press credentials. While there are several interesting characters and self-described reporters who appear daily in the briefing room, the Gateway Pundit’s inclusion has rankled some White House reporters who see them as an inappropriate addition to the briefing room.

"‘Telling the truth’ is not, by any objective measure, what the Gateway Pundit does. If you have a conspiracy theory or a hoax you want to spread, Hoft is your guy,” Callum Borchers wrote in the Washington Post in January.

Wintrich often posts memes and symbols related to the ‘alt-right’ and some white supremacist groups. He has made and tweeted certain controversial statements, such as a tweet stating that “Women’s suffrage was one of the country’s greatest disasters”, and directly targeted other writers, including at one point posting and then deleting a Mic.com writer’s personal information.

The site, Gateway Pundit, is known for posting questionable stories at times, such as some stories about Hillary Clinton’s health during the election and falsely accused a Washington Post editor of photographing written notes of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during a confirmation hearing. The journalist, who was not at the briefing, was harassed online and via phone as a result. (Gateway Pundit eventually updated their post).

I had a high level security clearance and the amount of incompetence and waste I saw was egregious. The contractors did all the work. The big fed chess pieces would just be moved from spot to spot when audits showed their failures. Then I spent 12 years working in life sciences. Big pharma and the FDA aren’t any better.

Heck, my dad held a very senior position at HUD rebuilding inner-cities for 25 years and my sister has been with the State Department living around the world for 15 years mostly in Turkey and the middle east. But I also like principles, integrity, and facts.
As much as I would like to see the federal government shrink, and I do sincerely believe that it has plenty of room to shrink, I do not appreciate the cavalier methodology being employed. There is no serious examination or attention to detail.
I can trim my household budget by cutting out oil changes, but I know enough to know what a terrible idea that is. I don’t really trust these guys to bother to know what they’re cutting until serious damage is done.

I used to believe that such an examined approach would be ideal on the much larger scale of our government and its programs and sprawl into every element of life. I since have come to believe that fire and brimstone is the only way that will make a dent. There are far too many with far too vested a personal interest in the status quo for anything less to make even a scratch.

That Trump happened to tap into that (apparently growing) sentiment is the product of our having reached critical mass as a functional country and republic. Perhaps you’re right, and Trump’s way will end in catastrophe. We’re heading toward (perhaps already at) catastrophe now. It just looks a little different and is comforting in the sense that we’re used to what this version of catastrophe looks like.

I’m open to the chance that the changes to come will be a net and much needed positive for the nation - that we’ll leave our kids something that still offers them a shot at the proverbial American dream.

So what do you care about Moldova? Well Moldova only exists as a separate country from Romania because Russia opposed reunification. Romania and Moldova see themselves as one people and generally see themselves as one nation temporarily divided. Russia wants to own Moldova again. If Russia attacks Moldova, Romania will defend.

Romania is member of NATO… even if you support Trump or his master Putin, you might be able to see why this is problematic.

Russia also wants to take back control of the Baltic (more NATO allies). $70 billion is a small price to pay to prevent World War Three.

Caesar didn’t stop expansion after 3 wars. Alexander didn’t. Napolean didn’t stop after taking three countries. Hitler didn’t.

Here’s a thought, though: I (and many millions of us), want Trump, Musk, DOGE, Santa Claus, Whoever! - to cut the fuck out of the federal leviathan. Cut and destroy as much of the rotted disgusting overgrowth that should never have infested American government and politics in the first place. Cut mercilessly and brutally when necessary. Cut the living fuck out of this overgrown government until it starts looking and acting like a constitutional republic.

In the process, I give zero fucks if some things temporarily get broken. I give zero fucks if some things get accidentally cut that might better be put back. Easy to fix those problems. Very, very hard to cut anything in the first place. For the first time in my life, someone is actually doing it.

I know this might give you less to do in editing our posts and certainly some of my adversaries might have very little substantive to say then, but even my impending death and senility (according to Ignorant Dude) some at least appreciate my willingness share my knowledge acquired via being a CPA for over 50 years to answer tax questions especially now that approx 7,000 IRS jobs have been eliminated right in the middle of tax season.

So I vote to eliminate this thread.

@shahnm Bull Shit. In recent years the IRS has audited less than 1% of all individual tax returns and concentrated tax compliance on high income tax earners and large corporations.

Cutting staff only helps Trump and Musk’s rich friends-the ones most likely to cheat on their returns and avoid paying their fair share.

Musk has already shown he has no idea who is letting go in every agency he has attacked. He is just trying to please Trump and make like he is doing something useful. He isn’t-wait until the shit hits the fan and it will sooner than later and it will land where it belongs-all over Trump.

@shahnm You obviously have both limited knowledge of and/or experience in how most CPAs earn a living. Most of their and and my income comes from doing corporate returns and other entity (partnership/LLC, non-profit, Sub-S returns) and tax planning. And most of the individual returns I do are for the owners of the company for which I do their business returns. I can make 20 or 30 times more doing one business tax return and related state returns as opposed to doing one individual return.

@Felton10 @shahnm Does any of your “expertise” involve helping these wealthy corporations and their owners in securing off-shore bank accounts and create bogus businesses or “charities” to hide their actual assets to avoid paying taxes??

@IndifferentDude @shahnm As a sole practioner, those type of clients are out of my league. Best client for a number of years was a school over in Rome and had to fly over there for Board meetings periodically.

Forgot to mention that a good part of my practice or most practices are preparing financial statements for clients-compilation, reviews and audits. Audits are really good paying but entail a high degree of risk so professional liability insurance is a must. Also had to go through peer review every couple of years in order to renew my CPA license and do financial statements (primarily audits) where I had to hire a CPA to come in and examine random files to determine that I performed the proper procedures to be able to issue those reports and my files documented the procedures I performed.
