I’ve seen a bunch of articles pop up lately with just the date and not the year listed. Especially for an upcoming eclipse two years from now! Made it look like it was going to be this year because it has no year listed just Aug 2…
When told that Ozzy was on the bill to perform at one of the late Queen’s celebratory events, the late Queen asked if he were planning to bite the head off a bat on stage …
she remarked that surely once bat biting incident on stage was sufficient for a lifetime.
She was assured that the planned performance would be bat-free.
Her staff asked her how she even knew about that. Her reply was something to the effect of “how could anyone who pays any attention to the world not know about that?”
Supposedly she had a fondness for him, or (given that she didn’t know him in their respective private lives), for, at least, his “public performance personality”.

@ItalianScallion@shahnm I cant speak to that, and I won’t go down that path. All I can say is he was kind and polite when I met him. He was a true pleasure to hang out with and it made my wait for our 6am-ish flight pleasurable.

@Cerridwyn I can’t think of anyone on TV who brought more personality and intelligence to a role that was intended to be mainly eye candy. And seemed to me that she was that way in real life.
[I liked Burt, but think he was an idiot, or at least he tended to act like one.]
@Cerridwyn@Kyeh
I always liked WKRP. Couple of years ago I introduced my son to the series. Somehow it had never been on his radar. We watched several episodes together and I was reminded how great the characters were. Along with Northern Exposure it is probably one of my favorite “quirky character driven” comedies. And yes, Loni was a gem in that show…
@Cerridwyn Read several stories about what a genuinely nice person she was also, for those working with and around her. She had to get private due to her insane popularity for a while though which lead some to think she was stuck up.
@Cerridwyn I noticed that, too, and i concur. Google always has to “fix” what isn’t broken, like the recent “improvement” in my camera app. They happened to change one of the few features i actually use, and not for the better. Grrr. (And you kids stay off my damn lawn!!)

@mbersiam I hadn’t heard that he died because we had a local shooting at a high school and that’s what’s been dominating the news here. I had the news on when they announced “breaking news” alert about Charlie Kirk getting shot in Utah.

@werehatrack Oh no! (I still think it’ll all be on archive.org unless/until they are sued into oblivion.)
@mossygreen @werehatrack My dad told me about Tom Lehrer and I spent my newspaper delivery money on his albums and a turntable. (Flanders and Swann too.). I was an odd child.
@mossygreen Given that Mr. Lehrer explicitly placed them in the public domain, anyone can post them for download. But now that he’s gone, there is no certainty that his website will stay up, and there is a warning on it advising that at some point, it will go away.
@werehatrack I swear I am not arguing with you. It must feel like I am, but that is not my intent. You are doing important work encouraging people to download his music.

@MrGoodGuy RIP Ryno
. Thanks for the memories, there are a lot.
️
Remembering the good old days when the Cubs and Braves were on TV every single day…just realized how much I miss all those day games.
Say hi to Harry (and Skip, Ernie, Pete and Don Sutton).
Mick Ralphs… Founding member of both Bad Company and Mott the Hoople has passed away (on Monday the 28th of July) – Always did love that band name Mott the Hoople…

Dahlmeier was climbing a mountain in Pakistan when she was struck and killed by falling rocks on Monday. Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, sent a distress signal to authorities, but low visibility and bad weather made it difficult for rescuers to reach the remote area."

@Cerridwyn Oh wow!
@Cerridwyn I can’t think of anyone on TV who brought more personality and intelligence to a role that was intended to be mainly eye candy. And seemed to me that she was that way in real life.
[I liked Burt, but think he was an idiot, or at least he tended to act like one.]
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh
I always liked WKRP. Couple of years ago I introduced my son to the series. Somehow it had never been on his radar. We watched several episodes together and I was reminded how great the characters were. Along with Northern Exposure it is probably one of my favorite “quirky character driven” comedies. And yes, Loni was a gem in that show…
@Cerridwyn Farewell to Her Blondness.
@Cerridwyn Read several stories about what a genuinely nice person she was also, for those working with and around her. She had to get private due to her insane popularity for a while though which lead some to think she was stuck up.

I do hate the way Google has been doing shares now.
@zhicks1987 Fuck quarter 3. Fuck it with a habanero-crusted, flaming, sideways pinecone.
RIP Jim Lovell…
@shahnm @zhicks1987 Only .01% of US men make it to 97. And only 0.000004% of the U.S. population has been to the moon. I’d say he lived a full life…
@shahnm @zhicks1987
@macromeh–I agree!
@Cerridwyn I noticed that, too, and i concur. Google always has to “fix” what isn’t broken, like the recent “improvement” in my camera app. They happened to change one of the few features i actually use, and not for the better. Grrr.
(And you kids stay off my damn lawn!!)
@zhicks1987
When Lovell commanded the Christmas mission in 1968, he (famously) had a Neiman Marcus employee arrive at his house in a limo on Christmas morning. The employee brought gifts for the family an a gorgeous fur coat for his wife.
Apparently the live broadcast Bible reading was initiated and agreed upon by the crew. They arranged it.
@zhicks1987
Here on Wikipedia is a recording of the initial “problem” report to Houston from Apollo 13, as well as the history of the phrase becoming a meme for well-controlled great understatement under stress.

Lovel didn’t command the Xmas 1968 flight. He commanded Apollo 13.
I think.

Decorated WWII Veteran Considered America’s Last Surviving ‘Ace’ Pilot Dies at 103
The U.S. World War II veteran considered the last surviving “ace” pilot died on August 14 in his home state of Nebraska at the age of 103.
"Veteran and American hero Donald McPherson served his country as a Navy pilot of F6F Hellcat fighters aboard the USS Essex in the Pacific, Fox News reported on Saturday.
The American Fighter Aces Association and the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum recognized him as the last surviving American ace pilot during that war, the article said, noting the fact he shot down several Japanese planes during the conflict meant he was considered an “ace” pilot…"

One of Bear Bryant’s favorite players.

I saw him play professionally often in person, when I could afford the tickets (at student prices).
He played back before most NFL players had such swelled salaries and egos to match. He was much the gentleman (when not knocking runners down on the field).

@mbersiam I hadn’t heard that he died because we had a local shooting at a high school and that’s what’s been dominating the news here. I had the news on when they announced “breaking news” alert about Charlie Kirk getting shot in Utah.
Then in the middle of that they broke in with a LOCAL breaking news alert about a reported shooter at a high school in Evergreen, CO.
3 kids went to hospital.
I’ve never had national “breaking news” interrupted by local “breaking news” before. Crazy. Terrible.
@Kyeh oh my
