Seeking “Perfect Song” nominees. What are your favs?
3Brothers In Arms” (by Dire Straits) was mentioned by @haydesigner as a potential “perfect song” within @blaineg’s topic
https://meh.com/forum/topics/i-dont-beleive-you
/youtube brothers in arms dire straits.
OK, that’s a very respectable nomination
But that mentioned “perfect song” category didn’t mention a music genre and so that’s a lot of room for great songs within the world history of music.
And there are damn lot of good songs (and I’m v happy about that).
—
Criteria: you never get tired of hearing it
(Also having a great bass line helps)

Some very obvious non rock and roll contenders might be

/youtube stardust Aaron Neville

—
If we narrow down to just popular music or rock we still have so damned many options or perfection or near perfection

So what are your prefs for some perfect songs or near perfect songs?
Whether these songs are “we’ve heard that one way too much” or “super deep cut” or in between?

Ok trying to load this topic is making my phone heat up.
Ouch.
@f00l blows on servers
@jouest
Switched to better device.
; )
Btw that final video is Garth Brooks and veterans performing “goodnight Saigon” at the Kennedy Center Billy Joel tribute concert.
Damn, tricky topic.
Beethoven’s Fifth might be technically correct in terms of structure and scope? But also, like…I don’t care.
Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car is it for me. That is a song. I wish I could justify this better.
Also Smells Like Teen Spirit is a perfect execution of what it was trying to be.
Honorable mentions on the rock side: Paint it Black, Stairway to Heaven, and Paradise City.
@jouest
All those are just what I wanted to hear from you degenerates.
I’m looking for the ones that are obviously great and still catch the heart after so many decades.
I also wouldn’t mind a few “new listens”
For that classical category (there are endless possibilities )
i’d add
adagio for strings
Mozarts requiem
Beethoven’s D major violin cincerto
@jouest
And yeah Fast Car
/youtube fast car grammies
my taste in music is, well, eclectic, as those of you who remember my goatdom might remember. So here are some of my choices, old and hew
@Cerridwyn
/youtube arethra franklin respect
@Cerridwyn
/youtube peter paul and mary don’t laugh at me
couldn’t figure out how to pull this one up
@Cerridwyn
Aretha took that song right away from Otis. He conceded as much as soon as he heard her do it.
He didn’t seem to mind.
; )
/youtube Coltrane ascension
I can’t answer this in one response, because it’s going to take some thought …
I agree that The Stones Gimme Shelter is GREAT, one of the best ever, but not sure I’d want it to be the only song I could listen to forever.
Like in the Colbert Questionnaire.
One that I love a lot is
So much better than Stairway to Heaven.
This thread is already getting hard to load, at least on a phone.
@Kyeh
yeah
This kind of topic really needs pagination option instead of infinite scroll
@f00l Can you start a part 2?
Dave Brubeck - Take 5
Oh and @f00l, thanks to all these imbedded videos, this post is basically a cyberweapon. I think you just pushed an aging iPad into retirement after slightly burning my hand.
Ok part 2 is here
