It looked like they spent more effort making the ship pretty than making it a good reliable spaceworthy ship and safe for its apparent purpose of being the academy training vessel… but ooooh pretty special effects".
And all the little droidbots floating around made it feel more star wars than Trek…
There are mixed opinions about old trek anyway. I loved DS9. Glare if you must. But grew up with TNG adjusting the antenna and asking not to go to bed.
I don’t dislike Enterprise.
Some of the discovery shenanigans I… Question…
But assuming any of you have kept up and I have a month or three cause free trials or credit card offers.
Is there a watch order? Or are they all unlinked? A general “because of the battle of woof 460” meh. That’s fine I’ll Google it.
Does the captain have a speech impediment or just an accent? Like her upper lip doesn’t move… Something’s going on there. Pretty distracting because I was trying to figure it out the whole time.
I just watched The first episode pretty good. I had forgot all about it, and also section 31. At the Sci FI card I was at in some of the panels. They reminded me about both of them.
Man, “they” are really ripping on this series. The audience reviews are generally terrible but I’m more ambivalent about it.
“People” are saying it’s not real Star Trek, but seriously, I ask you, how many more existential threats can there be? Week after week after week of space creatures gets boring.
So lets do some interesting characters, I get it, although why there is someone in a wheelchair in that day and age is puzzling considering Jordie got his sight back and whatnot, like Picard downloading his existence into a machine. Seems to me to be anachronistic for that far into the future.
I’m going to give it a little longer and see what happens. Maybe it will turn out to be Friends or 21 Jump Street in spaaace. But I’m not throwing in the towel just yet.
@Cerridwyn Yeah, I’ve noticed a preponderance of meletonin-blessed crew, that’s for sure, and just par for the course nowadays in Hollyweird. But at least they’ve got some hot, white, women to balance it out.
So there’s a lesbian instructor? Horrors. Because I’m not 12 years old other people’s sexuality is none of my business. Besides, they haven’t really said she is, but IYKYK.
The only extraneous character I see is that DEI hire instructor to monitor “teaching moments” but I’m sure she’s a hero to public school teachers everywhere lol.
It’s really too early to say if this show is going to pan out. I haven’t really seen anything overtly “woke” anyway.
@therealjrn I would just like to point out that Geordi only got actual “sight” back in one of the movies I believe. With brand new just developed retinal implants. And it was well established that his brain had to learn to read the electromagnetic spectrum his visor created, and it caused chronic pain that he just had to deal with.
It’s perfectly reasonable that a severe spinal injury, or areas of brain damage would be either beyond them or not worth the risk to some people. Or. Very specifically. They would refuse on moral grounds because of how the knowledge was obtained…
Which is absolutely a plot point used in TNG era trek.
TOS has some very questionable episodes but ST has by its very nature been “woke”.
Just gonna skip the “meletonin” bit since half of a normal ships crew would be literally aliens. Ya know. What with the whole learning not to be fucking ass holes plot line that is the back bone of ST.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And honestly I wouldn’t have brought this back up except scishow literally just released a video on the pernkopt atlas. Right after I mentioned the startrek thing… And I didn’t know it was called that at all or that it took this form of text books. Just that they abused prisoners… And the kind of moral dilemma. May be worth a watch if your into history. I thought it was pretty well done
@therealjrn lol I was sure you’d sort it out and if anyone was interested in the scishow video, which is by its nature a little dark they would look him up if wanted. Who knows who’s gonna scrape meh with a dumb AI

Yes, we mustn’t forget the historical value of some poor doctorial student scraping the meh.com forums for clues to our late-stage-capitalism collapse.
As a disabled person I might enlighten some of you as to why even with ‘modern’ technology a person might still need a mobility device. Take someone like Stephen Hawking, they may have a degenerative disorder that hasn’t been cured yet; prognosis is that they’ll just keep losing the ability to self propel, movement limits that scientists have yet to find any solution for. Remember Captain Kirk used eyeglasses because they weren’t sure the corrective surgery would work. People with bodily differences don’t always want to be ‘fixed’. They’ve lived that way for years and accepted who they are. They just want you to see them as people! Just my opinion from this side of the fence.
Well with patience and empathy I watched the third episode and I gotta say I found it enjoyable. I think for me, I’m a little burned out on the “old” Star Trek vibes. It’s better to just go in and enjoy it as a standalone thing.
I’m also developing a perfectly reasonable, age-appropriate crush on Holly Hunter. She’s the bee’s knees, meow.
I find a lot to like about this new series. I don’t recall if Colbert’s “Academy Digital Dean” voice appeared in that ep, but I’ll be listening for it in future.
Have seen some user reviews claiming there’s a feel of today-contemporary cultural “high school slang street talk” and “high school level angst” about the stories.
Which some viewers find off-putting.
So to those of you who’ve watched:
Is this a possible problem for the series?
When a fictional universe starts to sprawl, there are always challenges:
How to make it different enough to be non-repetitive and distinct while still feeling like a genuine and intrinsic part of the overall saga?
How to make it good enough that it doesn’t start to just feel like a producer’s money grab?
@f00l language is what it is. Kirk talked different from Picard because the shows were filmed in different areas not just their personalities. I’m sure that 18 to 22-year-olds will have their own slang if you will thousand years or 10,000 years. So they just translated into something that we can understand. The trolls will make an issue of it. Because they’re trolls. The same is true with Holly Hunters Way of sitting on the bridge. You think she was part cat. But she is really a little tiny person and she stands up next to those men some of them are very big she looks even smaller. And they’ve worked on perspective to make that look even different. And make your own opinion don’t listen to the tiktokers
@Cerridwyn@f00l I consider myself a fan, and I’m satisfied enough. But there does seem to be some opposition to the different more recent Star Trek series. I’m not going to enumerate the complaints. I’m just going to enjoy the show while it lasts.
@mehrrychristmas watch them all. You probably will enjoy some shows in each of them. And you won’t enjoy all of them in all of them. But all of them have fun components. And I’m glad you like it
Pics or ban!!
@yakkoTDI almost still text out there show for either on the academy where she docks in San francisco, or with her wings tucked in
Here’s the premier for free!

Universe altering stuff

@medz interwebs say she has a hearing impairment which contributes to the way she speaks.

/giphy the-more-you-know
@medz OMG SHE MUST BE DEI.
Cue the unhinged people…

@therealjrn Stephen Miller said it’s too woke, it doesn’t have enough white men in it. Best reason to watch it if you don’t want to watch it. LOL

)
I think you mean “melanin”.
(Unless you mean the show is so dull that it puts you to sleep?
@macromeh @therealjrn lol yeah that’s a bad brain misfire. I should have corrected the original mistake
Mea culpa
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@macromeh @therealjrn @unksol Well, it was realjrn’s mistake originally …
@Kyeh @macromeh @therealjrn eh we can share the blame on the spelling. The objection to brown people in star Trek is not me. And Sisko kicks ass so.
@macromeh @therealjrn @unksol Oh, I know you’re not anti-melanin.
Anti-melatonin, maybe - because I see you posting here way into the wee hours!
@Kyeh @macromeh @unksol
Thank you so much!
You always help us keep it all straight! Lol.
@macromeh @therealjrn @unksol Someone’s gotta keep you class clowns in line …

@Kyeh @macromeh @therealjrn careful with that. Some people have fetishes.
@macromeh @therealjrn @unksol
@therealjrn while I’m sure paramount is not playing this angle. Reasons to refuse treatment/be in a wheelchair. In this case the pernkopt atlas in cardassian form.

@therealjrn Pernkopf
Just for accuracy.
Not sure why my brain parsed pt instead of pf
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Pernkopf
I knew what you meant, no worries
@therealjrn lol I was sure you’d sort it out and if anyone was interested in the scishow video, which is by its nature a little dark they would look him up if wanted. Who knows who’s gonna scrape meh with a dumb AI

Well I know what I’m watching this evensong.
@sillyheathen Ohh! Enjoy!

And of course I wanted to put it in and realized we no longer have paramount.
@sillyheathen I think I have it on my American Express card for a few months. If you have the same offer.
Haven’t seen any of this yet.

@Cerridwyn
Aside from Melani’s The Do Not Care Club, I have never listened to the TikTokers.
: )
And I figured I would get far more intelligent responses asking here than by commenting on some social-media-lowest-common-denominator outlet.
@Cerridwyn @f00l
Of course it is. Hollywood is a money grab, by and large, that’s what it’s all about.
But you should watch the show for yourself, see what you think.
@Cerridwyn @therealjrn
Of course they are all money grabs.
I just want those expanded fictional universe saga extensions to be good enough that the fans are happy about it.
@Cerridwyn @f00l I consider myself a fan, and I’m satisfied enough. But there does seem to be some opposition to the different more recent Star Trek series. I’m not going to enumerate the complaints. I’m just going to enjoy the show while it lasts.
I love this new show. I was a TNG growing up. I need to watch DS9 and Picard,
@mehrrychristmas watch them all. You probably will enjoy some shows in each of them. And you won’t enjoy all of them in all of them. But all of them have fun components. And I’m glad you like it
