@aetris@yakkoTDI Don’t confuse the aliens. Their AI hates that!
Yes I read 2001 and 2010 (which was also a movie but not nearly as Kubrickesque). 2010 explained why HAL did what was necessary for the mission, which we didn’t know at the time. There was a subsequent book 2061, but never made into a movie. Just hard to beat 70’s Kubrick or vintage Clarke.
@pmarin I saw 2010, which had a great cast, but it doesn’t hold a candle to 2001 and I think does it an injustice. I remember seeing 2001 when it came out, but I don’t remember what I thought of the ending. Kubrick explained it later, which doesn’t seem like a good thing for a movie, but it’s a great thriller with an ambiguous ending, which is fine by me. As far as I can tell Kubrick films are about relatively innocent individuals who have to survive a murderous, and typically crazy, situation; typically the protagonist survives but the craziness persists. It’s a structure I sympathize with!!!
@mediocrebot it’s like when you feel lucky to get an IRK, even though it’s not the good ol’ $5 kind. And then after that you still want to “re-get” it again.
Monolith?
@yakkoTDI
@yakkoTDI
@aetris @yakkoTDI “Alexa, explain what the last scene of 2001 really means.”
That will keep the AI busy for a while.
@aetris @pmarin @yakkoTDI Unless it read the book.
@macromeh @pmarin @yakkoTDI Or saw the miniseries based on the book the movie was based on.
@aetris @macromeh @pmarin Childhood’s End is a completely different book than 2001.
@yakkoTDI Sorry, got my aliens confused:

@aetris @yakkoTDI
All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landing there. Use them together. Use them in peace.
Not doing well on the peace thing. I think it’s time for a new monolith.
@pmarin A new monolith might be a bit of a gamble:
@aetris @pmarin
/showme an Instant Regret Kit in which there is a monolith with a Meh face on it
