I vary them based on my mood each day. I keep hoping that one of them will give me a Wordle in 1 guess, but it hasn’t happened yet. I do still tend to use the more common letters most of the time though.
STEAL. I was using STALE until the day I randomly decided to use a different word and the word was STALE. After that I used SLATE until that was the word of the day.

If STALE doesn’t return any green or yellow letters CHOIR is next, and if that doesn’t BUMPY is third.
I’m trying to get my 2 guess number higher than the 6 guess one l. Currently it’s 13 behind.
And, if you’re 5 guesses in and there are multiple options for the last one you may not use another web browser to get another 6 tries, then come back to continue your Wordle streak. That would be cheating.
Many of you have solid strategies for quick solves, but in most of these cases, you’re ensuring you’ll never get a 1 or 2. There are a few sites out there that have a list of all previous winning words. You can use that to build a starting trio of words that haven’t ever been used, so you get vowels, and such, figured out quickly, but also give yourself a chance to “win” as well. Just some food for thought.
@ExtraMedium Woohoo! What was the word? For the 1 guess, I mean.
That’s quite the amazing streak. I do hate being stuck with the multiple possibilities, when you have all the other 4 or 5! Which word was that one?
I use hard mode too, although sometimes I wonder why.
I use either STERN or STEAL and my husband always starts with READS.
I’m generally more impressed with someone who gets it in 2. Getting it on the first try is really cool and all…but it’s just a random lucky guess.
I feel like getting it in 2 (or even 3) usually requires at least a little bit of decoding skills. It depends on if you value luck over skill. (That being said, I did get it on the first try once and was super happy, lol!)
@k4evryng@ExtraMedium Just curious - for the ones you got on the first try, did the bot give a 0 for skill, since it IS pure luck? Or did it rate you highly? I find it pretty aggravating when it rates me low because it claims I was lucky. Hey, I put some thought into it! (I shouldn’t check the ratings but I can’t resist.)
@Kyeh I didn’t even know there were ratings, lol! I just do the puzzle, and share it in our family wordle chat. I don’t do it every day, but I really should! My brain needs the exercise!
@Kyeh I have absolutely no idea. It was a long time ago…but if I had to guess, it was stern or steal. I rarely play anymore, although my husband and kids still play daily.
They’ve recently got me back into playing Words With Friends (which I suck at). I don’t like to play my husband because he averages like 500 points per game and I’m lucky to break 350-400.
@k4evryng Oh, I used to use STERN as an opening word fairly often & I was mad when it ended being the winning word on a day I didn’t use it.
Coincidentally, my friend just texted me today to say she got it in 1! And the bot gave her an 80 for skill, which is interesting. I thought maybe it would give zero since it always rates me down if it thinks I was “lucky.” And getting in 1 is pure luck!
Do you do Connections?
I don’t know whether to thank you or be mad at you. I feel like I should have been able to do much, much better…but I failed miserably. I need to start playing this because it’s definitely good for exercising my brain! Thanks!! I think…
We used to play Contexto a long time ago. It’s hard. It’s like a word association game I guess? I wasn’t very good at this one either, lol!
How to play
Find the secret word. You have unlimited guesses.
The words were sorted by an artificial intelligence algorithm according to how similar they were to the secret word.
After submitting a word, you will see its position. The secret word is number 1.
The algorithm analyzed thousands of texts. It uses the context in which words are used to calculate the similarity between them.
@k4evryng I haven’t played Contexto, but it sounds similar to Semantle, which is the hardest word game I’VE ever played! I had to quit because it took up too much time. Now I frustrate myself with Spelling Bee.
But I really like Connections! You’ll get better at it. If you’re on Instagram, Wyna Liu, the puzzle maker, has a page and one of her posts is “3Connections Tips,” which is helpful.
(@jouest is really good at it, I think he’s said.)
Currently I’m using “stare.” Today (1/15) was a 3/6 day.

I tried Wordle once. Found it kind of boring.

@algae1221 Wait … What…
Crane, South, Plied
PURGE, EARTH, or ADIEU depending on the day.
A word that is reflective of the day or current mood.
@user87416901 but “MEH” is only 3 letters.

@ExtraMedium Have you gotten it in 1 guess?
@Kyeh @Kyeh Once in the 1838 games played.

The game that broke my streak last week had like 14 possible words with the same last 4 letters. Still mad about that.
Worth noting that I play on “hard mode,” so I’m stuck with successful letters and can’t use “waste words” just to collect possible letters.

@ExtraMedium I guess that depends on how dedicated you are to ruling out previous words.
I’ve been doing wordle offshoots like https://crosswordle.vercel.app/ or https://referdle.com/ for a while, and I generally accept I compete against myself.
Stare is my first go to. Then if there are no hits on those letters, my next one is chunk
@ironcheftoni I did stare/hound/milky for a long time.
I use adieu, that usually find the vowels
Then it’s all about the consonants
I use either STERN or STEAL and my husband always starts with READS.
