@DrunkCat@haydesigner I’ve begun to wonder if it’s a case of projection, though I can’t for the life of me figure out why Meh gets targeted so forcefully. I’m slightly curious if this “love” gets shared around to other websites or communities.
@DrunkCat@haydesigner seems obvious? it’s just a protest against meh probably now or in the future using AI to lay someone off or pay them less. Someone who was a creative talent and part of the charm that makes meh a little unique and better than places like woot.
And if that isn’t the situation then ask yourself why not just keep doing it the old way? It’s not like anyone thinks “oh yes this AI slop is way more enjoyable than the crappy photoshops or punny writeups”.
I don’t know if I strongly agree with this or not but I think I’ve given the argument accurate representation. I guess for the picture I don’t care much… because I suspect whoever did photoshops that wasn’t their main job at all and the AI slop just made it easier on them. But replacing writeups with AI is an objectively worse change IMO, at that point the vibe is just too walmarty.
The best would be if he has been using AI to automatically write and post these daily AI complaint messages…
@bobthenormal@DrunkCat@haydesigner
In a way, Meh replaced skilled digital artists, writers, marketers that a typical retail website would have by using quirky crapiness as their branding. Replacing the crappy photoshops and write-ups with crappy AI art and ChatGPT feels as on-brand and artificial to me as the intentional, self-degrading humor.
@DVDBZN@haydesigner
Yeah. That’s the part that would legitimize the daily rant (though “AI” is really a broad brush to print with… There are myriad practical and beneficial uses)
@DrunkCat idk why people are against you here. The coal powered plagiarism, as you do perfectly put it, is crappy, alienating, and actively bad for the environment. It’s made me feel, to me, much less like a fun welcoming quirky little community store, and more like any other random deal a day website.
Someone said why he upset at such an “innocuous” use of AI? Well, there is no innocuous use. It’s all bad for the environment and it’s all bad for humanity and it’s all plagiarism. Keep on keeping on DrunkCat🫡
@DVDBZN@haydesigner yes, I’ve been in departments that have been trimmed because “we can have paid for chatGPT and will use them until the enrollment ends”… Granted someone usually has the sense to keep an actual human being around to edit the answers AI gives to verify it tailor them to the situation. Usually.
This seems like a decent option if you need to charge supported devices. Keep in mind these PD chargers are being cleared out cheaply because newer devices want PPS (Programmable Power Supply) chargers that will supply exactly the voltage they ask for, rather than making them select from a menu of available options.
@Alereon I bought these chargers back in January as something to give to my parents. They’re not exactly the best on the basis of their tech specs, but they’re good enough, also useful for people who still have a mix of USB-A and USB-C devices and don’t want to go hunting for the right charger each time, and most importantly they’re cheap.
@Alereon We’ve had a device like that for a couple of years already; it’s a compact monocular telescope/camera that refuses to charge unless connected via C-to-C cable to a PD-conversant charger. We’ve resolved to shop for less picky devices in the future, particularly when they don’t come with a charger in the package.
@Alereon@werehatrack Meh has sold several products that are very picky/limited. They did not come with charger but a USB-A to USB-C cable. The devices had a USB-C input, so, new and modern, right?
They charge fine from an old-style USB-A 5V port. They basically do nothing if using a modern USB-C charger and cable. There have been several products like this. They do work but I think they lack the ability to “ask” the new chargers for a what they want, (for efficiency and safety) so they get nothing.
@Kidsandliz I’ll be contrary; I think having two Irks (the old crusty icon, the childish cartoon) is an acceptable middle ground.
I do miss the banter though (see Woot and their bottom-page talking Monkey heads bantering with each other) and of course the hackjob comedy that comes from awkward Photoshop. But creativity jobs are the first to get cut…
@Kyeh@pakopako@stolicat Well those posts are after the ones in this set of messages. Maybe someone at meh is listening… I guess we will have to wait and see if ugly, angry boy shows up again or irk shows up again.
I want to pick up a pair of these… But I am also fairly certain I have a half dozen similar items around here somewhere that I still haven’t opened / distrubuted into bags/rooms.
I got two of these last time around and they’re great for travel when you might need to charge a phone+watch off one outlet. Some devices fully ignore USB-C PD, so having quickcharging USB-A as well is great.
Did your copy writer quit with no notice? That would explain the nonsensical AI-generated schlock in the description and the weird editor’s note where the name of the product is misspelled. Seriously, if you don’t have the time/resources/whatever to write the usual lengthy copy, just… don’t do it anymore. Replace it with nothing. That is 1000% preferable to AI garbage word salad.
Now I’m starting to wonder when we’ll see tech journals proudly trumpeting the arrival of AI chatbots that are capable of Natural Human Language Output Complete With Genuine Typoes And Mildly Incoherent Grammar.
Maybe there’s an employment opportunity in providing the service of simulating such.
@DrunkCat Maybe because most people can compose acceptable text a lot more easily than they can either draw or photoshop an image, so AI images are regarded as being more generally useful?
@ItalianScallion@troy@werehatrack Anyone can pick up a pencil, only an idiot would think otherwise. “AI” use is unethical regardless if it’s an image slop or written slop. If it can compose more acceptable text, not that it really can, then why not just use it as well? If y’all aren’t already given the sudden pushback. Drawing such an arbitrary line is super curious.
@rocketdyke Good point! I never think to check that. By the way, if people are wondering why so much stuff is ETL approved instead of UL approved, it’s because UL is significantly more expensive, according to an engineer I worked with who did certifications. Both are equally as good.

“AI” users, because why should lead paint hog all the brain damage.
@DrunkCat I do have to ask… what is the point of you posting anti-AI every day?
More importantly, what are you hoping to accomplish here, specifically?
@DrunkCat @haydesigner I’ve begun to wonder if it’s a case of projection, though I can’t for the life of me figure out why Meh gets targeted so forcefully. I’m slightly curious if this “love” gets shared around to other websites or communities.
@DrunkCat This has to be a boomer making this post because only a boomer would be this slavishly angry about AI being used in an innocuous way.
@DrunkCat @haydesigner seems obvious? it’s just a protest against meh probably now or in the future using AI to lay someone off or pay them less. Someone who was a creative talent and part of the charm that makes meh a little unique and better than places like woot.

@haydesigner Practice mostly.
@AaronLeeJohnson It’s just a little bit of coal-fired plagiarism eroding humanities. Just a minor thing really.
@haydesigner @xobzoo If you’re not in a community that actively shits on “AI” slop then you’re in a bargain basement cesspool of shit community.
@haydesigner, cats do what they want. Drunk cats do what nobody wants.
Not unhinged. Nope. Not at all.
@haydesigner If that’s unhinged you must think mayo is a hot sauce.
@bobthenormal @DrunkCat @haydesigner

I mean… have they actually done that?
@DVDBZN @haydesigner
Yeah. That’s the part that would legitimize the daily rant (though “AI” is really a broad brush to print with… There are myriad practical and beneficial uses)
@AaronLeeJohnson @DrunkCat
I like that
@DrunkCat @haydesigner I just took them at their word that these are the rantings of a Drunk Cat.

Cats be crazy, man.

@Alereon This is about the price of standard 2a chargers. Just the addition a C port makes it worth it.

Legacy chargers at a fairly cheap price that should last a while. What could go wrong with that
Sad to see the dorky new irk cartoon character again. The old irk was way better and more in line with Glen as well.
@Kidsandliz Same here!
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh much prefer the old pasted up photoshops - at least they were funny. These aren’t, possibly because of the cheap cartooning
@Kyeh @stolicat I agree! These, so far, just look like an angry cartoon boy vaguely looking like irk.
@Kidsandliz @stolicat @pakopako Irk himself dislikes it!
“New” Irk looks Disney-fied to me.
@Kyeh @pakopako @stolicat Well those posts are after the ones in this set of messages. Maybe someone at meh is listening… I guess we will have to wait and see if ugly, angry boy shows up again or irk shows up again.
New Irk is about as cool as New Coke.
@Kyeh Can’t even match the toes lol.

I want to pick up a pair of these… But I am also fairly certain I have a half dozen similar items around here somewhere that I still haven’t opened / distrubuted into bags/rooms.
/showme wall chargers hidden around a room
/showme wall chargers hidden around a room
@ArmchairGamer Buy them and hide them behind the other chargers. Assuming you can find the others.
I got two of these last time around and they’re great for travel when you might need to charge a phone+watch off one outlet. Some devices fully ignore USB-C PD, so having quickcharging USB-A as well is great.

@jermbly the writeup is not AI.
@jermbly @troy blimey, meh has become Proper English wot wot.
@troy Is it my imagination, or are these protestations starting to sound so formulaic as to have been generated by some kind of a bot?
Now I’m starting to wonder when we’ll see tech journals proudly trumpeting the arrival of AI chatbots that are capable of Natural Human Language Output Complete With Genuine Typoes And Mildly Incoherent Grammar.
Maybe there’s an employment opportunity in providing the service of simulating such.
@troy @werehatrack Very amused that “AI” image slop is okay but “AI” written slop is not. I wonder why?
@DrunkCat Maybe because most people can compose acceptable text a lot more easily than they can either draw or photoshop an image, so AI images are regarded as being more generally useful?
@DrunkCat @troy @werehatrack Maybe because pretty much everybody can write, but not many of us are capable of drawing even halfway decently.
@ItalianScallion @troy @werehatrack Anyone can pick up a pencil, only an idiot would think otherwise. “AI” use is unethical regardless if it’s an image slop or written slop. If it can compose more acceptable text, not that it really can, then why not just use it as well? If y’all aren’t already given the sudden pushback. Drawing such an arbitrary line is super curious.
. . . it is a bit of a stretch calling that Georgia Red.
no UL/ETL, no purchase for me. I don’t like chargers burning my house down
@rocketdyke Good point! I never think to check that. By the way, if people are wondering why so much stuff is ETL approved instead of UL approved, it’s because UL is significantly more expensive, according to an engineer I worked with who did certifications. Both are equally as good.
Idk where I lost it
