@heartny Fun fact! All this time I’ve been reading your nick as “heartney” not making the connection as NY until I saw the heart in your post just now!
@therealjrn Yes, the name comes from the INY ad campaign that I worked on back in the days when I was in advertising. I named my Korat cat iHeartNY because the breed has a heart shaped face.
@heartny Wow, you never know what’s going to turn up in the meh forums! That’s really cool and a memorable ad!
/image Korat cat The Korat cat is a short-haired breed known for its striking silver-tipped blue coat and heart-shaped head. Originating from Thailand, they are intelligent, playful, and form strong bonds with their owners, often referred to as “good luck cats” in their native culture.
@heartny@therealjrn I knew that about your user name because you mentioned that a while back when I posted something about Milton Glaser, but I still hear it in my mind as “heartney.” It’s funny with user names - I also always read @jrwofuga as “Jr. Wofuga.” And @blaineg as “blain egg.”
@ircon96@llangley
Be careful what you wish for
. Sounds like these new neighbors are well armed and willing to demonstrate that fact!
One of my neighbors up the road must have gotten a new rifle for christmas. I’ve heard dozens of shots fired behind their house over the last few days. Some of them sound pretty quick, so I’m thinking at the very least semi-automatic.
@chienfou@ircon96@llangley Ugh. I just read a story a few days ago about a woman who died because someone blocks away was doing target practice in his backyard and a stray bullet traveled that far & struck her.
@chienfou@Kyeh@llangley Yeah, we have more than our share of target-shooting morons around here, but they mostly stay well off in the distance in the woods behind my house. Every once in awhile, though, there will be a nearby, earth-shaking explosion that startles the hell out of me. I was relieved to find out that there’s a guy in the area that fires off his cannon for shits & giggles. I’m assuming sans cannonballs, but you never know in my (red)neck of the woods!
@chienfou@ircon96@llangley Crazy! I just have the park three blocks away where people love to set off fireworks. At least, I assume that’s the cause of the bangs I often hear around midnight …
@ircon96@Kyeh@llangley
I remember living in a house outside Montgomery years ago. We were inside and thought it had started raining just as we were hearing shotgun blasts. Turned out to be somebody shooting doves and the missed shot was landing on our roof.
D’oh!
@Kyeh@phendrick
When I was a teenager, I had a mean cat that would shred you if you touched her belly (or legs or tail nub). @mycya4me cat sounds much nicer.
@kittykat9180@Kyeh@phendrick FYI Thor the Cat! there is NO Where I can’t scratch or rub. Even the paw pads! From Nose to Ears, OMG you should see him (It as he has been fixed)
@Kyeh@macromeh@mycya4me@phendrick
Cats are funny with their personalities.
I have a friend whose cat is very tolerant of his antics. I always laugh and say my last cat would’ve tore me a new butthole if I did that to her.
TL;DR: Hopefully 2026 will be a continuation of how 2025 ended.
Now for the long-winded version doubling as a PSA for puzzle lovers: So far it’s been uneventful, just a quiet evening at home, but before midnight was pretty sweet. I’ve been playing a riddle game that Netflix recently launched called “Best Guess Live” that streams via an app every weeknight at 8pm. They play 2 rounds with 2 different answers & give 5 cryptic clues each round, only the last of which most average people have a decent chance of interpreting (usually including me, unfortunately), where you have to guess the correct predetermined “item,” which could be literally anything: Goodyear blimp, Will Ferrell, bowling, Buzz Lightyear, speed bump, Barbie, just random stuff. The usual prizes are $5000 for the first round & $10,000 for the second, but in honor of the ”Stranger Things" NYE finale, it was $11,111 & $111,111, respectively.
The person who guesses the correct answer on the earliest clue (within 20 seconds with no typos, so no time to think or consult ChatGPT), wins the whole amount, or splits it evenly with all correct guessers. I guessed the second round’s answer on the first clue, so it was pretty exciting for a minute there; unfortunately, 1342 other players did the same, but we still ended up with $82.73 each. Not bad for a few mins of “work,” consisting of watching an amusing host bantering between clues & typing as quickly & accurately as humanly possible. And, the more you play, the more you learn how these weirdos think. It’s surprisingly fun for such a maddening game!
@Kyeh@unksol Yeah, i expect to be dead well before the world goes arse over teakettle, but in the meantime, the bill collectors don’t accept that excuse, so every little bit helps!
@Fuzzalini Rain?? Luck-eeee! I’d give anything for it to be warm enough for rain at this point. The one time recently when we got rain, it froze on contact, so that was fun. And it hasn’t gotten that “warm” since… I wonder if it’s too late to go into hibernation mode?
@Fuzzalini@ircon96 I think it was 50 degrees on Christmas. Got a bunch of rain before. The kids were throwing footballs. It was low teens before and is back again.
Freezing rain is pretty much the worst though. Just breaks things
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@unksol Kind of the opposite of both of those here - warm & much too dry. I would love for us to have rain, but snow would actually be better, so the trees & bushes don’t start budding out early (and then get frozen later.) Our fire danger is high - that’s almost become the norm anymore.
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@Kyeh mmm yes. I forgot about that. Really messes with the plants and especially trees if the seasons get off. Things try to sprout then get frozen. We just had the one peak/short enough we are probably fine in the Midwest.
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@Kyeh
Tree stuff if you are a nerd. Purdue, my Alma matre still puts out good stuff as do most state universities. The extension offices always have some good stuff
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@unksol That’s really interesting, thanks! They did tell us here on the news to keep watering our trees during this dry spell. I hope that the cold temps at night keep them from budding.
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@Kyeh it was semi relevant the first or second year I lived here because like maple syrup you can do the same with black wallnut trees. Must have been a different document cause that was ~2015. I tapped 10 trees but didn’t get much. Took forever to boil it down and ended up with three pint canning jars in the back of the cabinet I still haven’t opened cause it’s either good/special so save. Or it’s just gonna be bad.
Haven’t tried again although I meant to. The timing is hard and we haven’t had a really hard winter since. This one is doing better than average for the Midwest but also weird
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@Kyeh@unksol Interesting. We have a big black walnut tree in the yard. It’s annoying that it drops lots of messy nuts every year, but they wreak havoc on the grass and aren’t really edible (well, I guess the squirrels - AKA tree rats - like them). (We also planted a couple of English walnut trees, preferred for their nuts, but they aren’t producing yet.)
And I have enough trees I could get a good amount. I doubt it’s worth it with one tree. And there are better ways to shell them than running over them with a car. But they are definitely edible. Just a lot of work.
Their roots also are toxic to some plants so. Yea.
Another extension article. The state universities really put out some good stuff when you want to site something reliable
@Fuzzalini@ircon96@Kyeh@macromeh
Last one I think I saw on processing black walnuts. I haven’t tried it and wasn’t looking for it. Just kinda showed up in recommendations a few months ago. And I have a bunch so I watched it. Seems reasonable. If you want to put in the effort.
@IWUJackson@kittykat9180 a reminder for me to “mask up” again if I go to any big crowded stores. And I’ve been avoiding those mostly. If I go to local small “Grocery Outlet” it’s usually early morning and pretty quiet so I have been forgetting.
There just is no public transport here. Or tight clusters of people. But Id agree with a mask on a plane. They are pretty dry and heavily filtered just by the nature of the pressurization system. But doesn’t do a lot of good if you’re sat next to someone who decided to fly sick/has no social contract.
Obviously if you don’t have Netflix… IDK. I don’t run multiple streaming services. Burned a regularly repeating amazon prime trial. To get some stuff shipped. Watching anything good there for now.
15 streaming services is almost as bad as cable. But them combining is probably worse
@chienfou@pmarin@unksol I don’t have Netflix because awhile ago I had reached the end of shows I was interested in on it. Does Netflix ever even offer special rates? I think I read somewhere they never do.
@chienfou@pmarin@therealjrn I don’t think so. I’ve never seen one. Netflix is kinda the bedrock of streaming but I’ve been finding less to watch on it. I haven’t cancelled them yet. Had to watch stranger things. But they are getting close…
The most efficient thing to do would be to only subscribe to one at a time and rotate when full seasons are complete which is a pain in the arse.
At the moment using Netflix and adding others when there is a sale/trial.
It’s piecemeal but it’s cheaper than cable so… Eh…
I wanted to watch the expanse/heard good stuff about it. But I just waited and watched the whole thing on prime after the finale. Using one of the constant amazon prime trials. Same with the boys. Etc.
I’ve never paid for prime. I burn a trial offer when I need something quick or discounted. Watch some shows. Cancel. They will offer a new one in a few months.
@chienfou@pmarin@therealjrn i also get Paramount+ offers on my credit cards and some other’s. That’s basically 100% cash back so a trial. Keep meaning to watch some star Trek
@therealjrn@zhicks1987
Did a pot luck luck with friends today.
Black eyed peas (coins)
Cornbread (gold)
Turkey (some are ham averse… But ham is prosperity)
Collards (money)
Good time for all invited.
TBH I pressed my luck by doing laundry today though.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cold. January is average, I guess, for being cold up here in New England. My “garden” style apartment (part below grade and part above grade) in this old uninsulated house ranges between cool and cold and I’m paying through the nose for the gas the furnace is using to struggle to keep the temperature around 70 degrees. I guess I should have posted this in the January Goat thread and blamed him!
@chienfou@ItalianScallion I feel your pain (both thermal & financial )! It has been SO COLD for so long around here that the coming 40°+ days are going to feel downright tropical!
@ItalianScallion definitely feel your pain in my office right now. Those 10ft windows give you an ace view but it’s freezing right now. Reminds me of why I had to layer so throughly in the murder shed and this has way more insulation. We’re currently running a space heater and im terrified to see the electric bill next month. It’s incentive to hook up the HVAC.
Not too shabby so far! I’ve read three books and finished the office side of the shop. I also dismantled Christmas today though I need to get art put back up so I can get more shop finished. Happy New Year yall!
@sillyheathen So amazing!!!
And it happened so fast! Although it might not have felt that way to you. The colors are scrumptious. I love the red fridge.
@Kyeh@sillyheathen
I particularly like the window muntins. We have something vaguely similar at our house. Had our neighbor make stained glass panels to put across the tops of the windows. Really brightens up the space.
@chienfou@Kyeh we got those windows for a steal. I think we paid $100/ea. A guy bought a ton of them for a small apartment building he owned. He then sold the building and just had a bunch of these taking up space in a warehouse in Portland. I love the idea of making the stained glass muntins! I’m going to be getting back to more glass work when everything is set up as I’m going to be incorporating it into furniture. Maybe I’ll have to find time to make some for these. It would most definitely be in keeping with the space.
@Kyeh@sillyheathen
these are technically just panels that I siliconed into the top of the window space. Had each made to spec so they would be tight(ish) in the frames then put a bead of silicone down the front edges to make them stay in place… for the past 10 years!
Panels were the wife’s idea, she left it to me to install them!
@chienfou@Kyeh we put in a fence the lines the property at the road. It’s made of hog panel and pressure treated cedar. I plan on making fancy caps for the posts and I’ve always wanted to put random glass panels dotted along to catch the light during the day. It will probably be a while before that comes to fruition but I just love colored glass when the light beams through.
@chienfou@Kyeh
I also managed to convince my cousin to let me bring this bad boy home. I need to do some work to restore it. It was left out in a dry shed in the barn. Thankfully he let me take it because it would’ve just turned into a pile of rust. I’m definitely going to leave some of the patina on it though. It’s the last sign from our family farm that I know of. I just need to figure out where in the shop it will be best served.
@chienfou@Kyeh@sillyheathen I’m sure you’ve seen the show American Pickers. It used to bother me that they wouldn’t restore stuff to “brand new” appearance.
But I came around, I like when old things look a little rough. It’s honest.
Wrong time zone, hasn’t happened yet
Give it an hour and I might let you know.
@kjady welp 2026 is 2026. Don’t really know what everyone else was expecting. Very meh thus far but that’s because I’m at work.
I’ve still got two episodes of Twilight Zone before it’s midnight.
@zhicks1987 Yeah, it’s fine.
Sounds like a real blast outside the office windows. I should have opened the blinds.
Still dumping snow, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to break out the shovel in the morning.
One minute in and it’s going great!

Happy 2026!

Wow that’s a LOT of clicks! 10000
Congratulations!
@heartny Woohoo! That’s really pretty!
Congratulations!

@Lynnerizer @Kyeh Thank you!
@heartny, that should earn you like a $100 gift certificate lol
@heartny How did you amass 27+ years’ worth of clicks in less than 12 years, pray tell?
@heartny @werehatrack Probably clicked EVERY ITEM in the mehrathons.
@heartny

@heartny @MrGoodGuy @werehatrack
/giphy serious dedication

@werehatrack Many sleepless nights during Mehrathons clicking as many products as I could.
@heartny way to start the year on a high note.
But how do you top that achievement? Hopefully it’s not downhill from here.
@heartny Ugh. I wonder if I can get a nice, sympathetic volmod to fix my typo from “New Near” to “New Year”? And I wasn’t even drinking when I wrote it!
@heartny
Paging @narfcake & @Ignorant … ?
@heartny @Ignorant @Kyeh @narfcake
HOLD ON!! I kinda like “New Near”
@therealjrn Maybe next near
@heartny Fingers crossed!
@heartny Thank you to whoever fixed my typo

It (unusually) sounds like a war zone out there. Guess we have some new neighbors
@llangley I wish it had been mine that moved away, but no such luck – they’re still here! <sigh>
@ircon96 @llangley
@chienfou @ircon96 @llangley Ugh. I just read a story a few days ago about a woman who died because someone blocks away was doing target practice in his backyard and a stray bullet traveled that far & struck her.
@chienfou @Kyeh @llangley Yeah, we have more than our share of target-shooting morons around here, but they mostly stay well off in the distance in the woods behind my house.

@zhicks1987 correct
The first half hour has been fine, but give it time.
(The first half hour of 2025 was pretty innocuous also, but then…)
Productive… spent the evening working on a sewing project i had been procrastinating.
Just excellent The cats and I are resting quietly listening to the myriad of automatic gunfire exploding across the metropolis.

Meh
I think a bunch of people I love are doing to die this year.
@Salanth Wow, i hope you’re wrong. Is this just a dark premonition, or are there plans involved?

Actually, now that you mention it, i can picture some sociopaths-in-training using Barbie as a speed bump for their Barbie Dream Car!

Turned the page between the Old and New Year finishing up a binge watch string of Department Q. I’ve got to say I really enjoyed that show.
@chienfou I think I one shot it months ago but I concur. I’m hoping for a new season

@chienfou @pmarin @therealjrn i also get Paramount+ offers on my credit cards and some other’s. That’s basically 100% cash back so a trial. Keep meaning to watch some star Trek
@pmarin @therea subs,ljrn @unksol
Paramount + is free is you have Walmart plus.
Netflix (with ads) is free thru TMO (or 7.99 credit towards your subs.)
@chienfou @pmarin @therealjrn @unksol
What is TMO, chef?
I do have Walmart+, and it’s surprisingly useful.
@pmarin @therealjrn @unksol
T Mobile
Yes W+ is handy. Got it free from AmEx for a year IIRC.
Dog died new years eve
@Narn Oh no.
I’m so sorry. My cat died 3 weeks ago so I can relate. I just hope this year brings better things for you.
@Narn that’s a terrible way to end a year.
I’m sorry. Pets are family.
@kittykat9180 @Narn well shit. Sorry I don’t hug people normally. But if I could… Etc
@Narn so sorry…

It’s time to eat some black-eyed peas.
@zhicks1987 My bank always gives out cans of them every year.
/youtube black eyed peas
@therealjrn @zhicks1987
Did a pot luck luck with friends today.
Black eyed peas (coins)
Cornbread (gold)
Turkey (some are ham averse… But ham is prosperity)
Collards (money)
Good time for all invited.
TBH I pressed my luck by doing laundry today though.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chienfou @therealjrn @zhicks1987 around here, cabbage is (my preferred) alternative to collards for the money. Though IME, all the above are suspect.
My partner is from Kentucky and makes a black-eyed pea dish with cornbread every new year’s. It is so good!
@UpbeatDuck yum!
@ItalianScallion
It’s not too late!
@chienfou @ItalianScallion I feel your pain (both thermal
& financial

@sillyheathen Yowza! Lookin’ pretty spiffy there! Happy New Year!
@sillyheathen So amazing!!!
And it happened so fast! Although it might not have felt that way to you. The colors are scrumptious. I love the red fridge.
@Kyeh @sillyheathen
Yeah it looks awe-some!
The mini split is wonderful at cooling, but not so handy at heating if the temp gets too low.
@Kyeh @sillyheathen
I particularly like the window muntins. We have something vaguely similar at our house. Had our neighbor make stained glass panels to put across the tops of the windows. Really brightens up the space.
@chienfou @sillyheathen Muntins, I’ve never heard of them. Those stained glass ones are gorgeous! What a neat detail.
@chienfou @Kyeh we got those windows for a steal.
@Kyeh @sillyheathen
these are technically just panels that I siliconed into the top of the window space. Had each made to spec so they would be tight(ish) in the frames then put a bead of silicone down the front edges to make them stay in place… for the past 10 years!
Panels were the wife’s idea, she left it to me to install them!
@chienfou @Kyeh we put in a fence the lines the property at the road. It’s made of hog panel and pressure treated cedar. I plan on making fancy caps for the posts and I’ve always wanted to put random glass panels dotted along to catch the light during the day. It will probably be a while before that comes to fruition but I just love colored glass when the light beams through.
@chienfou @Kyeh
@chienfou @sillyheathen That all sounds great! Very nice that you were able to rescue that sign.
@chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen I’m sure you’ve seen the show American Pickers. It used to bother me that they wouldn’t restore stuff to “brand new” appearance.
But I came around, I like when old things look a little rough. It’s honest.
@chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn
I’ve always preferred “rugged”.
